I think people really overestimate the scope of Rail Wars. Seikon no Qwaser had more characters yet he released most of the classic doujinshi everyone loves around that time. He certainly isn't working on Rail Wars any more, but only pic related and the scroll have come out since it aired.

I would agree to disagree as the work demand and pressure in Japan are insane compared to the west. Like it happens that an ambulance need to be called to hospitalize employees because people just collapse half dead during working hours in their workplace from overwork. For Japan something like that is just Tuesday, they expect said employee to be back the next day early morning, oh and of course no pay for the rest of the day the employee slacked in the hospital, because he is just a weak a lazy fuck.
If you work as an artist/animator/designer/etc for a big company you will NOT have anything to do on the sidelines if you value your paycheck, companies themselves also make sure of that by stalking you online.

Bro, the 80s are past okay? Japan has long realized that overwork does no good to people, sure big companies treat people like oranges that you just squeeze the juice out and throw away what's left but that is nothing new that is done everywhere around the world. What you talk about is overzealous otakus that actually got into the anime industry and even work for the shittiest pay in the most terrible workloads just to live the dream so companies take full advantage of that, they pay shit and demand insane workloads. People passing out from was never the norm, at least companies never expected that, sure they do expect a hell lot but that just means the employee is being stupid.
Also in case you did not know, by today animation has declined considerably in Japan with only a few big studios are having animation done in Japan and even then they hire small companies and teams temporarily that get paid with lunch money, the vast majority of the animation work is being outsourced to Korea. Doing animation in-house is very rare and usually key frame artists do it. In fact the anime and manga industry itself right now is probably in the worst shape in Japan ever.
