I finally did it /fit/, I pulled my back deadlifting. My question to you is whether I should see a doctor or not? It hurts really fucking bad, like the pain is shooting down my back thighs. I can't move at all without feeling like a knife is in my lower back. Is this something I just walk off or could it be more serious like a disk is out of place?
>>
nah man don't see a doctor, you're ok

mate this basicly says that your spine was already weak

people with great deadlifts can pick up triple that with a rounded back with no problem

No one said ever, I did them for three fucking years and constantly had these phantoms pains all over my back in random places, I just got used to them and debated which year im going to a chiropractor, stopped doing them for a few months just because and literally all the pains disappeared, never again, ruined my aesthetics by giving me birth giving hips and almost fucked my back

Snapped my shit up very badly deadlifting too much weight with poor form. Fixed my shit up perfectly again by deadlifting with textbook form.

A well performed deadlift is pretty much the best back-strenghtening exercise in existance.
Problem is few people actually understand the fundamental movement pattern, and too many people are always trying to push the envelope on this exercise, which can obviously lead to bad things.

>>34865864
He has a point though, if you are purely after aesthetics or cant get form down without a coach its better to not deadlift
>>
>>34865671

Our bodies subconsciously prepare themselves for whatever obsticle we are about to hurdle.

Youre less likely to get hurt deadlifting 600 pounds than lifting a 100 pound bag of cement because the moment you step into a gym and the moment you smell the iron or whatever que your body uses, your body is ready to rumble.

http://psysci.com/2012/11/06/classical-conditioning-of-drug-tolerance/

This involves heroine but basically if people took 1/10th the dose they usually take in a novel location they were very likely to die. The body just wasnt ready.
>>
Doctors are awful at diagnosing back problems, waste of money going to them right away they will xray mri etc charging a forture only to tell you that its too early to tell and you should rest take painkillers etc and if it persists to go back

get some anti inflammatorys STRONG painkillers and muscle relaxants and you will be all good

I reckon people injure themselves on the diddlylift is because of 100% lower back and 0% hamstrings are used.

>diddlylift with what i thought was 10/10 form. Camera shows all the right signs. Looks like a solid DL.
>go heavy (heavy for me) for 10 reps
>i can stand up straight after the set. >my lower back is fucked for a few days/week
>question my form
>research, what many deadlift form youtube vids
>realise i wasn't activating my glutes and hamstrings on the lift.
>next day, use correct form (push knees into crook of arm which activates hamies n glutes.
>pull up, glutes n hamies are firing
>no pain after lift and better ass and hamy pump

>>
>>34866062
you should not be stretching your spine in every imaginable direction when you have undiagnosed pain, should be common fucking sense.
>>
>>34866055
I thought so too and keep hoping that's it, like an irritated piriformis or something. But I haven't squatted or deadlifted for a year and still have nagging pinching pains at certain angles in my lower back. I tried just warming up to squat like a month ago and 95 lbs was all it took to get that familiar feeling again so I noped my way out of the gym.
Got a taste of sciatica and now I'm too scared to squat or deadlift. I used to love squatting too.
>>
>>34865484
Go to the hospital, they probably give you a muscle relaxant and painkillers.

I have what I believe to be a misplaced nerve or something in my forearm and I get exactly what you described in my shoulder for certain movements, like hammer curls or when setting up dumbbell shoulder press. I haven't get it diagnosed by a doctor yet but I can say with 99% certainty that its a misplaced nerve, and that doesn't go away without corrective surgery, no matter how long you leave it.

>>
People fuck their back up because they don't use their glutes and Hams. They use almost exclusively lower back to straighten themselves out.

Learn to do the lift and use appropriate weights and it is extremely difficult to cause damage.
>>
>>34866313
Been deadlifting for 5 years no issues.

Made me more athletic adding inches to my vert and long jump.

Helped me pack on mass.

I also respected the exercise and didn't ego lift keeping solid form. Would stop at technical failure.

Would put deadlifts on par with squats in terms of risk but that's just my opinion.

except you're wrong
"Spinal Extension Exercises

Strengthening the longissimus thoracis via spinal extension requires exercises that push the muscle through its full range of motion. Because of its central location in the body, nearly every form of vigorous exercise will require the spinal muscles to contract and extend. Some examples of exercises that rely on spinal extension to work out the erector spinae are back extensions, swimming, rowing, pullups, pulldowns, deadlifts and cable rows. All of these exercises work your upper spine, using either weights, your body weight or the pull of gravity as resistance."

>>
>>34866438

Well yeah, but this is only part of the longissimus muscle. If I had divided those muscles further the list would've been twice as long.
Anyway, I'm not dissing the pull-up. Love pull-ups, but people just have to realize that there's more to back training. And it's not always just about what makes you look swole.

It's seriously not that much, I think anyone who regularly trains for over a year can get 250. Assuming your not coming from some completely sedentary lifestyle. Matter o' fact, a friend of my took a guess pass, he benched 2pl8 after not being in the gym for 5 years... he also works a pretty physical intense job, but still 250 isn't that much mang.
>>
>>34865918
Deadlifts and squats are no more dangerous than any other exercise if done properly. Of course you have to factor in more weight = more risk which can be applied to all movements. The reason you see so many idiots in your "practice" or whatever, is because of the amount of weight they were fucking with was too much, improper form, and not training properly. I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn.
>>
>>34866752
>Deadlifts and squats are no more dangerous than any other exercise if done properly

so you're telling me deadlifts and squats are equally dangerous as walking?

>>
Doesn't sound too bad.
Start worrying if the pain doesn't decrease within a day, or if you have reduced strength in your legs, trouble controlling urination or reduced sensibility in your legs. If you have any of these 3 symptoms, you need to go to the emergency ASAP.
Also if the pain is located to a certain vertebrae or two. You can check this by applying (a little) pressure to the spinae of each vertebrae. Go to the GP.

Sounds like a pinched nerve/lumbago/ etc unspecific back pains, nothing to worry about.

I took a week long trip to snap city a few months back. Here's how that went. No doctor visits.

>diddly lift 250 lbs after being out of the gym for two years
>lower back pain starts, pain down the legs develops
>sciatica or whatever it's called developed, basically pinched nerve due to swollen disk or something
>just took some advil, iced the lower back and did easy stretches that worked my hamstrings
>after a week of no gym and plenty of rest, nerve pain went away
>deloaded diddly all the way down to 185lbs and have made sure my form is perfect every time
>pain free ever since

I think flares up when I do heavy low bar squats but it's not severe pain and it never lasts more than a day or so. It's usually right above my ass where the glutes attach so it might be something else.

But definitely get a doctor to look at it. I was super lucky I didn't snap my shit up so ymmv.
>>
i did squat, deadlift, and press yesterday and i believe area where my SI joint is sore/aches; mostly when i sit
>>
>>34865484
Hey bro,
so yeah you did it.
Those shooting pains are sciaticas, that means you damaged a disk.
You dont need to see a doctor, its highly unlikely you need surgery, all hed do is give you pain meds maybe which you dont need.
What you can do is go see a physio, if you dont want to spend money or something,
do these
http://www.spine-health.com/wellness/exercise/mckenzie-therapy-mechanical-low-back-pain
http://www.fixyourownback.com/Index.cfm
or go here.
It's most likely a bulged disk, and you can actually correct that through movement, it's not the end of the world, I've done it, and I've fixed it, was only out like 2 weeks.
>>
>>34867503
Yep, that's exactly what happened.
Sciatic pain from probably a bulged or inflamed disk, like most inflammation pain, itll just go away on your own.
but OP you really dont need to see a doctor, I mean if you want to be safe, especially if you start to feel a significant amount of numbness(damage to nerve roots), then ok maybe. But seriously a bulged disk is very painful, and a full hernia is very bad, but it's very unlikely, and honestly with a full hernia you wouldnt be on fit considering going to the doctor, you'd want an ambulance taking you right from the gym.

>>34867680

>>
>>34866106
Could be a problem with your sacroilliac joints causing the piriformis, etc. to become super tight (I've had this issue). Take some anti inflammatories, see if it gets any better, and consider getting a scan. A tight lower back can also cause this, so either way I'd consider seeing a physiotherapist.
>>
>>34865484

doc here, you could have sciatica. google it to see if it fits, and go see a doctor. also google straight leg raise test and try that and if its positive go see a doctor asap.
