So I've been going to the gym with my friend for two weeks. I'm a beginner, he has been lifting for year or two. I get done rather quickly, so he offered to make me a more complex routine.

Well, you've got to look at two things to understand the violence against Koreans during the LA Riots. One was the fact that Koreans were relatively new to the area, so they were seen as outsiders. They were loathe to hire non-Koreans in their stores, which had previously been owned by blacks and Hispanic folk; rather, they'd hire family or friends if they didn't do everything themselves. This led to resentment from the blacks.
The big trigger though was that a Korean woman had shot dead a 15 year old black girl that she had accused of stealing (a bottle of orange juice IIRC) and the court case was coming to a close around the same time as the Rodney King beating trial. The Korean lady got off, which fueled black rage against Koreans even more after the police got off on the King beating.
