Grats man.

I've been trying to quit for 3 years, quit and relapsed at least 10 times until a couple of months ago when it "felt like the right time".
Haven't smoked in a bit over two months and no cravings whatsoever yet.

When they taught us how to do tracheostomies they gave us some pig lungs with the carina and trachea intact. So we tubed them and inflated the lungs and your picture reminded me of that. Pretty cool stuff, I caused atelectasis in my piggy from clamping the pressure release valve off my bvm

Or, if you are like me you have COPD or restrictive lung disease without being a smoker. Thanks Chronic Bronchitis, asthma, chronic rhinitis, and pneumonia!

New drug will hopefully be approved in 2 years called dupilumab that will stop future scarring of my lungs by curing asthma, chronicrhinitis (hay fever), chronic bronchitis (and eczema).

I tried to get in the clinical trials but I can't because of restrictive lung disease. I have about 60% lung function and I'm starton gschool in January in a climate that often reaches 0-10 degrees during the winter. Should be fun!
I've gone through 3 tissue boxes today and many, many layers of skin on my nose have been ripped off, the outside of my nose has been bleeding every day for about 3 days now.

But listen, we're all going to make it.

Smoked for 4 years, constantly put off quiting because everyone told me how hard it is.
Quit 2 weeks ago and I gotta tell ya, I think that the "it's so hard" rap is basically propaganda.
I had a couple withdrawal pangs at the start, but they were so mild and insubstantial that most of the time I just thought I was getting a lil' hungry.

There's no such thing as "general recovery".
After around age 30, everybody's lung function starts to decline, slowly, but steadily, due to what another gentleman briefly touched on. It's a wrestle between your lungs defensive system against constant barrage of foreign particles and other specialized cells in your lungs that deal with these particles. (the concept of anti-trypsin vs. trypsin released by macrophages and neutrophils in the lungs, for those of you interested).
Once the elastic walls in the small sacs of the lungs (alveoli) are destroyed, they are destroyed for good. The rate of decline in lung function increases with age because we lose this tug of war slowly, however in smokers, the rate of decline is much faster due to self introduction of large and constant amounts of foreign particles.
Your lungs don't recover after you quit smoking. BUT, it is entirely possible to go back to a rate of decline comparable to those that have never smoked.

Here's my obligatory "go to" speech I give to my patients.
Unlike many other preventable cancers, many of smoking related cancers cannot be effectively screened. Basically what this means is that for most people, by the moment you start noticing symptoms, be it coughing up blood due to lung cancer, blood in the urine due to kidney cancer, or GI symptoms due to pancreatic cancer (yes, all these are all cancers commonly associated with smoking) it is often too late, like some would have less than a year to live late.
And for those with severe COPD...no longer able to do the things they once loved...liftin'? play with their kids? sex? no, they don't even worry about those anymore, instead, they worry about not gasping for air in agony without their oxygen tank, which they famously carry around.

There are effective ways to quit. Bupriorion, Varenicline, both of which have some side effects to worry about. Nicotine, either via gum, inhalers, or patches are all viable option. However, nothing beats someone who has seen some of the suffers of either severe COPD and smoking related cancers. As someone who smoked from about age 12 to about late 20s, I was scared shitless to ever touch cigs ever again some time during my medical training.
>>
>>35356694
Get him to go to the gym with you. Don't even bring up the smoking part in the beginning. My dad came with me for a few months but he was diagnosed with brain cancer and had to stop going. He's a vegetable now. Do something while you have a chance. Watching your father wither away is deeply saddening. I can't even describe it.

You think it wont happen soon but the inevitable march of time will catch him one day. Do something before then.
>>
>>35356569
Probably don't notice it because you both taste like ass
>>
>>35356817
>Your lungs don't recover after you quit smoking

Every medical professional says other.
Only in the most hardcore of smokers does it cause such damage to the body that it is unrecoverable and in this case it becomes a disease.
>heart disease
>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
If you were just a casual to moderate smoker and you quit before the eventual decline of all body parts (average 35 years old for men).
You have entire years of cell regeneration.
If you work your butt off and give your body the tools to repair itself it can make a damn good effort.
5 years after quitting smoking (assuming you do not have a chronic condition brought on from smoking) all risk factors for any disease drop to the same rate as a none smoker for your genetic makeup.
>tldr
>If you quit early enough you'll make a recovery
>the longer you put off the more you gamble the chance of gaining a chronic illness that will make recovery impossible
>all of this shit is genetic and there is a possibility you can smoke until you're 90 and nothing will fucking happen.

For anyone interested, while I do not promote vaping for most people. If you are having issues quitting cigs, vaping is a useful tool.
I did it months ago
On a weekly basis I dropped my nicotine levels by 1mg per 30ml bottle
Eventually you reach the point where the concentration is so low you cannot physically be addicted anymore.
It's all in your head, just put the vapor down, walk away.
Haven't smoked or vaped since.
I can run 5 miles and my lungs have completely recovered by this point.
My heart is doing ok, my blood pressure is still a little high, though is in decline to a healthy number.
>>
>>35356575
stop then.
you've stopped before, you can do it again, easily.
I believe in you, champion.

>>
>>35355237
>Mostly don't inhale
You're not supposed to inhale you weenie
And at that rate the cancer risk is minimal
Shit, last I checked the overall mortality rate for people who smoked one cigar per day was only 2% more
If you really want to be sure just get an oral cancer exam at the dentist every now and then, they're fairly brief.

>>
>>35351657
I had the same experience. I smoked for 10 years, then decided it was enough and quit cold turkey. Easy as hell. I think there are just many parties who benefit from making you think you cant stop. The tobacco companies ofcourse, who want to sell their product. Then there are the farmaceutical companies who want to 'help' you by selling their product. And finally the smokers themselves who just want an excuse to keep smoking.

Believing its hard makes it hard. Just quit, its easy and makes you feel better.

>>
>>35356545
This
Its just the attitude.
If you think that you are making a great sacrifice by quitting tobacco and probably feel bad the next week
.. you will.
If you finally see tobacco as what it really is, you are gonna have a good time from day one onwards because physical addiction to nicotine is very mild and you wont even miss nicotine trap. I know i tried it both ways. Years of sad attemps until i changed my attitude about quitting and voila! easy as hell.
Try reading or watching allen carr's content if you dont have the right mindset yet.
