I am going through something that I think many people on this board are also going through; depression. Specifically what is referred to as walking depression. I can still preform my functions, but the world sometimes seems devoid of color, no joy, no excitement, just fatigue characterizes much of my day.
I bring this up in this thread because I try to use it as motivation. People that have this affliction may think this is strange at first; one of the hardest things to come by with any form of depression is motivation. Waking up you feel robbed of your energy and you have to fight to not stay in bed all day. But that's just it, you have to fight. What I realized is this fight isn't just getting out of bed, it extends to all facets of life. I fight my depression for control of my body, of my time and of myself. If I feel like skipping an work out I get my ass out of my chair that instant and march myself straight to the gym. If I feel like slacking off on a reading for class, I take out my books and start reading. This isn't easy, but a good fight is never easy. And the thing with depression is it doesn't go away. It comes back stronger each day, which means you need to as well. Each day is battle for control of me and I never intend on losing.
Even if one day my foe proves insurmountable, it's indefatigable, distorted, face looking down at my broken self I can hold my head high and know that I fought with every ounce of blood, sweat, and tear that I could produce.
My depression, life, whatever problem you may face realize this; it may have the power to destroy you, but only you have the power to defeat yourself

To me its not so much as brushing off negativity, instead it is using it as fuel to drive past adversity. And I think in following your goals, whatever they may be, you necessarily end up receiving positive social feedback in some sense or another. As for my aunt's happiness, I can assure you she's happy. She use to work on cruise ships before settling in Vegas (she met my British uncle on a cruise ship), and while her lifestyle is unorthodox, she does live in the city of sin. She smokes, she drinks, she sunbathes, she parties, and she hangs out and works with people who do the exact same thing as she does. It's just a lifestyle you can't maintain with children. Last time I visited for spring break, we went to a open air bar, drank beers, smoked cigarettes, and laughed about everything under the sun. I don't care how much you insist she's unhappy, she's not.
