I've hated squats ever since I first failed a rep and had to dump it. Now every time I do them all I can picture is not being able to get back up. It often results in me not going for another rep if I'm not absolutely 100% sure I could get it back up.

I hate squats thanks to my shit mobility. Even with an hour of stretching and rolling and whatnot, my body still doesn't want to be folded up like that.

They are absolutely fun. If they're not comfortable, your are probably lacking mobility. Stretch and stretch and stretch. Practice lightweight pause squats where you sit in the hole for awhile. If you get your ass down to your heels, you're not flexible enough. Even then extra stretching is a good idea.

Here's my warm up

Move every single join CCW and CW 5-10 times
Shoulder warm up: YTWK 3-5 sets
Ab warm up: Rotation, forward and sideways
Hip warm up: Leg swings mostly
Hamstring, hip and calves stretches 30 seconds (1 or 2 times)
Assume squatting position, stay in it for like 1 minute, maximum deepth
Overhead squats with a random stick (or barbell) 2-3 sets
Then I start squatting the bar, adding 20 kg each time till I hit my weight.

Doesn't matter other than energy levels.
Get a caloric surplus of 200-300 calories above your TDEE. Aim for a gain of a half lb a week or 2lbs a month as this is effectively the maximum rate your body can put on muscle as a natty. You need .82g of protein per lb of lean body mass on a cut and .68 on a bulk. Track calories and protein. Carbs if you're carb cycling.

It's probably because I'm a noob lifter, but squats aren't fun for me because they scare me. I squat in a rack, so the safety bars would let me get out if i couldn't get it back up, but i guess there's something about weight on your shoulders that just creates a primal fear of "fuck this up, and you'll fuck yourself up".

Curiously, bench pressing doesn't scare me, and I'm sure you can fuck yourself up just as bad with a bad bench.

Deadlifts are super fun when you're DYEL but when you've been lifting a few years you stop progressing much and they become frustrating.

Bench is 2nd best but is always incredibly inconsistent for me, when I finally got to 2pl8 3×5, next workout could only do 2x3.

For the longest time I was shit scared of deadlifting because my mate told me a horror story of how he was doing 3 and 1/2 plate, out of fucking nowhere a barbell flies towards him and knocks his bar so he staggers and falls. In that moment he described what literally felt like his final moment as he watched the weights bounce next to his head. He got out okay, only 1 slipped disk but he doesn't dare do deadlifts because his back is fucked.
