Hey /fit/.

I'm a 19 year average flabby kid. 5'10. Is it possible for me to become a pro boxer?

I've never been to any kind of gym training in my life however. Is it still possible for me to follow Ali's legacy to become the GOAT?
>>
>>35421819
Real talk nigga.
The chances are slim.Do you know how many people wanna be pro basketballers or skateboarders almost everyone did.If you really want to and realize how hard this is,You'll have to eat, shit and breathe boxing. Then I think you can. This will be the hardest thing you will ever do in your life faggot.

I know man :(

I want to be great. But I have no idea if it's still possible for me to become so. I feel like I should have started earlier and shit is eating me up senpai.

Are there any examples of boxers who became legendary pros this late in the game?
>>
Ali was an idiot - champions are made in the gym. To become GOAT at anything it takes 5~8 hours in the gym daily. No booze, no women, healthy eating, training through injuries, etc. If that thought even scares you, then no, you cannot be GOAT. But never let your age hold you back - I just started boxing recently and I'm 36. It's breddy awesome senpai.

> no booze
My family is full of alcoholics senpai. I hate drinking.
> no women
What's wrong with having a gf?
> healthy eating
I have and can definitely manage this. It's hard but the only thing you need is self control.

> training through injuries
Of course.

> I just started boxing recently and I'm 36
Good job man! Do you find it hard? What do you do in the gym?

I started freshman year at uni, just for fun and beat kids that had been training since they were in diapers after 6 months.
It's never too late

>What's wrong with having a gf?
Actually, nothing, but just keep in mind that sex makes the legs weak.

>Good job man! Do you find it hard? What do you do in the gym?
Typical day is like this, although I'm not at the sparring level yet.
http://www.expertboxing.com/boxing-basics/how-to-box/basic-boxing-training-routine

It's literally the best decision I've made. I have so much more confidence, and starting at 36 (or whatever age) is better than not starting at all. I was really worried I'd make an ass out of myself or that the people would be roided up trash talkers, but the people in most gyms are super friendly and happy to help. It's as hard as you want it to be - you're really allowed to go at your own pace in my gym. FYI - I lost about 30 lbs (14kg) just taking up boxing.

Just some advice - learn to 'snap' your punches and work on footwork and rhythm.
>>
>>35422115
> but just keep in mind that sex makes the legs weak.
I heard it's better if you have a lot of sex. Ronda Rousey said something about it or some shit like that.

Not that I think you're lying but- Source?

Thanks for the website. I bookmarked it man :)

How long have you been training btw? 14 kg is a lot.

Do you have any advice for cardio? Mines is pretty bad but I don't what to apart from "just keep running XD".
>>
>>35422176
>Do you have any advice for cardio?

Not him but you should start boxing training asap to build conditioning
>>
>>35422176

>I heard it's better if you have a lot of sex
Again, same source:
http://www.expertboxing.com/boxing-basics/boxing-tips/the-real-reason-why-no-sex-before-a-fight

Speaking from personal experience (I'm engaged), I feel really tired in the gym if I had sex the day earlier.

>How long have you been training btw? 14 kg is a lot.

Since March of this year.

> Do you have any advice for cardio? Mines is pretty bad but I don't what to apart from "just keep running XD".

Yeah, actually. You'd be better off if you can at least do the following, but don't let it stop you from going to a boxing gym:

> be able to jog/walk at least 5K
> skip rope at least 1 min non-stop
> be able to do 1 min of body weight squats

This was also really helpful in building stamina for my arms (I used 0.5kg weights):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cLPpgmG_PE

Eventually you want to be able to jog 5K non-stop and skip rope for 15 minutes with varying technique. Once you learn to snap your punches, you won't get so tired on the heavy bag, but as a beginner, you will push your punches and get tired really fast.

A couple other things that may help.

Youtube channels are a good place to start, some good ones are:
Expert boxing
Fight tips
Nate Bower fitness

An old, but very respected book which is now free because of copyright laws:
(google this): jack dempsey championship fighting pdf

Lastly, as far as gear goes, you don't need much for boxing. Basically, 180cm hand wraps, a jumprope and gloves. I personally like the Fairtex BGL6 ($80 USD shipped if you order online). I have Winning gloves, but the Fairtex are better, for the price. 16oz sparring, something lighter (usually 12 oz) on the bags. I just use my 16oz on the bags - they protect but they are heavy.

>>35422332
Saved. Thanks a lot man. I appreciate it.

Is sparring brutal btw? How many hours arr you capable of training/do you train? Are your hands stiff or something the next day?
>>
>>35421848
>Do you know how many people wanna be pro basketballers or skateboarders almost everyone did.
Yeah but most of those were retarded with no work ethic. Most of the time this desire comes from "you must let me win the sports because mummy says I'm a special boy" too, like you often get their busy body parents asking why their sack of shit wasn't first in line for whatever.

Boxing's more difficult tho imo. I can piss about with a basketball on my own and get/stay at a decent level with minimal contact with other people, boxing needs regular time with others. It's also easier to get someone over for bball than for boxing.

People have gone pro from older than 19 too, he's not past it. But you're right, he shouldn't count on becoming pro. I think the main thing people with an aptitude for boxing find is after a while it becomes less clear what skills to progress. You get a lot of people trying to do the Ali dance or other similar shit.
>>
>>35422353
My gym doesn't do sparring until you've worked up to a good enough level. It's the only way to get good, but it's the one that I have the least knowledge about.

I train about 1.5 hours in the gym and just do cardio (jogging, skipping rope) outside the gym. When you first begin, you're really limited by either your stamina or the pain in your hand.

The first time I went to the gym, I could not move my fingers the next day they hurt so bad. It's because I was punching with bad form. You kind of need to angle your wrist so that the first digit/knuckles hit flush (just rest your clenched fist against a wall and that's basically the form). I was using Winning gloves, so I know it was not the gloves. Now, with better form, my fingers don't hurt at all with 16 oz gloves. Again, pushing punches will also kill your hands and once you learn to snap your punches, your hands will not hurt as much.

Oh yeah, also core/ab workouts are a good way to train as most of the power in boxing comes from your legs and your core.
>>
>>35422353
Sorry, one more. Although I don't have much experience with sparring, generally, if you make it know that you want to do "developmental sparring" and know how to hold back your power, people will not be teeing off on your head. The point of sparring is really to get better and not to get injured. The reason that they don't let beginners spar, is not because they will get messed up, it's because they don't know how to hold their punches and can injure the other person.

Are there any kind of boxing gloves that are universally understood to be bad in quality?
>>35422430
Do people have actual practise matches or is that the same thing as sparring?
>>
>>35422430
I forgot to say- seriously thanks a lot man. This has been REALLY helpful for me. A lot more than other websites tailored to this shit.
>>
>>35422481

>Are there any kind of boxing gloves that are universally understood to be bad in quality?

Yeah, Everlast, Lonsdale, Addidis are all pretty shit. Even their top end stuff is terrible. You honestly don't need your own gloves though, all serious gyms will just have a rack of them so you can try them on and figure out which ones work for you. I bought a pair beforehand, because I didn't know that.

>Do people have actual practise matches or is that the same thing as sparring?

Practice matches are basically the same as sparring - once you get good enough, you will do amateur fights which are like 3 round events, where you do full power, but with headgear. This is what this will look like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdLxwbij3u8

You do mitts as a beginner. So your trainer will hold up mitts for a round and as you are hitting it, they will give you pointers. I've been told it's the second best thing to sparring. Generally you do this until your movement is good enough, which is when you would move up to sparring.

>>35422486

No problem. I've always loved boxing, always wanted to do it. Was always too chicken shit to, but found it to be a really good experience with really good people involved.

Even if you don't become GOAT, you will come to realize that big muscles don't equal punching power and that no matter how big someone is, you don't need to fear them.
>>
>>35421819
You don't have the genetics to be GOAT. You might be able to be a low-mid card pro if you do nothing but box.
>>
>>35422627
Genetics has little to do with boxing. If you have short, stubby arms, you can be a beast inside fighter like Tyson. If you're tall and lanky, you can be a good outside fighter like Tommy Hearns. Fuck, even Ali was literally flat-footed (fallen arches) and he had beautiful foot work.

>You honestly don't need your own gloves though
breh, when you hit something, then your skin has them microfissures
you dont want other ppl bacteria in your microfissures
of course you shouldnt buy gloves during your first week in case you decide you dont like boxing, but you still need your own once you made up your mind
>>
>>35422826

Agreed, community gloves are kind of gross. They are however broken-in. Breaking in gloves fucking sucks.

I think most beginners are really worried about the weight of the glove, so it's better to figure out what weight/style you like before you buy.

But i mean its not too late even for boxing you just have to be talented
Isnt there a current middleweight champion who is like 45 or something

I don't really like MMA desu. I had a thing for it when I was younger but I feel like it's too commercialised now.

Run everyday for ten minutes for a month.
And then run faster

if you want to be a GOAT like ali, its a slim chance. he wasnt just a great boxer, he had character, charisma, and a mouth like no other. with that being said you can be a goat of sorts. mayweather never lost faced the best opposition in his weight class and is the highest paid athlete
