Swim thread?

What's a good distance to swim if i'm going to be swimming every 4 days?
>>
>>34842830
Depends on what you want to achieve with swimming and your previous experience. Have you ever swum before and if so for how long?

is there an equivalent of couch to 5K for swimming? My gym has a pool and I'd like to take advantage of it for those sick cardio gains

I try swimming a mile. It's exhausting, but you get use to it after a while.

Don't swim a mile if you can't swim a mile.

Depending on lap size, do from 6 - 10 laps if you want to keep it casual.

Find out the length of the pool, and do the math.

Casual: half a mile.

400m warmup
4x50m drills (one arm drill, catchup drill, finger drag drill, shark fin w/ kickboard drill)
20x100m, 2minute splits
100m cool down

It's about pacing, not so much about distance

I swim 4 km 6 days a week after lifting. I'm in the pool about an hour and twenty minutes. Not nearly the kind of workout I would do when I was swimming competitively, but it's gotten me in good shape.

Can you actually achieve aesthetics by swimming? I'm a lazt cunt with bad ankles who hates sweating, so swimming seems ideal.
>>
>>34846090
Swimming is probably the easiest way to achieve cut/10
It's a constant full body workout.
Specifically though the arms, shoulders, chest, waist, hips, thighs.
All of the noticeable parts of the human body.
>>
>>34846090
If you just swim, the results will not be comparable to those that could be achieved via weightlifting

I personally do not sweat very much while lifting, but I do sweat a lot when running so idk

Easier for me to just
http://100swimmingworkouts.com/

Let me ask, have you ever seen a fat swimmer?
There is a reason it's called "ottermode"
Note that a mixture of lifting+swimming can reduce gains, however muscle density increases.
You probably won't be able to lift as much as the guy just lifting, but man...
You'll be able to lift a lot more than it looks.

I swam in college. Probably the best thing to do is join a masters club because your technique will be god awful.

If you can't afford it, your best bet is to figure out your pace time.

What I mean by this is if the pool is US standard (25 yards) then swim 2 laps and take your time. Whatever this is, add 10 seconds and round up to the nearest 15 for your interval time. If the pool is 50 meters just take your 1 lap time.

Example you swim 50 yards (2 laps) in 40 seconds, then 1 minute is your interval time.

Using this time, do 10 50 yards on a 1 minute interval.

Doing some math that will be 500 yards in 10 minutes.

If you hit all your intervals (finish every 50 yarder under the minute timer) then try bumping up the yardage or lowering the interval.

This is for beginners. I can't emphasize enough the importance of getting a coach and mastering good technique. It's not like running where if you do it longer you become better at it.

On the college team I swam 6 days a week and had practice twice a day, and I'd say on average we swam 10000 yards a practice and all sets fell into that interval pattern and go something like

5 200 yards on a 2:30 pace
5 200 yards on a 2:20 pace
5 200 yards on a 2:10 pace
10 100 yards on a 1:15 pace
10 100 yards on a 1:10 pace
10 100 yards on a 1:05 pace
20 50 yards on a :30 pace

Technique work, main set, ect...

But you could modify what I just put above and shorten the distances, or lengthen the intervals
Shorter distances are easier to do because you get more recovery.

A good goal to shoot for would be 5000 yards a day. Good luck.

I'm a very good swimmer. Would have made it to state in pretty much any other state besides Texas (or Florida & California). In college now, haven't swam since senior year. Has anyone done a swim/lifting routine? I've pretty much been a DYEL skeleton my entire life.
>145lbs
>5'11

I've recently started counting calories, and I've gained 10lbs in about a month.

Basically, I'm trying to decide if I should do ONLY Stronglifts 5x5, or do Stronglifts and swim. Back in my swimming days I was doing between 3,000 and 6,000 yards a day, 5 days a week. However, I don't know much about fitness and am worried that much cardio will negate any gains.

So, I want to hit 160, 165lbs, get some muscle on my arms, shoulders, traps, whatever, but also keep good cardio.

Then I'm sure you realize that those 3 states are some of the most competitive. I'm sure I missed a few. Our practices generally went up to 8k on average but I always had to leave early for baseball practice. I didn't swim 6k because I sucked and couldn't swim further or faster.

>21.06 on 50 free
>20.14 on 200 free relay

Sure I wouldn't have come close to winning or even placing at state. But competing in Texas I didn't even make it out of Regionals.

I always had to leave for baseball practice, because we switched from morning practices to afternoon for some retarded reason.

I wasn't trying to impress anyone. Only conveying that I'm a decent swimmer so I can put in a lot of yardage if thats what it takes.

I was only asking for advice on how to juggle or balance swimming and lifting, and if any potential gains would be negated by swimming too much.

With your intervals, does that mean no rest between intervals? You just bang out 10x50yards at less than 1minute per 50 straight after the other?
>>
>>34849567
usually in competitive swim in between sets you get 1-3(5 at most) minutes break.
I would do 2-5 minutes if you are attempting this. (I would also recommend starting off slower for splits)
>>
>>34849677
Okay, I'm not really understanding, by 'set' do you mean that all ten repetitions of 50 yards is one set, and then rest 2-5 minutes after that?
>>
>>34849816
No what I meant is that say the interval is on a minute and you do the 50 in 45 seconds, then you get 15 seconds rest before the next one. Then at the minute mark you would repeat that 50 on the same 1 minute interval until you did 10 50's total

kk former national level swimmer here for small country (4-5 million)

swam 6-7k a session
started off at 3 sessions per week:
tue,thur,sat

built up to 6 (everything but sunday)

everntually started doing sessions in the morning, at my peak right before i quit i was doing 10 sessions a week

sessions took 2 hours, warmup was roughly the first 20/30 mins, 1-2k

it was so fucking fun when i had a good coach, when he left i quit cause replacement coach was absolutely shit at coaching us (he was good at coaching little kids who can barely swim a lap)
