Why can't I do a pullup, fit? I'm not out of shape.

Why can't I do a pullup, fit?

I'm not out of shape. Been hitting the gym hard for the past month, dropped from a mid 20% body fat to 17% and am beginning to develop muscle definition.. nothing major at all, but I'm getting stronger.. bench press went from just 90lbs at 15 reps to 130lbs+ for an easy 20 reps..

But I cant do a pullup. I can't get myself up to the bar, let alone even commit the exercise.

Why? I'm 6'2" 187lbs fluctuating from 190lbs to 186 depending on water weight..

Why can't I do a damn pullup?

i can do like one underhand one if I jump up on the bar and use momentum, other than that no.. so I should work on my back muscle more before trying pull ups?

Doing negatives helps a lot as well.

Do those momentum pushups, and slowly lower yourself, 3x5

Throw a loop resistance band around the bar, step into it and do them that way until you can do 3

Wife couldn't either, she used an assisted machine for a bit. Removed 10 every week until she could. I got her doing deads ohp and bent rows finally, probably could've gotten there sooner, but she won't shake the "I don't want to be too bulky" mindset... I just worked on flexed hangs for 2 weeks when I started off from hungry skelly. Once I got there I pushed for at least 2 more every week, and if I couldn't get that 2nd I finished with a flex hang.

Pull ups are weird bro. And unfortunately the only way to get better at pull ups is to do pull ups. I've seen a big armed muscled up mother ducker that can barely do one, and then seen this 60lb 11 yo girl do 17

You can't compare the strength of a child with that of an adult. Children will always seem stronger because they weigh less.

If you can't do a single pullup you're either fat, weak or injured.

Figure out which one it is and stop being that.

Damn son you skinny as fuck; I'm a fat 68 inch manlet weighing in a 200lbs and I can do 12 pullups on an I-beam (shitty grip). Do you even have lats?

Seriously though do lat pulldown and work your way up man. Also your crazy alien arms might be holding you back. Levers an' shit.

Do underhanded for the first couple of weeks they're easier).
Don't jump, just grip the bar very tight and use this tension to pull yourself up.
Aim for 20 reps and you'll make 5.

Push ups help you to get adjusted to training with your bodyweight.
They work your core, which you also use when doing pull ups.
Place your hands next to your next when you're doing these.

Lat pull down, etc, won't help you get better at pull ups imo, just like the bench press wont help you get better in push ups, because push- and pull ups work more muscles than the other 2 exercises do (like the core and stabilizer muscles).
