It really depends on the doctor and area. I live in California and the places I've gotten mine generally run on informed consent - basically as long as you know the risks (and they'll tell you all about the effects) and sign off saying so they'll prescribe 'em.
Other places yeah they stick to the old standard one year, though IIRC even the org. that says one year has reduced it to 3 months.
