Hey folks, grotto here.. Yeah, the idea for that story with the girl in college was kind of a spin-off of Two Become One.
The idea for Embel's species was kind of a speculative scenario. Life on Earth originated four billion years ago in an abiogenesis event... but, what if such an event occured again? Would the new form of life be similar at all to the cellular, DNA-based life that already exists?
I imagined that not too long ago - let's say, ten thousand years - some anomalous chemistry happened in the deep ocean, next to a hydrothermal vent ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXGF3XS-yAI ) and a very simple new kind of lifeform came into existence. It was much smaller than a cell, but as it multiplied the many bodies were able to interact and cohere into a self-organizing assembly that gradually obtained a form of distributed, flock- or swarm-like consciousness.
Embel's kind are amorphous. They understand the world around them first at the absolutely microscopic scale, each tiny nanopart acting as a sensor, and can mimic any substance by organizing themselves at that small scale. Her grand-ancestor awoke to consciousness in a dark world of heat and thriving undersea life, and applied its great mind to contemplating that existence - taking the form of things in its environment, building itself into a great undersea stack similar to the vent tower it was born on. It still lives there, meditating on the mystery of the world.

The "mind" of these creatures is singular and can't be duplicated: if you carved out a chunk of Embel and separated it from her, it would become inert and lifeless, not replicating or self-organizing -- keeping whatever form it had been sembled into for a couple hours until it dissolves into loamy dust. But, once in their existence, each of these shapeshifters can birth one of their kind. They do this by placing a microscopic nucleus in a welcoming environment and waiting for the new child to grow large enough to understand itself; I like to call this tiny germ the "golden seed". It is passed from ancestor to child over and over again through time, and never duplicated. So, all of Embel's kind are only children, their lineage stretching back unbroken to that one moment of abiogenesis. Each child inherits their parent's memory... all the ages of the race's history encoded in that seed.
Embel's forebears chose to spend their life in the wild places of the world, seeking solitude and contemplation amidst the violence of nature. They made themselves into glaciers, lava tubes, craggy sea-rocks, floating beds of seaweed, exaggerating and commenting on the ragged beauty of the world around them. It was Embel's mother, who she calls Euryale, who first chose a motile life.. she makes her home in the mountains above Sara's city, wandering through the crags and valleys - one day a tangled creature made of tree roots, the next a mossy cascade spilling down cliffs, the next an elk curiously wandering at the edge of a large herd.
Embel is herself only born three years ago... her personality is inquisitive, joyful, effervescent, and she is the first of her kind to venture among humans. Her ancestors were drawn to exemplify, exaggerate, interact with and comment on the beautiful deep natural chaos they chose to surround themselves with... and Embel does the same with human qualities as she begins to understand them.

The idea for the spinoff story branches from Two Become One in the future of what I've written so far, at a time when Embel chooses to pass on the Golden Seed and have a child. Somehow there is a kind of miscarriage, in which the seed is planted in a fertile environment and then plucked again before it can really germinate. The tentative beginning of a new shapeshifter consciousness is interrupted, and the microscopic new body is flushed down the toilet or washed away in the rain. The wounded thing ends up in some dark place where it grows and eventually awakes, but with only hazy ideas of who it is and where it comes from, its most basic thought a deep yearning to find a human to envelop as Embel had Sara.
It eventually finds a girl who is just about to leave for college... it initially surrounds her without her knowing, and just mimics her perfectly, entirely seeming like the girl's skin. My idea was that the new entity would have a bit of a malicious mischievous streak, and feed off of the girl's insecurities -- exaggerating her body as she gains weight and breaks out from stress, making her always look disheveled and a bit sloppy no matter how hard she works at the mirror -- until it's a couple months in and she's depressed and about to fail her classes. Then, the shapeshifter takes a twisted form of pity on her...

One morning she wakes up to find a switch by her bedside. It's just a basic metal toggle switch like on an old lamp, and it's unlabeled. When she curiously flips the switch, she finds herself instantly transformed. Her extra weight and acne is gone, and instead she is a total bombshell -- large soft full perky spilling-out-handfuls of breasts, toned and tanned body with a hint of a sixpack, full luxurious long hair, and a majestic thirteen-inch cock. She looks like a porn star no matter how she dresses or what makeup she uses, and although she has her own face, nobody at school would recognize her because of the shapeshifter's changes to her "normal" body. Flipping the switch again toggles back to the frumpy version of herself... so it's her choice how to live, between two options that both seem terrible to her.
Until her roommate comes home while she's transformed...
Basically, the idea is to start with a pretty terrible situation for the protagonist and show how along with her roommate she explores her new body and eventually befriends the mischievous shapeshifter which has caused so much trouble with her.
I'm still working on Two Become One, and I really apologize for my utterly glacial pace. The next chapter should be done soon (1 month?) But the plot point that starts out the spinoff isn't for another four or five chapters at least... So, I haven't started working on it.

I've always imagined more like a bacterial cell. Simple cells that perform basic functions, can mass produce themselves, and communicate with one another through cell-to-cell signaling. Which all perfect describe a slime-like creature. These cells that disconnect through environmental factors or perhaps through self-suicide, lose connection with others cell and the slime creature then loses the ability to control said cell. Protein would then be the most important nutrition, resulting in the slime being carnivorous by nature. The slime would digest animals inside them, removing any matter they are otherwise unable to digest such as bones and hair.
A much more complex cellular structure would construct the 'core' or metaphorical nucleus. Composed of a hardened carbon exterior with carrier proteins which maintains careful intake and outtake of signal chemicals to/from the aforementioned bacterial cells. Thereby creating a basic nervous system. Slimes probably wouldn't possess a sense of pleasure. With their ability to feel mundanely limited to degrees of pain and temperature. Probably not dissimilar to the range of feeling of a fingertip.
The core would also act as the brain of the character. Though it stands to reason that a core would be small for survival purposes, and therefore a slime character would lack comparable intelligence to a human.
Reproduction of the 'slime' cells would be through asexual reproduction. While the core would produce a secondary core through a mitosis-like cycle where the core's carbon exterior breaks down as the internal components replicate, separate into two separate cores, and then reform the carbon shell. This would have the consequence of slimes essentially creating identical copies of themselves always. Although the bacterial cells would be very capable of taking in DNA from the environment, those cells would like be detached or undergo apoptosis to prevent mutations. Ultimately slimes would lack much diversity.

I think I can safely speak for everyone here when I say how excited we are that you're still working on this. I've never found a person that has read your story and hasn't fallen in love with or been inspired by it.
Only recently did I have a bit of inspiration to write something of that similar vein, about a being that can live around a human like a second skin. Of course I don't want to be a copy cat, but I think you of all people know how compelling the idea of that is.
We're all excited to see more of your work, but don't stress out about the speed that much. We've all been following you for years and will for years to come, so there's no rush. =D
