When I'm calculating my TDEE, what do I put in as activity level? I'm a student so I spend 4-5 hours on my ass, but I also travel 4-5 hours on a bus, and walk a good 40-50 minutes. I lift intensely 4x a week.

Do I select "little or no exercise (desk job)" or "Moderate exercise (ex: exercising 3-5 days/week)"?

If it fits your macros.

Seriously, if you're getting way too much fat in your diet, your body will tell you. If you go to your annual physical and get all the labs like your doctor says, and you're not getting the shits (as I would do at 150g of fat a day), then it's probably fine.

I go insane when I have a rest week every three months. I feel bored af and just want to lift heavy shit. The day before lifting again I feel extremely excited to get back, which is what gives me extra motivation and helps me push to get my lifts up.

The rest week is mental if anything

you're not trying hard enough or not focusing on strength enough

even if you built zero muscle and just gained fat you'd still have gained strength due to improved leverage

or maybe your pre-workout nutrition sucks or is non-existent, when i first started training i would lift on an empty stomach and my strength was inconsistent / random as fuck

now i eat a protein cookie and maybe a banana pre-workout, my strength is more consistent now

hard to make gains when your strength is yo-yoing every workout

Hm, that's too bad - the reason I split it up like that is because I play sports and this helped me manage it better. For instance, I don't want to do arms and then go throw a ball for 90 minutes, but I CAN do core/legs beforehand.

What if I used this routine:
1. upper/core
2. lower/core
3. olympic lifts

>Can i still get strength gains if I go from bulking to cutting?

I get strength gains when I cut. I dont cut as hard as some people do. I do about a four to five hundred calorie deficit.

Also, you might get 'strength gains' simply because you are getting lighter. Right? Like if you lose a pound of weight a week, thats a pound you dont have to lift for many exercises.

>>34924728

Dont know if its a good routine, but you should be hitting muscles hard once every four or five days. You should be hitting your absolute maximum, and then recovering for however long it takes. So the problem with mixing up exercises, is youll be hitting certain muscles multiple times, which means either that you arent recovering, or that you arent pushing yourself hard enough.

Right like if I do a bench press one one day, and then OHP on the other, I am using my triceps all the time. So if I want to build big strong triceps I should probably do OHP and bench press on the same day.

On to my question. I did workout A of SS (meme) and my weights lifted were:

Squat: 52.5kg
Deadlift: 70kg
Bench: 45kg

Are these numbers relatively good for my first time? I'm going to drop them back about 10% to make sure I learn how to not snap my shit up

2) How important is water? What will being well hydrated do for me?

3) How can I differentiate between soreness and a legitimate health issue?

I dont understand how Obi Wan was obligated to hang out on tattooine as Lukes neighbor for 2 decades.

Why? What did that do? Why was it so important that Anakins children be monitored? How was any of that their problem or concern?
>>
>>34925487

It's SS so 3x5 squat+ Bench and 1x5 deadlift.

I'm actually pleased with my results. Though of course I'll be monitoring my form for a long ass time. I think I might be trying to keep my back too vertical for the low bar squat.

Same reason he kept the light sabre. The force runs in families and it was only a matter of time before Vader came looking for Luke. 3PO and R2 landing on the planet started the process a little early, but it was inevitable, the emperor himself knew it. Vader was strong with the force, but being basically a cyborg at that point, he wasn't nearly as valuable as Luke.

Since I was a kid till about 10th grade I did a mix of wrestling/bjj/karate.
Then I stopped being athletic till about the past year. Just turned 21 and was curious if I could still pick mma back up and be decent. I've been doing SS for a bit and finally have some muscle back on me.
Just wondering if it's too late for me to go to tournaments or something.

Hey /fit/. I"m 6'0" or so, 22 y/o and around 150 lbs. I haven't lifted a day in my life. I was reading the sticky/various threads for a while now but I get alot of mixed signals over what I should actually do and i'm having trouble working up the guts to actually walk inside the gym (I don't know why but the idea of people watching me has been making me self concious, even though normally I don't care about stuff like that.) Any tips to overcome this? I tried signing up for a local gym once but when I walked in and looked around my body went cold, I got nervous and just left.

Is SS a meme or not? I assume it's not but I want to make sure since I've seen people post it as if it was.

http://www.muscleandfitness.com/workouts/workout-routines/4-week-guide-starting-strength?day=1
Is this right? Should I follow this program?

And what should I eat to gain weight when poor? I'm talking 10k in debt college student lives off ramen noodles poor. I know I need alot of protein but meat is expensive.

Any other tips for a complete newbie are greatly appreciated as well. Thanks guys.

I think i fucked up my rotator cuff
Doesn't seem too bad at the moment and i have had it happen before, i just didn't know what it was, was always on the same arm too
Because it has always happened on the same arm could this mean that arm is fucked?
And is it recommended to do any exercise while its healing? I don't want to stop lifting, but if i have to is there any other things to do while it heals ( Ex. Bodyweight), and about how long should i wait to start lifting again?

Is this good progress? Hit 6 months of lifting today

>As of May/20/15 (I could lift more but started the progression here)

>Weight: 160 lb skinnyfat DYEL

Squat 140 lb x 5
Bench 130 x 5
Deadlift 155 x 5
OHP 90 x 5

>Now Nov/15/15 (6 months)

>Weight: 170 lb skinnyfat DYEL

Squat 250 x 5
Bench 190 x 7 (idk my 5rm, hit this huge PR last workout)
Deadlift 295 x 5
OHP 135 x 5

So how is this for 6 months progress? Started on SL, switched to something a bit more intermediate with volume days and ramping PR days (will post on request)

It takes a delicate touch

If its between really hitting the PR and grinding it out at the risk of injury

OR

just failing and getting it next time

I'll bail. An injury isn't worth it. I push myself, but I know there's always next week in the gym. I'll be lifting consistently for the rest of my life (right?) so slow and steady wins the race.

Go to a home improvement or garden center. Buy yourself a couple hundred pounds of pea gravel- it's about 5 bucks per hundred. Then get yourself some tube socks and a sturdy canvas bag (Military surplus stores have THE best). Make a bunch of 5 and 10 lb bags with the rocks and socks...then you can load those into the bigger bag as needed.

The pullup bar, rock bag, a stopwatch, and your own body is all you need to get into great shape and build quality functional muscle. Good luck to you.

I went in my first time today. I think people noticed another new face and wanted to see what sort of stupid shit I'd do but really no one paid attention to me. It's all in your head. Yes your face will get red, you might even grunt a little. I failed a squat rep and had to drop the bar. I didn't even bother to see if anyone saw me do it

Coincidentally I'm running SS as well. Depending on your goals SS could be good or bad for you. I'm slightly overweight but I'm planning to gain more so I can lift more. I'm under no illusion that SS will give me abs or make me shredded. I want to ride the linear progression train as far as possible.

As for your food problem. I don't know where you live. I have debt too but I can afford 80 dollars a week for 3000 calories a day

Lol wrong link there.

>>34925416
>>
>>34926792
Oh hey me. Didn't see you leave my body.

I wanna be stronger and look better. Balanced I guess?

I'm ~150 lbs. Do you think I should cut or bulk when just starting? I'd like to reach at least slightly visible abs and i'm not too interested in getting huge (There's no way i'd be able to eat that much) but I'd definitely like to hit 170 - 180 without looking fat sometime.

When you started how did you acquire your maxes? Did you just keep putting on more weight until you couldn't do anymore? I'm assuming you do around 80% of your max for a 3x5 right?

I live in the south-central USA (Oklahoma specifically). I pretty much live on ramen and occasionally sandwiches (sliced chicken breast). I need to get another job but the last one I had caused my grades to drop too far and i'm still making up that semesters GPA drop.

Thanks a bunch for the help. Regarding SS I really don't care if my schedule is particularly complicated if it works. The link in my post seems really short and I don't know if only 3 exercises 3x a week is enough. I'd like to make gains are a decent pace and not waste any noob gains I can get.
>>
I just bought pic related.

I know that they're great for squating. But does it make sense to use them for other lifts? I don't want to exactly do a power clean and then find out the hard way that I'll be heading to snap city. But I don't also want to look like an idiot, doing it barefoot.
>>
>>34926906
forgot pic
>>
>>34926891

I ramped up so did a set of 5 with the bar, added 5kg and did another set, then kept going like that until I thought adding weight wouldn't allow my form to continue. I then did another 2 sets at that weight and that was enough.

Our end goal is probably the same. However, I'm choosing to bulk and get even fatter because I want maximum noob gains. I'll cut down once I'm done with SS which means I won't be taking my shirt off in public for another 7 months or so lol.

One routine I've seen that gets a lot of praise if you want to cut while lifting as a noob is all pros (since you want the abs) but don't delude yourself by thinking your strength progression on that will be as good as someone on SS. You only add weight every 5 weeks.
>>
>>34927110
I'll probably stick with ss then. What routine were you talking about?

Also I still want to make sure that the link in my original post is solid.

A: Squats 3x5, OHP 3x5 and Deadlift 1x5
B: Squats 3x5, Benchpress 3x5 and Deadlift 1x5

AxBxAxx / BxAxBxx

Is that actually good? It doesn't seem like that much but obviously I have no clue.

>>
>>34927185

That's the basic SS template. According to SS 3rd edition you do that for a couple of weeks then trade a day of deadlifts for power cleans.

Buy the book. He lists additional exercises you can add in. Or if you're keen on SS with some accessory work Google "kethnaab starting strength". He lists when and what to add in to round it out a bit. Just don't jump into the accessory work straight away, it should help your main lifts not retract from them.

The workout I spoke about for cutting you can find by googling "all pro bodybuilding"

Stop running like a faggot. Tense up your abs and maintain posture, don't get slouchy when tired.
Look into if you might have a disparity in strength between your lower backmuscles and abs. If your pelvic bone is slightly tilted it can start hurting when running and shit.

Rowing into your waist with elbows tucked = narrow grip. Supinated grip works well here. This hits the lats hard.

Rowing to upper abs/sternum with elbows roughly at 45 degrees: medium grip. This hits a good mix of everything in the back.

Rowing to upper chest/neck with elbows flared: wide grip. This hits mostly the upper back (rhomboids, middle trapz, rear delts) and doesn't hit lats very well.

Is there anything wrong with buying a leather lifting belt of ebay for around 30-50 USD if it is the same width all the way around the belt, single prong/lever, 3.5-4inches wide and 10mm+ thick? I don't see the purpose of paying close to 200 dollars plus another 100-150 more on shipping for the Inzer stuff, given I live in Australia. If the belt fits all the basic requirements, is there actually any serious flaw in buying a cheaper one off ebay?

If you're in Aus, get your belt through Underground Elite. It'll come to about the same price and you wont have to pay through the nose for international shipping.

Can you pay a lump sum for a fixed term up front, or is it week by week bullshit?

I'm in NZ and the others in this city do some shady sounding weekly bank transaction and say nothing about how you can cancel. Already missed a day of lifting because if you want to join them, you have to do it online. Tbh, I'd rather not go there, but it's proximity makes it convenient. I'll just have to shift everything a day back and have no Sunday rest day this week.
>>
>>34929961
I don't know if you can pay a lump sum, but i pay weekly, i am not sure what you call it and haven't looked into it but i think you have to pay for a month Ex. you want to cancel but you are on the second week of the month you are paying for, you have to pay the next two weeks to make for the entire month
There is no contracts, just go ahead and tell the manager that you only plan to be there for a while and plan on cancelling, he should tell you how things go so there wont be any issues when you need to leave, from what i read some people complain about not being able to cancel at snap, but then they get replies that they are retards because they didn't look at the cancellation rules, the people that complain usually send in a voice message or something

>>
>>34929938
Try it and find out. It doesn't seem unreasonable. If your average weight isn't changing at the desired rate, lower the calories further.

>>34928272
I seriously doubt you're maintaining 176 pounds at 1400 calories daily. You're likely miscounting.

>>34926906
Some people like doing deadlifts and other lifts in them, some prefer flat soled shoes. It just changes the angles/proportions of the lift.

>>34926743
Your body prioritizes metabolism of alcohol before other macronutrients, which can cause issues with excess fat storage and/or decreased protein absorption if you drink too much of it.

As long as you aren't drinking a ton on a regular basis, the effect is minimal.

>>34926072
Squat.

>>34925654
1) Check your form. Maybe something like anterior pelvic tilt is causing stress for your lower back.

2) hydration throughout the day will probably have a bigger impact than hydration during your workout. When in doubt, drinking more isn't a bad idea since it's harder to over hydrate than drink too little.

3) Dull aches/muscle soreness are usually fine. Sharp, radiating, or stabbing pains are a cause for concern. That's not set in stone though.
>>
>>34930567
I assumed you were a guy setting up a homegym, and couldn't do bench due to whatever. No reason to floorpress then, and I don't think you need much else if you already benching.

Although, some guys find that db flies give them the sickest pump, so maybe try that.

I am work, so can't post an infographic, but basically you can vary the effort needed to perform a push-up by setting legs progressively higher and changing the positioning of hands. There is quite a variety of these, some use ropes or rings, but I wouldn't really bother if you have access to a gym and don't really focus on gymnastics related stuff.

How trustworthy are doctors on diet? Mine told me to fill up on milk and cheese. I've been underweight for a long time, assuming it's a combination of sleeping with window open year round, constant fidgeting and taking the long way as much as possible, and eating really fresh and organic food.

I'm 6 foot 118lbs and eat 1500-2500 calories a day, but my doctor told me to put butter and cheese on everything because I have a fat and carb deficiency, just worried about what that would do to my heart in the long run. I want to live to 100+ but my heart is always on overtime since I take adderall, intentionally stress, and have genetic breathing troubles, can never fully catch my breath.

Currently my diet is water, chaga tea, kombucha, eggs, nuts, shitload of veggies, chicken, beef, fish, and occasionally bread, dairy, wine, and fruit. No pork, processed meat, candy, or desserts.

Should I follow my doctor's advice and just eat blocks of cheese?

Yes, do what he said. It's only a temporary measure until you reach a healthy weight. Personally, I would go easier on the butter than the milk and cheese.

Is a 2 minute plank after each session enough to work abs alongside squats? I used to be able to push up position plank for 5 minutes but my times have been slowly decreasing.

What is the best preworkout supplement for the price? I've used optimum amino energy in the past and it worked well.

Planks are a joke exercise from my experiences. If you want abs, try landmine 180s and cable crunches.

Stalled out at 250 lbs after dropping from 292. Currently doing 20m of intense cardio then stronglifts with all my numbers steadily rising. I notice my musculature increasing and the size but the belly fat is still present. Diet is strict keto with high protein each day, about 180g. Sodium is checked at 2300mg and carbs at 30g max.

Tips or should I just stay the course? Been about 3 weeks in the 250 range. Fluctuates from 250 to 253.

Your diet is what is causing you to be underweight as it is primarily low energy density foods. Milk and cheese are energy dense which will help you to gain weight which will make you healthier.

I take two whey shakes a day, one in the morning at work (desk job) and one right after I lift.

Should I switch out the morning protein with a slow release (casein) or is whey still ok if I'm not being active at that time?

I got a cold and today I couldn't finish my last 2 squat sets (5x5 75kg) but my 90Kg deadlift was done. I'm only 1 month into it and I don't really want to deload.. What do I do?

You had a cold, so it's reasonable to think that you were especially tired. Try the same weight next time.
