un/fit/ newfag here. Can someone explain the benefits of weightlifting vs. body workouts?

Small, controllable, programmable changes in resistance, going all the way down to the empty bar, as opposed to your 300lbs self.

Also, relying on /fit/ for actual information is a very Very VERY bad idea.

Principally they're the same thing. The adaptations you get from training are going to depend just as much, if not more on how you actually train (i.e. volume, intensity, density, variation etc.) than on whether you're using a free weight or a bodyweight exercise.

Bodyweight training however is not an easy way to train because in order to get anywhere with your training you have to adhere to the Principle of Progressive Overload, which basically means you have to somehow improve performance over time. When using free weights this is pretty straight forward, as you can simply gradually add a little more weight to the barbell. But if you limit yourself to bodyweight exercises, there quickly comes a point where you need to learn new, difficult versions of the exercises in order to keep progression going. This can be a tough and time consuming process, and there is no additional benefit compared to simply adding weight (except maybe learning a cool party trick, if that's your thing).
So that's the main difference: When using free weights, you only need to learn a few simple exercises and can progress relatively easily. When using bodyweight exercises, things become harder and take longer.

That being said, bodyweight exercises are often safer than their free weight counterparts, at least as effective, and usually have good transfer to their free weight counterparts (meaning that if you're good at pull-ups, you can usually get on a lat pull-down machine and do well) whereas this is rarely true the other way around.

The difference is you're too fucking fat and pathetic to do a single pushup, so you are forced to use a barbell until you are at a point where you can do basic humanly functions again. If you ever get to that point, you'll know more than enough about both systems to make an informed decision based on your goals. Good luck, Moby Dick.

Also it depends on what kind of things you do outside of exercise. While it's deffiantly not true that weights make you bulky or bodyweight training is more athletic, I would say weight training isn't as affective for let's say martial artist or gymnastics. Compared to football or wresting (argueably) where total strength would be more important.
