Let's go over some of the /fit/-related careers in the health & wellness field!

Starting with physical therapist, easily the most /fit/-related of all careers.

>What does a physical therapist do?
Physical therapists can teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.

>How do I become a physical therapist?
Physical therapists entering the profession need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, which is typically completed in 4 years of postgraduate school, but can sometimes be completed in as little as 3 years with select summerschooling programs. All states require physical therapists to be licensed.

Believe in yourself, anon. You can do anything you put your mind to.

Let's take a look at another career. Do you love nutrition? Do you get extremely butthurt when fellow /fit/posters brag about "dirty bulking"? Do you rage when you see someone's dinner plate with no vegetables? Then Registered Dietitian Nutritionist might be the career for you!

>What does a registered dietitian nutritionist do?
Dietitians and nutritionists are experts in the use of food and nutrition to promote health and manage disease. They advise people on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal. Dietitians and nutritionists work in many settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and cafeterias; or for state and local governments.

>How do I become a registered dietitian nutritionist?
Most dietitians and nutritionists have a bachelor’s degree in either dietetics or nutritional science, and have completed supervised training through a nationally approved internship. Many states require dietitians and nutritionists to be licensed.

Blood is one of the staples in human biology. I suggest checking out some youtube videos of blood under a microscope. It may pique your interest and turn your fear into a fascination.

Anyway, our next career is a very interesting one in that it hasn't existed as long as other healthcare-related careers. Exercise physiologist (sometimes known as "athletic trainer"). While just about anyone can call themselves a “personal trainer,” an exercise physiologist is a health care professional who has fulfilled a series of education and certification requirements to obtain the title of "exercise physiologist."

>What does an exercise physiologist do?
Exercise physiologists oversee the analysis, improvement, and maintenance of health and fitness; rehabilitation of heart disease and other chronic diseases and disabilities; and the professional guidance and counsel of athletes and others interested in sports training. They are trained to perform a variety of tasks, such as administering exercise stress tests, evaluating the overall health of a patient (with special attention to cardiovascular function and metabolism), and developing individualized exercise prescriptions to increase physical fitness, strength, endurance, and flexibility.

>How do I become an exercise physiologist?
Exercise physiologists require at least a bachelor's degree in exercise physiology, exercise science, or kinesiology. Nearly all states require exercise physiologists to be licensed, which can either be through the American Society of Exercise Physiologists (ASEP) or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Funny you should ask, I am a medical massage therapist! We can go in depth about that one next. Keep in mind there are many different forms of massage available on the market today. Mine is specifically medical, and I work in a physical therapy, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation & weight loss clinic. Medical Massage is result oriented and the treatment is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a physician. We use a variety of modalities or procedures during the treatment, but will focus the medical massage treatment only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis and prescription. Medical massage is generally billed in 15-minute segments using current procedural terminology and adhering to the usual and customary reimbursement fee schedule.

>What does a massage therapist do?
Massage therapists treat clients by using touch to manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. With their touch, therapists relieve pain, help heal injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients.

>How do I become a massage therapist?
Massage therapists typically complete a postsecondary education program of 500 or more hours of study and experience, although standards and requirements vary by state or other jurisdictions. Most states regulate massage therapy and require massage therapists to have a license or certification. I personally got an associate's of applied science in medical massage therapy from a community college, then proceeded to get a state license after I had enough clinical hours.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have about the subject. And no, we don't do "happy endings" : ^ )

>>
I am.

I am currently working in a hospital as a clinical research facilitator, gaining reputation, letters of recommendation, and clinical experience to give myself an edge over my painfully average GPA from undergrad.

Desired specialty is forensic anatomical pathology.

Dream job is Chief Medical Examiner of a highly reputable county. I have no interest in being a hospitalist nor an internist. We'll see how rotations go, by patho seems to be my calling. Orthropaedic surgery pays 10 billion nigga-watt money but I wouldn't be able to bare not seeing my would-be family so often. Most medical examiner's offices operate within normal business hours, if you're the chief of course.

Nursing was a good choice 4-5 years ago when we didn't have enough, but everyone kept saying LOL DO NURSING!!!! and now it's a flooded market
>>
>>35402476

Although this is mostly true, the job openings at the hospital at which I'm employed are like >85% general duty nurses.

My problem with nursing is that, at least from my experience, is that far too many people "fall back" to nursing, and only do so because they've failed at doing something else. This in turn leads to shitty nurses who hate their lives and are just mean because they're mad at their own for not following through with whatever their original plans were.

Same goes for being a correctional officer. Again, in my own experience, I've never once met someone who "grows up wanting to be a CO". Once they've sucked at higher education long enough, or failed to get a job in their field, or at all, they resort to being a prison guard. My anecdote is more than likely because my hometown is residence to the first maximum security prison in the US. >30% of males of adult working age are employed by the prison, and a very slim percentage of them are validated by their job, let alone WANTING to be one before falling into it. By all means not a bad gig if you're into that kind of thing, but it festers of the lack of ambition to be a cop, or a lawyer, or some other legal-related profession that requires at least more than a GED and the ability to take blind orders.

If you don't have a phobia, it's hard to understand or be sympathetic to people that have them.

For me it's not just blood. I almost fainted the last time I got a flu shot. The thought of the needle going into the skin...

In highschool we watched a video of an open heart surgery and I was the only kid who had to leave the class. I held out for a few minutes, but then I turned pale as paper and asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom. I got "seeing stars" vision and almost fainted this time as well.

I wish I could get over this shit...

>>
>>35402915

Look into your area's foremost university affiliated hospital. What kind of research are you interested? As far as I'm aware our biggest area of research is our transplant department. Pathology and Necrospy submit many data to universities regarding epidemiological data of the area as well. I'd start there.

If your interests are more laboratory based, like myco-, micro-, viro-, and the like, you may need to look elsewhere.

This is rarely true if your doctor is a hack who was only in it for the salary, and is just a pharma-shill internist. You'd be hard pressed to find these types of "legalized drug dealers" in other specialties such as various forms of surgery, hospitalists, OB/GYN, or basically anyone else for that matter.

Sure, sometimes you'll have a fat person with a broken bone or whatever, but you don't address their obesity as a medical concern. Refer them to a bariatric specialist and be on your way.

>too many people "fall back" to nursing
that's interesting because my school had a pretty notable nursing program and many of them "fell back" to kinesiology when they discovered nursing was so difficult.

i'm a chem major and looked through their textbooks one time (several nursing major friends) and a lot of it was the exact same stuff i was learning in biochem.

on a side note everyone i know who went to school for nursing is employed.

not sameanon but in my gradschool you had to have a BS in the same major or really similar. almost all schools list their majors on their website (BS, MS, etc.) and what the requirements are to even apply.

not him but I'm a med student myself and can verify. I think what he's talking about is his classmates, there are a ton of rich douchebag sociopaths in med school. The good news is that there's usually about 30% of minorities/other folks who are chill thanks to affirmative action and whatnot, but the lions share of folks who get into med school are still upper crust "high achievers". Lot of sociopaths and autists.

I'd bet that this is minimized if you go to a smaller school in a rural area versus somewhere prestigious in a big city. I regret everyday not picking a "lower" med school over the one I'm at now, which is far more renowned but full of assholes.

whoahwhoahwhoahwhoah there broski.

Athletic Trainers and Exercise Physiologists are VERY different.

The similarities: both fields require a bachelor's degree from an accredited university and licensure through a governing organization, and both fields involve working with active individuals. That's pretty much where the similarities stop.

Athletic Trainers (ATs) specialize in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Athletic Trainers almost always are employed by professional sports teams, or universities and high schools with sports teams.

ATs are the ones in khakis on the sideline of a sports event who give athletes a clinical diagnosis (NOT medical diagnosis) upon injury. ATs can also do a lot of rehab work associated with sports injuries.

Athletic Trainers do NOT "train" athletes. That is the job of coaches, strength coaches, and Exercise Physiologists. They are solely responsible for preventing injuries, correctly diagnosing injuries, and rehabilitating injuries.

Source: AT student (pre-Physical Therapy) whose profs pretty much castrated anyone who equated ATs and personal trainers or exercise physiologists. Check out http://www.nata.org/athletic-training for more info!

Enjoying the thread, just felt the need to clear up the "Exercise Physiologist/Athletic Trainer" misunderstanding.

While the night scene is more diverse than what AZ has to offer, the homeless make walking between scenes more terrifying. Traffic is just horrible. I miss my 80 mph freeways. And free parking. Nurse here. I always wanted to do something in the medical field. I work nights on a progressive care unit and have for about a year and a half. I'm not sure if I would recommend the profession to anyone else. The job itself is stressful as hell. The current way the medical system is forces you to treat patients like there at a Hilton resort as opposed to a hospital.

That being said, I've only been to a few hospitals, so I can say for sure if that's how it is everywhere.

Been thinking about going back to school for biomedical engineering or something else.
