Why does nobody on /fit run?

The CDC says you should be running 75 minutes a week at least.

They only use running/jogging as an example, they're not saying you need to *run* 75 mins a week, you just need 75 mins of "vigorous-intensity aerobic activity". Which means you could run, but you could also swim, cycle, jump rope, dance, do circuit training, whatever else.

Cardio kills gains

And failing to do cardio is a good way to die young...
>>
>>35384817
Humans are animals that evolved the ability to run long distances to follow their prey. Running is only bad for your knees if you run incorrectly.
>>
>>35384861
Ya got me there. Personally, I do cardio everyday of the week (not fat, I just really like it). /fit/ hates cardio because they think it genuinely destroys muscle mass and it'll cut down their 1000+ calorie surplus, thus resulting in less gains. All it takes is one person that thinks more cals = more gains indefinitely, and more physical activity = less cals = less gains posting frequently enough that newfags see it and think it's true. There's a lot of terrible cycles of broscience misinformation here.
>>
I do 6 miles a week.

Nothing has gotten my calves bigger than running. Especially when you include hill climbs in the workout.

That thing about it killing gains is rubbish, your appetite will compensate and then some.

I run 20-30mins after each lifting session. And yes it's awesome for your aesthetics, health and mood.

The reasons why nobody on /fit/ runs:

>they think it kills gains, which is pure autism bullshit. Burned 500kcal on the threadmill? Eat an extra 500kcal if you're worried that much about gains
>cardio is more ''physically painful'' and boring than lifting
>they think runner's high is a myth and don't believe the mental benefits from cardio
>/fit/ doesn't have a playlist strickly for cardio in their mp3 players. I only listen to rap music. All day everyday for the last 20 years of my life. Yet... I need some sort of techno music to get me running, or anything with more energy than rap music

Because as many others have said in this thread, the majority of /fit/ incorrectly believes it to be bad.

Personally, I just hate the first five minutes, but once I'm past that I can keep going for miles and miles. It helps to just shut my brain off and do it instead of thinking about it. I've been incorporating it more into my lifting days as well so I get used to just running in general.

I've been on /fit/ since '07. "Cardio kills gains" was ALWAYS a meme, and serious opinions always lauded HIIT as great for heart-health and muscle-building hormones alike.

It's true that /fit/izens in general don't really do cardio much, but that's not out of any genuine belief that it is bad. /fit/izens don't do cardio because a (serious, intense enough to actually accomplish something) cardio session takes way more commitment and will than a lifting one by a long shot to see it through. And since a /fit/izen can't really take himself seriously half-assing a workout with some sorry horseshit like 15 minutes of light jogging, the choice is *always* between either running hard sprints or just not bothering and focusing on lifting alone.

That's the recipe for successful permabulk, no?
>>
>>35385875
Good point, but you've mentioned stalling progress?
>>
>>35384988

No.

My overall caloric gain has ALWAYS increased when I added cardio into my life.

For example:
> just lifting
200 cal burn + 2500 cal intake per day

> lifting and cardio
600 cal burn + 3100 cal intake per day

I swear this is the truth, it's like the cardio stress stimulates my body to eat more, even beyond the burn of the cardio.

plus cardio burns fat. So as long as my diet is protein based, the result is a more fit and muscular body.

I run 3km 3 times a week (that's light recovering cardio, not an exercise really) and I do HIIT twice, one uphill running session too.

The reason why /fit/ doesn't run is cause it feels horrible before you get some proper cardio gains. For real, I used to be like that. Lifting a lot but cardio just killed me so minimized it. Started doing some serious cardio and I feel so much better nowadays, feels better than any lifting session, weirdly enough.

NO.
Depending on how much running you're doing, best case scenario, you interfere with your gains a bit and won't be progressing on squats/deadlifts as quickly. Worst case scenario, you seriously injured your legs, which is what you want to avoid.

I would not run and lift heavy in the same day. Running on legs tired from squatting is dangerous and vice versa. Depending on the volume, squatting heavy 3x a week + training for running, you very likely won't be able to recover, depending on how hard you train running. I'd only do SS 2x a week and focus on running. Be careful of adding weight to the bar, you can if you can handle it. But if you don't make any progress, don't fret, although you very well may still depending on your age (you're on 4chan so I assume you're like 12, so you'll be fine, especially if you eat enough). Training 2x a week will at least maintain the gains you've made on SS.
>>
Running feels "heavy". I'm not out of breath, I'm not fat, I lift frequently, but still it feels quite horrible. I see people running faster than me and it looks light and efortless. Does this happen to everyone or does they have this terrible feeling of wanting to quit and die as I do when I jog?

I just have this weird weak feeling in my legs when I run. I can lift pretty decent weights but running is just not working for me.

It will become pleasurable, right? Cause if there
's no prize, I'm gonna cut back long distance cardio and do HIIT only.

>>
>>35386525
>Is running at a beach better or worse if I'm inexperienced with running?
It's more difficult and it won't really help you in finding a good form. It's more demanding for sure. It may be easier on joints (assuming foreshore) but then again I'm not sure if it's that good for under-trained ankles; also you're likely going to run with a permanent degree of inclination (it may vary a lot depending on your beaches) and uneven terrain/occasional rocks or less sturdy sand can turn evil.
TL;DR "It depends"
>>
>>35389207
It's one of those faddy things that people discover and say: "Oh, the system's been fucking me over. This was the reason I couldn't get fit. I'm gonna do this!" And then they injure themselves. Barefoot running is good in principle, it teaches you proper technique, but in reality you need a little bit of protection and shock absorption on the bottom of the foot; not much, minimal running shoes are ideal. It's shit but we have lost that toughness after wearing shoes for so long. It's fine on soft surfaces but on concrete you'll fuck your feet up.

Ight lads listen up.
Long distance running is great if you already have the cardio shape for it.
However, long distance running does kill gains if you don't match your meal timing and nutrition properly.
For an average person, HIIT cardio is the best. You can burn more calories and it's more manageable. However, once you are fit enough, LISS blows HIIT out of the water. For a decent runner a 10 mile run at like a 10 minute mile pace is a relaxing experience, it's practically meditation for 45 mins. I can do that and burn 800 cals happily over doing like 15 minutes of HIIT cardio where I'm at deaths door to burn 400 cals.

For new guys, start with HIIT cardio, do it 3 times a week, then start to incorporate some LISS cardio. Learn how to properly pace, get good shoes, and learn how to run properly. Running long distance is fucking amazing guys, I can't explain to you how great it is, it's better than drugs once you can run without getting tired.
>>
>>35389348
He's right though.
Most people who have knee problems are locking their knees intermittently.
Others who get ankle pain(very common) are heal striking.
You have to practice running with bent legs and properly flexing your foot against the ground, run softly.
There really is technique to it.

ya our bodies weren't made for all the distance running as much as for sprinting.

especially if you want muscle mass.

running 3-5 miles probably no big deal , but getting up toward half marathons has more wear and tear than its worth
>>
Sprint interval > distance
>>
>>35389365

thats interesting - switch off to LISS?

lots of sprinters seem to always have knee and joint issues tho.

but they are usually past 40.
>>
>>35389510
Yeah ok, if you are a high level sprinter or runner who runs every day, youll have some joint issues.
Spoiler alert lads, guys who lift weights at any high level also have joint issues when they are older.
But yes, I think switch off to LISS as you get in shape.
I noticed that getting in shape with HIIT carried over.
So like my last cut, keep in mind I'm an ex fatty who never ever ran in his life, I start by doing HIIT 3 day, moderate intensity for 8 minutes and then maybe walking sometimes at night.
Then I worked up to basically HIIT 5 days per week moderate intensity.
Then I worked up to HIIIT high intensity for 15 minutes but 3 days a week and then 2 days of just walking on an incline for 30 minutes.
After 2 months of doing that, one day I was like hmm I'll run outside- ran 3 miles without stopping, never more than a mile in my life, within two weeks I was running 3.5-5 miles 3 days a week and doing HIIT 5 days a week, eventually(6 weeks) I was doing HIIT 3 days a week and running 8-15 miles per session 3 days a week and then faster 3-5 mile runs the other days.
Now im bulking and only run once every 2 weeks but still run about 5-8 miles each time without it being that much harder.

My point is that coming from HIIT I seemed like I had a lot of carry over
>>

The gods of cutting aka combat sport athletes use cardio to cut.

Haven't been that fast in years, unfortunately.
Most recently 21:30 on a fairly fast road race in March

>runs 2 miles in 13:30 with no cardio
When I was a runner and never touched weights I ran 2 miles in 10 minutes
I stopped running and started lifting, but if I had any endurance at all I'd be unstoppable

>not becoming the unstoppable machine

canines such as wolves and coyotes are a perfect example of an animal that is handicapped when it comes to their endurance. We can actually sweat through our skin so we're able to run longer distances without over heating. Our aerobic capacity and physiology is unmatched where endurance is concerned.
