same reason that any food stuff becomes expensive after all the fitness fads target it.
People will pay for anything that they think will make getting fit easier.

Protein powder isn't a necessity, you can get enough protein in your diet normally.
All you're doing is paying elevated prices for a cheese by product that is worth fuck all.

Creatine is just as good, if not better, if you buy the cheapest brand you can, rather than fancy label shit.

Well you fucked up by shopping at gnc... Literally any where else is cheaper, shit even Popeyes is usually cheaper.

Costco is pretty GOAT for protein other then that your better off purchasing online, also stick to creative monohydrate. It's the cheapest and only proven form to work, everything else is marketing

Protein powder is helpful for people who have a low appetite and can't eat a ton. I used it when I was bulking on Ritalin (which suppresses appetite) cuz otherwise I had a hard time eating enough protein+calories
