Hey y'all.
In about a month, or so, I will be running a DC Comics/Justice League -based game (using MWP's Marvel Superheroic Role-Playing system).
The overall idea is to crossover H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos into the DCU.
The only things I know for sure is that Cthulhu himself is not going to be the big bad, but rather Yog Sothoth (or perhaps Hastur? For "King in Yellow"/Green Lantern shenanigans), with the big guy showing up as a mid-tier boss at best.
Please send me some ideas!

That being said, Aquaman should practically be the main character, considering how often he deals with Lovecraftian entities. What kind of stuff are you looking for?
I'm much more familiar with Marvel's version of Lovecraftian stuff through Dr Strange. It is very faithful to Lovecraft's idea's on multidimensional gods and how they interact with the normal universe. How true to lovecraft do you want to go? Where they come from 'dream like' dimensions? That gods live in infinite dimensional space and the real world is just reflections of them upon our 4 dimensional world?

Alright, this is "Injustice Be Done", JSA #17-20
Basic plot is that an old nemesis of the JSA's gets sucked into a lovecraftian horror dimension and turned into a Nyarlathotep-type figure who is the herald of this cosmic horror named the "King of Tears". He comes back to the material plane to resurrect his old boss and kill one of the heroes he blames for his horrifying transformation as revenge, and the JSA wind up punching him in the face so hard it not only sends him BACK into the space between dimensions, but it also catapults Jay, the Golden Age Flash, back into ancient Egypt.

That's another storyline that's been in the comics, which I can post as well. From "The Brave and the Bold" series, it's a team-up between Aquaman and Etrigan to keep a lovecraftian horror under the ocean sealed away from the world.

No need to muddy the thread up, but I will certainly look them all up! I know that my players are familiar with "The New Frontier" and the Justice League episode "The Terror Beyond," but those might just be obscure enough that I can pick and choose plot points from either of them.
To me, I think three layers would be best.
Some basic ideas I'd mentioned
Small Tier:
Batman hunts down Brother Blood and/or other Cultists who seek to complete a ritual.
Earth Tier:
Dr. Destiny enters the Dreamlands (with perhaps a cameo by the Dream King himself!), and, by chance or design, awakens Cthulhu himself, who then must battle the JL.
Cosmic Tier:
The awakening of Cthulhu heralds the return of Yog Sothoth, Azathoth, or Hastur. Green Lantern leads the vanguard to confront them.

AS a general note though, introducing your campaign by punking the PCs with a villain team specifically tailor-made to fuck with all their weaknesses is not a good way to start things off in a game.
There's a Batman comic called the Doom that came to Gotham look into that.

And here's our villain of the show. Johnny Sorrow actually is not a classic Golden Age villain, but was retconned in by this series. You would never know otherwise though because his backstory slots in so nicely with the tone and style of classic JSA stuff.

If you got Green Lantern in the mix, look into some of the Green Lantern villains/monsters.
Specifically, the emotional entities like Parallax or ... I actually don't know the name of the Compassion one.
They're pretty much unmeasurable power so real easy to make them a final boss, and they take their singular emotions to such an extreme that almost all of them could be easy enough a reason for a role playing team need to band together to stop

How exactly is this beeing planned out?
My basic conetp was to do it in a seires of campiagsn called "arc" each acting as a riff on a classic Dc type of story. So there would be the time travel arc, the Big Hero vs Villian army arc, the Multiverse arc and so on, all threading into an overall climax
Only hardpart is picking and choosing which THings From Beyond, to use.
Dc has a metric shit ton; like they have an entire ecosystem of Eldirth Horrors.

The problem with doing Hypercrisis stuff in a game is that it's difficult to handle that sort of metatextual mind-fuckery with audience participation. Morrison's stuff is very focused on the medium of comics and doesn't translate to a non-visual medium as well.

Imagine Batman through the game beeing played making detections (this of course is done through wtaver your detective system is) about the nature of the uninverse. Beeing the worlds greatest detctive he figures out they are in a role playing game by recognzing the tropes of the story; the fact thet never use the bathroom; the dsicreet and controled nature of everything and so on.

I'll admit, I'm intrigued. We actually had a Deadpool player in one of my Marvel games who excelled at doing this.
(And it even impressed me, the ST, who loathes Deadpool.)

Also I think a great way to do that immersion is the unfmailar, That is, in game the chrcaters have no idea what eh fuck si going on; so you want to make a plot that is jst ad winding and Nyltomoprhy and fucking insane as the charcters feel;
the players should get a greater and greater feelin of "What the fuck is happeneing" and "IT"S HAPPENING!"
And using the tons of comsic weirdness in DCU as a base really helps that.
Like everybody KNOWS Cthulu, but when Scissorrmen start showing up and cutting out stats from there charcater sheets (which you of course do IRL) THEN they know shit is getting real.
Or how about having Constantine do a shit load of drugs and realinzg they are in a game, and thus avoid getting eaten by the Demons Three by delibertely stalling out the last miniutes session on pointless bullshit so all the players would have to go home.
Or status effects that start bleeding through the edges of reality; ha ha your Dice are weighted with bubblegum now, have fun with your roles against The Empty Hand; or add in drinking games (if age allowed) what better whay to simulate reality itself coming un sane than the very Gods of All There Is getting more and more intoxcated with every sanity hit?
