You guys ready for THE SECRET ORIGIN OF HOBBES?
>>84559964
I was thinking more Story Time. I always do the initial post on my cell phone for Story times so the story is bumpable. That's also why I deleted the first thread (did over wifi instead of LTE).

I never really appreciated his art style until I tried to emulate it. Bill has a real economy of lines that it hard to replicate.

Grumble. Captcha keeps on asking for milshakes but showing frothy drinks like cappucino's. I know the cappucino's aren't milkshakes but google doesn't.

This is from the first year of the strips, conveniently called "Calvin and Hobbes" The whole Charlie Brown thread made me nostalgic about comic strip Sundays (When a kind anon would post a year of Peanut comics) so I'm going to try and do the same thing with Calvin over the next 9 weeks. Or... you know get bored. One of those two things.

Kids from Age 3 to about ~7 become really really picky eaters. It wouldn't surprise me if Calvin was just over-exaggerating like he tends to do over his pickiness.

Just compare these 2 sunday strips and see just how much Watterson developed his artstyle and panel layout. No one has even attempted to do as much as Watterson did with so little space. I can't even imagine formatting something like this.

The anti-smoking movement has been so successful that I don't think people realise just how ubiquitous smoking was. Everyone did it, everyone had cigarettes and cigars, kids would buy smokes for their parents. Smoking was everywhere!

There are plenty of times where the stuffed toy is lost and everyone other then calvin sees him as a stuffed toy. ObviouslyHobbes is an elder god abomination that can only be seen by Calvin, sort of like the plot from mannequin, only more evil!

And that's the first year of Calvin and Hobbes. The Sunday strips aren't as dynamic as they will become but the important parts are there. Suzie, Rosalyn the baby-sitter, etc.
>>84561908
Watterson said that the nature of Hobbes's existence didn't matter to him. To Calvin, he was his tiger friend. To everyone else, it was a toy. Both perspectives were equally valid to the people who held them.
>>84562074
I'll try to do the 2nd year next week, though no promises. And despite doing the strip for 10 years there are only 9 books because Watterson took a long (9 month) hiatus mid-way.
That was great. I always pretend to like Calvin and Hobbs but I actually never read more than a few strips before today. Now I can stop pretending and just like it.

What's the best big book of all the comic strips? I've hardly ever read these but the few I have, I really like.
Or is there just one book of them?
>>84567601
There's a 3 volume collection of every strip, in chronological order, that I own which is called "the complete calvin and hobbes". It can be had on amazon for about $60. The old collections like the Essential C&H, indispensable etc were missing multiple strips and had them out of chronological order. Of course, you could find the entire collection on the internet as well.
