Not to mention his extensive knowledge of anatomy. The balance and general flow of his figures are like a gesture drawing brought to perfection.

A lot of the time I feel like I kill my figures when I aim for completion, but Steve Huston has mastered it - perhaps better than Jeff Watts himself, who is to be fair, categorically different, but their level of mastery is in my opinion comparable.

The thing with art is that it's something you need to work at, a lot like lifting.

You won't see gains immediately, some go on for years and don't see significant progress.

But if you keep at it, you will eventually get to where you want to be. You have to not be so eager to impress yourself and everyone around you and acknowledge that this is a lifelong journey.

You sound a lot like the kind of person who says "I eat a lot but I don't gain much muscle".

I say because I care. You can look at all the references in the world and sift through every book in the library - but if you throw in the towel everytime things didn't turn out the way you wanted them to I don't think it's hard to imagine why you're not where you are where you want to be. Failure is a huge part of learning how to do things, not unlike CNS (correct me if I'm wrong) when lifting for the first time. You can have everything down perfect, but if you don't have the muscle memory obviously you are going to falter a lot sooner than you would have liked.

You're going suck at it for a long, long time. Just like everything else that is worth working towards.
>>

>>
>>
>>35141237
I don't think I get your point but it doesn't seem to be making me hate art and the process of drawing any less
Sorry
>>
>>35141331

Don't worry about it, I just know what it's like. I felt the same way for a long time.

Books are great, yeah? You said you read them, but to really digest the contents you need to work and fail. When you succeed, read them again and maybe you'll see something you might have missed. Art is constant failure and feeling frustrated. That's the force that keeps all of us moving forward.

What I was getting at was that the feeling you're experiencing is completely natural. It's really just how you handle it that counts.

I think everyone here can appreciate the sentiment that you shouldn't stop doing things because you suck at them, rather, do them BECAUSE you suck at them.
>>
>>
>>35141439
But sucking at them to the point where I don't see any joy in it anymore has taken it's toll and now my soul is lost forever
>>
>>35141471

If it's not something you want to pursue then that's cool. No one's forcing you to.

But if you really want to get over this, it'd really help lose your shame. Being bad at something isn't the worst thing in the world man.

Go to the /ic/ beginners section, post your worst piece ever.

different anon but basically what he's saying is just because you've been doing something for a long time doesnt mean you've been doing it right.

Like people who've been lifting for a long time but dont see any gains because they eat like shit, or dont stick to it, or dont go hard at the gym.

Or Fatasses who dont lose weight because they eat a lot more than they think, they dont know how to diet properly or they're too lazy to exercise.

Who the fuck knows why you suck at drawing. Maybe taking it seriously means for you means half an hour a day of doodling. Maybe you dont challenge yourself and draw the same shit over. Maybe you never bothered to learn the fundementals like proportion, perspective, composition, etc.

Either way, its not our job to make you like art. No one fucking cares if you suck at art or hate it.

ah my bad, but you just seem very angry and defensive.

If it makes you feel any better ill share this with you. I've been playing music since around 15(22 now) and for the longest time I was really bad at it. I would learn solos or riffs but never played along to songs or with people so i had a horrible concept of time, which is really the most important thing in music. Ive been playing for years and always wondered why I sucked. Then last year i moved in with some incredible musicians and its like everything made sense. Just from watching them and listening to a few of their tips I improved so much. I began to listen to music in a completely different way. I began to practice with a metronome, and to learn things like ear training, theory, harmony, etc.
Now im a lot better, but i got so much left to learn. Its a fucking journey man. Its not a competition, comparing yourself to others is the worst thing you can do, the arts are not about that.

On a side note, i used to draw a little when i was a kid and always had an interest in art. It wasnt something i was good at or took very seriously(like i did with music) but i liked it. When i was 17 i took a drawing class at my local community college just for fun. In such a short period of time I improved sooo much. It was a small class and the teacher gave me a lot of good feedback that helped me improve. It made me realize art was something anyone can learn, and when i went to college i decided to be an art major.

When I was in university the art classes were completely different. It was like 40 kids and the teachers were fucking retarded. I hated the pressure of the deadlines and constantly having my drawings compared to others in my class. It was too much pressure and I ended up changing my major, which i somewhat regret. But now I dont have to worry about impressing anyone and drawing is fun.

well if you understand all the basics you're probably not fucking terrible.

Being an artist/musician is a state of mind man. You need to be aware of what you're trying to do. Learning the basics and proper technique is important because it helps you achieve your creative visions(the stuff you see or hear in your head), but you do need to have clear goals of what you wanna achieve. Thats the only way you'll develop your own style and find yourself as an artist.
I think the problem with a lot of artists or musicians is they lack originality.

May drawing gainz and lifting gainz come to you, brother.
>>
I came back to this late because I had to lift, any drawfags left? I just don't know what I should focus on first for practice, should I do gestures, work on mannequin frames, beat it into my head to not do symbolic drawing, etc? I've been trying to get into this, but I feel like I need a structured regimen of some sort.

Have you accepted Loomis as your Lord an savior?
>>
>>35142952

I've had Loomis on my phone and computer forever, but it's just overwhelming picking a place to jump in. I get how he constructs forms with the mannequin frame, but then he just pulls out some mindblowingly awesome thing on the next page and I just struggle to make it work. On top of that he has a ton of figure drawing from life in there that I have trouble getting.

The books are great, though.

best thread on /fit/ this year tbqh
>>
>>35142993

I'd say do the things you like to do.

Too many people read books with the impression that it's going to give them everything if they copy it, and then set their limit at loomis and fall short of it. They plateau and quit.

I'd say read Loomis, read Hampton, read Vilppu, read Mike Mattessi's "Force", but really do your own thing.

If you see yourself straying and doing something wrong, look around you and see who's doing it right.
>>
>>35143135

I'll try. I like drawing from my imagination more than drawing models, so focus on the mannequin frame and such in Loomis? I got Vilppu too, but haven't read it yet, will check out the other you recommended.

Should look up how mirror neurons function. Getting down when the information is ready to actually come up and out vs. it brewing is key to having compassion.

It's like lifting, analogously, that the strongest still warm up to perform at all.

There's more information on light perception as well -- certain receptors obtain light information and some dark information, etc.

Wisdom is principal. Awareness is key to life.

Stupid whining art students ITT

North Campus here is mostly engineers and arcitects, but there are some art students around.
There is a tree lined walkway going to a building from a courtyard with a clock tower, as I'm walking to my two hour fluid mechanics lecture, worrying about how difficult the material is and my other 12 credits of math and science I see them most days of the week.
>The lounging art students.
They are sprawled all over the grass, sketching birds and trees and shit while eating extremely well decorated cup cakes and basking in the sun. The cup cakes I think are what got to me, the art girls compete to bring in ever more elaborately decorated deserts for the class.
I was having a bad day once and came really close to just kicking this faggot in the face as I was forced to step over his legs on my way into class because foot traffic gets dense when classes switch. I step over this art student and he looks at me, makes a 'tsk noise and says
>do you mind?
I've never struck anyone in anger, but this was the closest I think I have ever been, I just stood there autisticly for a second staring at him and perhaps he realized he might get kicked in the face because he kinda scooted away. I ended up just walking away without saying anything.

Anyways, nice thread. I generally enjoy sculpture and architecture more than 2d stuff but I can never forget Otto Dix

>I step over this art student and he looks at me, makes a 'tsk noise and says
>"do you mind?"

We've all been there. Art programs in mixed academia for the most part is chock full of pretentious little shits on mommy and daddy's dollar and earnest people who were mislead into thinking that the same linear progression of everything else in life applied to art.

Take catharsis in the fact that he probably wasted $20,000 on a liberal arts degree.

To all you would be artists, save yourself debt and do research on what programs are there simply to keep the teachers employed and consider an atelier. There are good schools, but they are overshadowed by the shitty ones.
