I read an article on a powerlifting site less than 4 hours ago that squatting with vertical shins was impossible if you're doing the lift below parallel and that pretty much everyone's conventional deadlift would mechanically require vertical shins for a good lift.

One of the russian warm up things is squatting ATG face to the wall, hands up, toes right against the wall, so your knees physically cannot pass your toes. If you can do that, you can squat with vertical knees.

when your knees go in front of mid-foot, your knee starts undergoing shearing forces, that can tear your ligaments apart over time.
sitting back when you squat is crucial for knee health.
