RUNNING /FIT/

What is actually a good time to achieve for 5 miles? (~8km). (male, 18 years, 6'4/ 1,94m bf 16-17%)

Also general running/ jogging etc thread
>>
Depends on how competitive and if you have a benis. As a former xc runner I'd say a little over 30 mins would be great but five mile is such a weird distance I've never seen any times to compare it to.
Also ordered a new pair of brooks today feels good mang
>>
>>35464596
idk, I'm slow as fuck and did 5.7 miles in an hour last week
I usually do 3 miles and go slow but a bit faster than that

>tfw base building after not running for like 3 years
>>
5 mile is a pretty non standard distance to practice, so there's not a lot of data for you to compare to.

Consider running 3 miles/6 miles and you'll have a much easier time gauging yourself.
>>
How do I get into running guys? Is C25K the best, thinking of doing it after my broken foot heals and combining it with my lifting.
>>
OP here. Im a recovering fattie that lost almost 30 pounds in 9 months but only used the crossfit trainer so far . Jogged outside for the first time so far and took around 40 mins for 5 miles, not sure if thats good, average or trash tier
>>
>>35464727
8 minute pace not bad but definitely room for improvement. Good job tho everyone gotta start somewhere.
>>
>>35464727

not crossfit obviously but this think which is a bit like a treadmill idk

>inb4 "reddit"

even though it's reddit you'll find better information in the sidebar and discussion there than you will on /fit/ which is heavily geared towards lifting, diet, and memes
>>
Real talk here, I was a marathon runner before an injured knee. I don't know the first fucking thing about lifting, but I'm pretty good at diet and running. A fast 8km is 30 mins. That's a good speed. Keep in mind that's completely irrelevant, it's based on your body type. You have to choose. I was a long distance, meaning, I can run a 42km race quite 'fast', but I lose out to a 5km runner who can run 5km in 20 minutes.
>>
>>35464596
I always considered 6 minute miles to be a good time to strive for when youre going over 3 miles

also fuck you for making a running thread. shin splints have left me crippled for the last few months and im gunna be fat as fatass until I start again in the spring
>>
>>35464856
Mah nigga how many marathons have you done? PR? Haven't ran one in a while but got a half in a month I'm not looking forward to
>>
Running bros get in here
>>
I used to run XC and want to get back into it. Now everytime I go about 1/4 mile my left calf tightens up. I can stretch it during the run but it feels really funny. How can I stop this?

What is a good weekly mileage to jump into if I have run 35 miles a week in the past (several years ago) but haven't run seriously in the last 2 years?
C 2 5k seems a little slow of a start for me but I don't want to rush things and get injured.

I live in a wintry climate, how worried should I be about slipping on ice and hurting myself?
>>
>>35465069
Stretch a little before and probably due some dynamic warm ups/stretches. Check running form could be a knee issue
>>
>>35465108
Start back up with 2-4 mile runs with a rest day between each for the first week then start getting back to about 25 miles a week and increase ten miles a week until desired mileage.
Slipping on ice is no joke, but it's pretty rare id say. Take care but don't let it keep you from getting in shape again friend

not 10km

Just ran today 7 miles/60 min. Sucks running now outside especially since lazy fucks don't shovel their sidewalk.

I would join a gym that has a track but I hate running in circles. I need to be outside.

This was before christmas, I was running faster than what I'm used to, normally my pace oscillates around 6:30 minutes pero kilometer
>>
>>35464710
No, C25K isn't the best. The progression scheme isn't really that great. It's a lot like some basement dwelling nerd with no education or training on the matter tried it out and then started writing all over reddit about it.

Does it work? Yes. It is definitely not the worst thing you could do.

Is it the best? No. There's a reason why it doesn't look like any other program ever made at any point in time.

But 5K in 30 minutes is not a competitive time, so really you could do whatever the fuck you want as long as you push yourself a little more each time and you'll eventually make it.

>>35464596
Did my best time for my 7.5km tempo in the last 3 years the other day. 25:50. Good feels guys
>>
>>35466312
Congratulations!! Good job dude
>>
>>35466524
Cheers man. I ran all my best times about then as well but I'm getting back towards them now

very hilly place too
>>
So I was out of shape.

I was in awful shape but then I started lifting so at least I have muscle now .

I want to get into cardio but I feel like the work isn't worth the reward. Runners seem to believe it feels nice but I'm more or less convinced it's delusion

Is this justified?

Does it make you feel better or is it a "I'm gonna live longer" thing?
>>
>>35464596
I can't even run 1.5 miles without stopping. Pretty lmao. My shins are fucked
>>
>>35467015

Back in the day i really felt something different after running than after finishing my bulk workout so i guess it's not just a myth

Maybe that's personal, maybe it's simply what you think about it
>>
Is running on a treadmill easier on your shins? Like I just said, my shins are fucked
>>
>>35467336
Get shoes properly fitted and get a sports massage on your calves
>>
>>35464596
if you can do <8min/mile, then you're in top 15-20% of runners.
>>
What do to when running if you have knock knees/flat feet?
>>
Anyone have recommendations for good earbuds that wont rip off your head while you run? Preferably not those over the head ones since that retains sweat

I have those. They're perfect.
>>
>>35468103
Hows the sound quality?
>>
>>35468125

Not incredible but acceptable. I use them 1 hour, 2-3 times a week so I don't need something too advanced. It only cost like 30 euros so it's up to you if you want to spend more.

Also I ended 2015 with a PR. 10 K in 45 min. Now on to the sub 40.
>>
>>35464596
Racing an olympic medalist 3 times in the next fortnight. Literally fucked
>>
>>35466915
Takes a while to get to the point where you actually enjoy running but a runners high beats a pump every single day of the week
>>
How would you chaps recommend getting your 3 mile time down? I'm aiming for 21 minutes but my best so far is 27:13. I just can't seem to maintain a sub 8 minute pace for any time over about a mile.

Should I just keep pushing it more or are there any techniques I could use to get faster results?
>>
>>35466851
not bad 4:30 min/km is a good pace

under 6 min/kmh is better than most people
