How does /fit/ feel about inverted rows? They seem much better

Arguably, sure. But how do you really weight them without cursing your chest?
Look into barbell chest support rows or seal rows. It's a row where you lay chest on a bench and row the barbell underneath.

No lower back stress, a lot more weight.

Also elevating feet, start doing the eccentric portion one handed, then move onto one handed for the entire movement and you can start holding a dumbbell in your off hand.

Start doing pull ups. Then do one armed pull ups.

Slightly different, that's now shifted from a horizontal plane pull to a vertical plane pull. Your progressions would be into a front lever, as weighting such a motion is pretty difficult.

Better for your back than what? Everything? They aren't bad but bodyweight rows won't take you anywhere far. If you want results you would have to add weight or switch to a harder variation ex: front lever rows
