Diet Coke still has way too many calories in it.

cheat day has psychological benefits you colossal faggot. you obviously haven't seriously begun lifting if this is your mindset.

the two possibilities are:
a) you dont and never will lift
b) you lift believing the "dirty bulk works" meme

a cheat day can benefit in so many ways, not just to mix up your palette and keep your body from expecting the same things. a cheat day offers an achievable short term goal and a reward for doing so. the only bad thing a cheat day could ever offer is if someone abuses it and goes more than 500 calories over their maintenace.

why does /fit/ have to be full of fucking fat neets who believe every second post they read on here and then regurgitate it two weeks later. i came here to learn about fitness and nutrition.

if i wanted to hear regurgitated dribble based off nothing but faith in the person you read it from, id go to a religion board

I'm trying to remove his dependency on sugary things, a juice box a day is still better than 5 cans of diet coke a day. He'd get some nutrients or vitamins out of it at least. And regarding the rice, chicken and veggies simply aren't satiating enough for him. No carbs was not an option for him.

No it is not you fucking retard.

Pic related.

Some zero calorie sweetners don't even spike your blood insulin (asparatame doesn't). Diet drinks are god tier for getting fatties to reduce their calorie intake easily. You're literally a gains goblin.
>>
>>35007785
>>35007793
Get this, he won't even go for juice or water. Yes diet coke has of course less sugar and calories but I can't condone drinking 5 a day and not drinking any water.
>>
>>35007837
Literally why not? If he could simply drink water he would have switched by now. He needs manageable and achievable goals to start moving towards his end goal and diet coke is literally the best way to start. Diet coke is a huge boon to anyone trying to lose weight and you're a faggot for taking it away from him. Even if he drinks 5+ cans of it a day.
>>
>>35007837
DIET COKE IS BETTER THAN JUICE. THERE IS NO "HE WON'T EVEN GO FOR JUICE". JUICE IS BAD.

There is literally nothing wrong with drinking diet coke for a fatass, in fact it helps curb the appetite because of how filling it is. Replacing diet soda with juice would not help him with drinking more water and would make him consume even more calories. You know literally nothing about dieting and you're most likely harming your friend in many more ways if we can find this much wrong with what you say in one short greentext story.

I recommend leaving him alone.

I didn't take shit away from him, I merely told him that other options were "preferable" and he didn't give it a second thought. I was trying to get him to lose weight the best way I can which is how I lose weight, by completely changing my habits and abandoning all that which was a staple of my diet before (even if it was diet coke). He eats 5 times a day but thinks that by drinking diet coke he's fine which is why it's bad for him, it's justification for his shit eating habits. I'm sorry I didn't mention this earlier in the conversation but diet coke has a psychological effect on him.

Most people cannot discard their former life at will. One of basic tenants of behavioural modification is gradual exposure. You want to make (or inspire) small gradual changes that the person doesn't see as threatening and can quickly internalise. Then when you have that you want to build on that with further changes until your small changes amount to big difference.

When you're dealing with a fatty the best way to move forward is to not focsu on weight so much but to a) speak about their goals and inspiration hoping to kindle their internal intrinsic motivation and b) encourage and support SMALL changes that are manageable even without huge amount of motivation.

Yes, just drinking water would be better (but drinking juice would in no way be better, juice is full of sugar). But most people can't make such a massive switch and if they try their motivation will not be sufficient to keep them on track. This causes yo yo dieting.

If he drops 30kg and can bench 2 plates 6 months down the road sure, get him to quit diet coke. But until then diet coke is ome of few thinks he can enjoy without guilt.

Protein is almost as abundant as B Vitamins, and most of the population consumes over the maximum recommended amount of protein for their body weight. One 8-oz. sirloin, for example, has over 100% of daily recommended protein. Meanwhile, it has no carbohydrates, no fibers, and it's missing a number of key vitamins and minerals. Nevermind the cholesterol, trans fat, and carcinogenicity.

To assume that meat, let alone red meat like steak, is necessary for a healthy diet is a fallacy. If someone is on a diet or is trying to get fit, and they are quitting eating steaks, that's actually a good health decision. By mocking that, you're clearly demonstrating your ignorance on this topic.

overtraining exists for novices and intermediates too. what you guys are talking about is overtraining in advanced athletes where it takes weeks or months to recover. it's not hard for a novice/intermediate to train so hard that performance suffers/declines, but it's not so dramatic since they recover quickly.

Kek, it's funny. Being an endurance athlete I know a little bit about overtraining, and I'm sure this applies to weights as well. At my peakest few weeks last year I did 24 hours, 35 hours, 30 hours and then a 25 hours week, consecutively, 25% of those hours were "high intensity" (what you pussies who do HIIT for 20mins a week do). Literally felt great every single time I got on the bike. Never had a passing thought of overtraining, and I never suffered any consequences of it lol. (not even mentioning the 3 months before where I was averaging 18-20 hours a week and did some 6-8 hour days)

Overtraining just doesn't happen, unless you've been 'training' for like a month and decide to pretend you're professional

Approx. 0.37g per pound of body weight, so it's usually about 50–75g of protein for the average person at a minimum intake. Recommended intake is anywhere between 60–130g and maximum recommended intake of protein is about 160–210g. Anything above that is waste and simply converts to energy (kcals). At significantly higher levels, it can actually damage the body and strain your organs.

Go on, mock vegans. The fact of the matter is that veganism and vegetarianism (there is a difference) is healthier than a meat-filled diet. I'm not a vegan, and still occasionally eat meat, but I fully recognize that abstaining from meats is a far healthier dietary decision.

Perhaps you should do some research into the matter. It's clear that your current erudition is approximately fuck-all (i.e., /fit/ and BodyBuilding.com).

>>35010530
That's incredibly easy. Just eat enough kcals and increasing protein intake a bit to help with muscle repair. But that's assuming I would WANT to work out that intensely. I wouldn't, since that is not only excessive, but damaging to your body. Unless you're on steroids, you shouldn't be working out "like an absolute savage" (almost) every day.

It's morr real than yall seem to think, bros. Most PEs don't even know about it which is dangerous because as an average person you're more liable to it. It's called Rhabdomyolysis. Pretty severe, heard of a few cases.

We all want them DOMS, but not muscle fibres in our blood stream..

https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhabdomyolysis

In saying that, us high performance athletes who stay well hydrated have no thing to fear.
>>
>>35008082
Which is why we eat more than just steak.

Have you NEVER seen a list of the average /fit/izen's diet? EVERYTIME someone asks someone what they eat, it's always "Lean, 10% fat meat" and "a whole SHIT load of vegetables."

I demolish a 5 pound bag of broccoli in almost 2 days. Pound per pound, I probably eat twice as much vegetables as I do meat. It's all about moderation, my mang.

Also, you made me respond to low-tier bait, m8.

In other words, you eat meat once a day—which is still over your entire day's worth of protein—and have veggies (no fruits?) the rest of the day? Bullshit, I've seen the "average /fit/izen" eat meats and eggs throughout the day, as if it's a staple of each meal and every other snack. Regardless, you don't need to eat any meat AT ALL to get complete nutrition. Instead of eating that meat, switch it with legumes, lentils, or even bread and you'll get ample protein. Alternatively, you can eat bean curd (tofu) or wheat gluten (seitan), both of which tend to have HIGHER percentages of protein than red meats or even chicken. Unless you're stranded in the wild, eating that high in the food chain is completely optional.

Good for you for eating that much broccoli. That's almost all your protein for the day. Eat another pound, or eat any of the protein sources I mentioned above (there's more than just those), and you have all your protein. If you eat lentils or legumes, you can get complete proteins and achieve all daily intake recommendations for the ten essential amino acids.

>It's all about moderation, my mang.
That's an outright fallacy and you know it. Should I lace my foods with only moderate amounts of arsenic, since it's all about moderation? Or how about break my bones occasionally, since never breaking a bone is too extreme? That ancient Greek platitude is specious and logically absurd when fully applied. Just as I don't need to be consuming a moderate amount of fluoride, lead, or mercury in my diet because they're inessential, so too can I safely avoid meat entirely and continue to live a healthy life with a fully nutritional diet.

>Also, you made me respond to low-tier bait, m8.
And your petty appeal to moderation isn't bad? Regardless, I was stating my sincere opinion. You may think it's "bait" because /fit/ is retarded enough to treat veganism and vegetarianism as a running joke, but the needlessness of meat is an established fact.

you're retarded if you think the amount of protein recommended to normies is the same that /fit/izens need.

I'm 190 pounds and I try to eat around 160 grams of protein per day WITHOUT going over 1800 calories while on a college student budget.

I buy eggs in bulk and boneless, skinless chicken breasts. I buy cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and peas. Sometimes, if I feel like it, I'll buy myself a tub of greek yogurt from costco. Among other things, they all have one thing in common which I like very much.

They're cheap.

My family is Korean, and so they like to cook a lot of traditional Korean foods using bean curds, like silken tofu stew. Even so, silken tofu stew won't help me reach 160 grams of protein per day, and it's not like I want to just eat soup all the time.

The only place that sells seitan in my city is Wholefoods, and I'm almost certain the prices on Wholefoods seitan is manufactured. 38 bucks for 18 ounces, but it's really only 8 ounces of seitan when it's drained (Also, I live in Hawaii, so getting things shipped here means I have to break the bank).

Vegan protein powder is even worse, and it's literally nearly thrice as expensive as my usual whey powder.

Maybe you're not trolling. Maybe you're really sincere about all this; that's fine. I'm not gonna go ahead and lynch you for it. But from a purely nutritional standpoint, there's really no hard evidence that can conclude moderate consumption of non-processed meat is really any worse for you than any other diet.

If you want to argue ethics, you got me there. I'm completely untrained in debating the ethics of veganism, so I wouldn't have much to say; but as far as healthy eating goes, I just don't think you're right about it.

I'll give you a little experiment. Drink at least 1,5 gallons of water a day, for a week. And you're retarded if you think /fit/'s pathological obsession with protein is anything more than a serious concern. /fit/'s recommended intake of protein (which is really just whatever BodyBuilding.com recommends), which hovers at around 200–350g, is neither reasonable nor even safe. Protein over a certain amount is wasted and is used as energy, like carbohydrates, except they're more difficult to break down and turn into energy, which puts strain on the body. At much higher levels, such as the amount I just specified, that can actually damage your body or, in rare circumstances, be fatal.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16779921

Protein is essential to healthy bodily functions. Simply meeting recommended daily amounts, and completing each ten essential amino acids per day, is sufficient to satisfy this nutritional requirement. Any further protein is just used as energy and is less efficient than carbohydrates, and at high enough levels can be detrimental or even dangerous to one's health.

>but getting it from proteinrich sources isn't a bad thing
It isn't, which is why I recommend protein-rich sources like legumes, lentils, and wheat. Meats, however, are excessively high in proteins and tend to have poor micronutrients along with them.

>Stop pretending veganism is the only way of doing things.
I'm not, but veganism and vegetarianism is much healthier when it comes to a complete nutritional profile. There are other diets that can help one lose weight or stay within healthy ranges, but I am not aware of a single diet that is more efficient and complete than a plant-based one, especially one that incorporates high amounts of meats.

160g/d of protein is on the high side, anyway, and is actually close to the maximum recommended daily intake levels for some people. But if you want to reach that goal, you can easily do so by replacing that meat with vital wheat gluten (seitan), whose protein tends to be a HIGHER percentage of total energy than meats. Beans and lentils are also incredibly cheap, cheaper than meats in many circumstances, and completely satisfy your protein goals—they're complete proteins, too. In my opinion, Whole Foods is a marked-up scam store that panders to people who are GMOphobic and keks of Big Organic. Seitan is also frequently sold at major grocery stores, including even Walmart, so I recommend checking elsewhere besides Whole Foods.

Regardless, it sounds like your socioeconomic circumstances, coupled with the scarcity and high importing costs of living at Hawaii, limit your diet significantly. I'm sorry to hear that. While I still think you can still meet your protein goals without meat (and your protein goal is a bit high), I definitely understand opting for meat because it can be cheaper. That's what my family did, before we started doing some research and checking for alternatives. I live in the mainland US (Texas), though, so it's not as expensive here.

>But from a purely nutritional standpoint, there's really no hard evidence that can conclude moderate consumption of non-processed meat is really any worse for you than any other diet.
What of the carcinogenicity of meats, especially when cooking it? What of the fact that most meats tend to have horrible macronutrient–micronutrient ratios and primarily consist of proteins and lipids, whereas plant nutrients of the same energy can achieve similar protein intake with much higher micronutrients? There's also the matter of how our teeth, saliva, stomachs, and gastrointestinal tracts evolved to eat and digest fruits and vegetables as dietary staples, with meat being much more difficult to process given our anatomy. I could try to find some sources on these claims, though I don't have any saved and will thus have to look on Google Scholar and elsewhere where I know I could find some further information.

>If you want to argue ethics, you got me there. I'm completely untrained in debating the ethics of veganism, so I wouldn't have much to say; but as far as healthy eating goes, I just don't think you're right about it.
I've been trying to avoid using ethical arguments; since this is /fit/, I should probably stick to the nutrition of it all. I think there are strong ethical reasons for abstaining from meat, along with a variety of other reasons, including the massive impact on global warming and the gross inefficiency of global meat production. The ethics of meat consumption is a whole other, and arguably more complex, topic than the mere nutritional factors, though, so it's best to leave that out for now. Anyway, in my opinion, the nutritional benefits of a plant-based diet—or at least a diet wherein meats are a specialty—are strong enough to alone justify a switch.

alright, here's a thought for you. what if meat isn't any more carcinogenic than plants or whatever, but it's just that they've had more research put into them? If you consume enough water, it'll give you fucking cancer.
Oh and did you know that even walking outside is carcinogenic for multiple reasons? Taking a plane is sure to be a death penalty, not to mention having someone in the same room take a smoke. I'm sure you're one of those people who actually goes out of their way to ensure ALL possible sources of cancer are removed from their lifestyle. Right?

And even if you add all these sources up, you end up with a probability to get cancer of a few percent. Eating less or more meat isn't going to change that significantly. Stop worrying and start living.

I eat a couple of bananas on a day. This gives me around 6 fucking grams. Yeah almost the 60-90 you get. I mean, good for you, but I don't get that much from my alternative sources. I eat a lot of meat and a tub of quark before I go to bed. No protein powder, if you actually believe me.

The reason why meats are considered more carcinogenic is of the chemicals used and produced during cooking and processing, the methods whereby they're cooked (especially high-temperature methods), and how they are digested. This is why colorectal cancer in particular is associated with the consumption of red and processed meats. Some plants have naturally occurring carcinogens and anticarcinogens, but there is no evidence of carcinogenicity among the vast majority of plants. While it's possible that this could just be the result of gaps in research, I seriously doubt that. In fact, that is a specific claim that could be scientifically studied and concluded in a meta-analysis of current research on carcinogenicity in meats and plants. Care to cite that meta-analysis? Or, let me guess, it doesn't exist?

>If you consume enough water, it'll give you fucking cancer.
[citation needed]. I'm pretty sure that's bullshit.

>Oh and did you know that even walking outside is carcinogenic for multiple reasons?
Now you're just trying to employ sophistic ambiguation to try to undermine the integrity of my claims—claims, by the way, which are scientifically substantiated and a simple Google search could tell you as much.

>Taking a plane is sure to be a death penalty, not to mention having someone in the same room take a smoke.

>And even if you add all these sources up, you end up with a probability to get cancer of a few percent. Eating less or more meat isn't going to change that significantly. Stop worrying and start living.
Actually, each 50g of red meat you consume a day constitutes a 18% increase in chances of colorectal cancer. That's about two slices of ham a day, or a 2-oz steak.

Come back when you actually have a substantive reply, not just specious, empty bullshit.

As if it's actually more expensive. That's a fucking excuse and if you bothered to check into how much it would cost to go meat-free, you'd see that it's less expensive. Tell me, how much does it cost for a bag of beans and rice? Is that too costly for you? If so, then I hope you can make it out of the slums of Kenya and join me in the rich world of $14,000/year split among four family members here in the United States.

Maybe it's because you depend on meat for your protein like a staple while neglecting to make sure your side dishes have much protein. Perhaps if you rearranged your meals so that your main dish is a plant-based protein and your side dishes also had sources of protein, you'd be able to easily exceed 90+ grams of protein a day (not that you need that much, anyway).

I'm just giving my opinion based on what I know and the evidence I've seen before me. Ultimately, your diet is your decision. I personally think that you can easily achieve and excel your current dietary goals by eliminating, or at least minimizing, your dependency on meats and eating a wider variety of foods. You'd be surprised, as I definitely was, to know just how abundant protein is. If you don't, then good luck with your diet.
