>Zootopia made over a billion dollars on minimal advertising from Disney and mostly word of mouth
>Disney seems intent on ignoring it in favor of a Pixar sequel and a "diversity" movie being released around Thanksgiving

I don't understand this at all. It would be understable if they focused more on Finding Dory/Moana after Zootopia left movie theaters but to completely ignore the popularity post release with no content or announcements of merch, spin offs or sequels just seems stupid.

Why is Disney pretending like Zootopia never happened?

Just because you don't leave the basement it doesn't mean they did not advertise Zootopia.

Also, Disney is not the kind of company that sticks with one movie forever, like Dreamworks do to Shrek.

Make no mistake, all Disney cares about at the end of the day is money. Zootopia is going to be their top grossing movie of the year, possibly grossing even more than Star Wars, and not even Finding Dory was able to catch up with it. Disney is going to be doing pretzel twists trying to get Zootopia merch into the stores in time for Christmas because they know they fucked up betting everything on Finding Dory and not the bunny cop and her smug fox.

Granted Rotten Tomatoes has been putting their credibility to the test a lot this year, but in the case of Zootopia the high praise is warrented. It's a visually gorgeous movie with some addictively endearing lead characters and touches on a lot of culturally relevant themes without beating you over the head with political propaganda.

Zootopia suffered a lot of plot changes during the development, the team literally rewrite the whole movie just a few months before release, at this point, it's reasonable for Disney or any other producer didn't give a shit for a movie that looked that it gonna blow. Fortunally, the team fixed all this mess up and the rest is story.

I don't think Moana is going to bomb, but it's not going to be in the billion dollar club. I expect it will make somewhere areound $600 or $700 million, which is plenty respectable but not the runaway hit that Zootopia was.

The only thing that could go wrong is if Moana is pretentious trash like Pocahontas was. I think Disney has earned a bit of good faith at this point though.
>>

>More than Star Wars

No, stop. It might beat Finding Dory but it isn't going to beat Rogue One, that's just silly.

Rogue One will join the billion dollar club easily, but maybe I'm a bit less sure of it beating Zootopia just because Episode VII failed to topple Avatar.

There was a huge logical gap as to why the prey were able to live with predators peacefully for thousands of years and then as soon as the age of technology came about, they suddenly decided that they needed protection from them. The shock collars have been a thing for so long in proto zootopia that predators have come up with their own cultural traditions surrounding them. There was no explanation as to where the whole mess started.

The only logical reason within the story would have been that predators were actually going savage and attacking prey, but that would have gone against the notion that the prey were just being blinded by stereotypes and that there was never anything to be afraid of. If it was an elaborate false flag operation like what Bellwether came up with in the final movie that initiated the shock collar mandate, then we still have a justification because there were still documented maulings occurring that didn't stop until they started using tame collars.

If predators and prey living together was something recent, and the predators hadn't even been allowed in prey cities until the shock collars were invented, then that might make a bit more sense, but that wasn't the case from what we saw. Predators and prey used to get along until one day, the prey decided it'd be a great idea to demote predators to second class citizens, and for some reason everyone in the city went along with it.

>>
>>84557052
Yeah, that's a pretty big hole there. And if predators are gonna get subjected ti that, I am sure they would if have made their own cities or some shit instead of wearing collars that didn't let them feel any sort of strong emotion.

Disney was not prepared for how successful Zootopia was going to be. It is a total repeat of what happened with The Lion King, where they underestimated the movie and wrote it off, while thinking that Pocahontas (which was an Oscar-bait movie) was going to be their big hit. Lion King ended up being a phenomenal success while Pocahontas got a mixed reception and is generally considered the weakest film of the 90s renaissance.

if you saw Imagining Zootopia documentary you'd understand why Disney wanted to sweep Zootopia under a rug, , the movie was being made by very thoughtless people.

"this is not about about racism" they said
while the sketch version of the final movie bluntly show animals treated like jews or niggers during the hitler era.

pxar, lassetter and rich moore had to step in and turn everything upside down otherwise it'd be either a very scandalous movie, or none at all.
>>
>>84557052

>no one is eating anyone for thousand of years >but just to be extra safe we have the "Tame
Collars"

Zootopia's writing team insane fuckup.

they simply rolled with it, i think because they ran out of ideas.
>>
>>84557752
Yeah I know all about proto zootopia. I'm not saying Disney had no reason to doubt Zootopia, however they clearly didn't have much faith left in it even after they brought in additional directors and completely revamped the concept.
>>
>>84557418
Really?
Pocahontas was considered weak?
I mean, it wasn't as good as the Lion King, but I didn't think it was weak.
>>
>>84557790
Tame collars were an interesting concept, but they were one of many factors that were making the movie way too dark and bleak and they had to go. Especially because they never even came up with a convincing backstory for the city, and it really needed one.

but it's 5 months too late for that, and those are different times, informations travel too fast to be hidden.

proto-zoo is a stinker.
>>
>>84557825
Compared to the other movies in the 90s renaissance, it was the weakest of the lot. Visually it was very nice but the writing was an insultingly simplified look at the complicated and intense relationship between native Americans and British settlers, not to mention Pocahontas herself was not at all historically accurate. She was only 12 years old and did not have a romantic relationship with John Smith.

Yeah, that's kind of the ur example of how the Pocahontas took a very complicated issue and came up with an insultingly simplified way of explaining it.

>"they're not like us, which means they must be evil!"

Someone at Disney was either so dumb that they thought this was a good lyric, or they were laughing their ass off because they thought the studio would make them fix it but they didn't.

Zootopia simplifies a complicated set of issues but it does it in a way that is much more mature and open ended than Pocahontas, and it does it through an Aesop about animals who don't directly represent real types of people. It's left up to the audience to decide how they want to read into it, because the message is universal.

Zootopia finally shuffled out of Japanese theaters after 12 weeks. Or at least enough theaters that it dropped from 4th place last weekend to no-longer-charting this weekend. Now they get to wait a long five weeks until they get it on Blu-ray.

While it is true that Disney advance merchandising seems to be playing up Dory, a year from now will be the true test. It took Disney licensing about a year to catch up to the Frozen phenomenon, and it should be a year for them to catch up to Zootopia.

As for advertising, Disney markets the hell out of EVERY release. Just because you don't remember doesn't mean it didn't happen.

You don't break a billion dollars with minimum advertising.

And what should they have done? "Our movie is still in theaters! Please go see it!" Nobody does that. And the fact that you demand a sequel so soon means your impatient. Disney has to balance their own films, as well as Marvel, Pixars and Star Wars. They already have an animated slate coming up with Wreck it Ralph 2 and new projects.

You sound like an ass!

Yeah, Civil War hit the billion before Zootopia had a chance to, but at least they can call it their most successful Disney-original movie of the year, outside of Marvel which they bought and Star Wars which they bought. Jungle Book is next closest at $936 million, Finding Dory is doing excellent domestically but unfortunately China didn't care, Alice and BFG aren't big hits, and The Finest Hours went and sank early in January.

They didn't think about it very hard, they just wanted to get a message across, and that message was: "Prejudice is based on ignorance; those people you don't like didn't do nuttin!!" Which isn't how reality works at all. Prejudice is based on negative association, meaning people see a few individuals from another group do something bad, then start to associate those kinds of people with the bad ones they saw. Humans are naturally xenophobic, and it's easy to fall into the trap of negative association because of that.

Because this movie ignores the actual cause of prejudice, the prejudice it shows feels weird and vapid. If foxes were never dangerous, why is there fox-away spray? Who manufactures that? Why would they bother if foxes aren't attacking anyone anywhere? etc. There is so much lingering prejudice in this world implying a lot of terrible things have happened, but they never show any of these things, refrence them or speak of anything historically. The fact that predators once at prey doesn't count, they were cave-men back then and it has NOTHING to do with how the modern world of Zootopia works.

This guy gets it. Prejudice exists because animals are predisposed to it biologically. When one creature attacks you and you manage to escape with your life you will not give the benefit of the doubt to the next one that shows up, you will run or kill it. That and the fact that it's very difficult to differentiate an animal from another species from every other member of that species, etc.

No shit they focus on the stuff that's upcoming/in theaters, that's how they always work. And why would they announce a spinoff/sequel this early? Hell, WiR 2 is the first movie since the Rescuers to get an actual theatrical Disney sequel and that took a few years, why would Zootopia get one so early? Especially when they have so many other movies in front of it to promote even beyond Moana and Finding Dory? And does Disney even announce Merch, besides their now-aborted Disney Infinity shit? Do you expect a press conference to announce a new line of t-shirts?

I think the point Zootopia made was that no matter how open-minded you (think you) are, you might still be a prisoner of stereotypes and even if you personally friendly to others, there's still deep inside you a fear of ominous OTHERS who'll fuck you up. Fear that might explode at slightest provocation. Once you illusion of safety stripped away.

And obviously, crime exists, and predators probably have easier way in crime career with all those claws and teeth.

I've got a better one: Zootopia is a post-Industrial development and the rest of the globe is split into enthnic-national nation-states in the way that the world had been divided prior to the Industrial revolution.

Basically, paint Zootopia as an experiment in multiculturalism and have the rest of the world consist of the wolf nation inhabited by wolves and some second-class minorities, or the horse nation inhabited by horses and some second-class minorities.

Then explain that Zootopia is a failed experiment, and that the people living in it today are living in the ruins of 1960s-1970s bleeding heart politics and post-war idealism and that they're having to live with the consequences of this blind, dumb optimism.

Finding Dory slowed down and it doesn't have legs because it's a fish.

Zootopia was like Frozen in that it was a steam engine that just kept going. Finding Dory seems like it's a lot more front loaded. It still has a fair bit of money to make but it won't cross $1B.

One place where Zootopia doesn't compare favorably to Dory is that Finding Dory has a shit ton of merchandise. Whatever money it doesn't match Zootopia for will be more than made up for in the sheer amount of plastic and cardboard shit bearing Dory's likeness. This is something that Disney is kicking themselves in the pants over though, because they made very little effort to market and merchandise Zootopia and they consequently left a ton of money on the table. I suspect they are going to be tripping over themselves to get more Zootopia merchandise on the market before Christmas.

Judy was bullied by a fox when she was a kid though, and that's where her bias against Nick came from. Part of her maturation as a character was realizing that she was still carrying that bias around with her. And what's more, the person who had given her that bias in the first place had himself changed. Maybe that's a somewhat idealistic outcome, but Judy's bias didn't come from no-where, and neither did Bellweather's or Nick's.

How did you miss the entire fucking point of that post and all the previous ones?

People are racist against niggers because niggers are associated with bad things, like crime. Niggers are associated with these things because they engage in those things more often than non-niggers. Those are facts, not opinions.

Racism is the leap from "niggers do the thing" to "niggers do the thing because they are niggers".

Now let's discuss Zootopia.

People are racist against foxes because....... why? The only reason they would be racist against foxes would be if foxes did something to inspire that racism. No smoke without fire, etc. etc.

So if foxes are disproportionately involved in bad things then the assumption that any specific fox has a higher probability of being involved in those bad things than a non-fox is a valid assumption. The statement "foxes are involved in bad things because they are foxes" is not (proven to be) a valid statement, but that's not the statement Judy makes. In fact she makes opposite intimations throughout the entirety of Act 1.

Judy is not racist, bigoted, or biased. She is rationally responding to the higher incidences among foxes of bad things that must exist for there to be a negative stereotype of foxes.

When she disregards this natural and sensible caution she does nothing more than open herself up to being mugged by a pack of feral niggers.

However, there is a big gulf between "blacks commit more crime" and "blacks commit crime because they are black."

The point of the movie is nothing to do with racism or bigotry - it's that even if your entire race is full of worthless nothings - kind of like the black race today - you as an individual member of that race can rise above the stereotype and be more than what others think you are - so long as you don't wallow in self pity and actually fucking try.

Wow dude, you sure convinced me with all those hot opinions.

Zootopia mentions racism and bigotry, but makes no commentary on it as a topic entire. Instead it makes the absolutely infantile point that there are exceptions to stereotypes (and that if you try hard you can be one of them!). It doesn't tackle the bigger, vastly more important issue: that those stereotypes generally speaking exist for a reason; nor does it tackle what should be done about them.

This is because Zootopia is a kid's movie, not high art.

What do you think will happen to all the Zootopia merchandise from the first film, if they keep pumping out sequels every year?

How can you tell the good ones from the bad ones?

Why do we NEED to take the risk?

These are our communities. We can choose what risks we want to take or not take. There's no reason to to take the 1-in-3 chance that you'll get a Muslim who will not be immediately and directly opposed to core Western values - that's not even "will this Muslim fit in an add value", that's pure "will this Muslim actually understand the idea of equal rights and democracy, integral to our liberal Enlightenment-principle government?"

If you can explain to me why you think we should take these risks, I'm all ears.

In civilized society most people are peaceful and tolerant, and the extremists who wish death and destruction on people unlike them are the outliers. In Islamic society it's the reverse.

How can you tell the bad whites from the good whites?

The majority of murders committed in the US is by whites and the overwhelming majority of their victims are white.

Can you explain why we tolerate white people?

>>

We tolerate _citizens_, anon, because we are legally and morally obligated to do so.

That being the case, we must ensure only the right kinds of people get citizenship. We can't really do anything about preventing people from getting it when they're born here, and most people born in the USA are white (until recently, anyway), which is why most US citizens are white, but it has nothing to do with whiteness inherently.

Citizenship, not colour, ought to determine your rights under the law.

But if you're _not_ a citizen then the situation is different. I'd say the same thing if Saudi Arabia chose to arbitrarily deny your visa on the basis of them not wanting to import your liberal values. It's their country, and they don't owe you a place in it. The same goes for us.

Your lack of /pol/ shows - these arguments are infantile.

Unfortunately, yes. I'd never advocate for laws that are discriminatory, because citizenship overrides colour. We are all Americans first, even if some of us aren't very good Americans or indeed very good at being American. I love this nation, but not in a patriotic way. Patriots love their idea of their nation - they have a fantasy concept of what they want America to be, and that is what they love. I love the America that I have. America is a special, unique place. It's not the best place, it's not the only free country, or any of that dumb American exceptionalism bullshit. But it is the only America, the only country inhabited by Americans, and the only country with its history. I've travelled extensively - I've been to every continent except Antarctica - but there's no other place I could live than America. There are a million tiny reasons why, and some big ones.

There is something special to me about my country, and that something special is the result of every single person in that country. Even the ghetto niggers have played a part in making America the country that I love, and how could I love the country without loving the builders?

But this country cannot be preserved in the form that I love without protection from people who seek to come here, but do not love it.

Muslims from Europe and the Middle East, Haitians, Mexicans, et. all aren't though. We have no obligation to let any of them in, and when we have consistently had problems from immigrants from certain countries, we have every right to exclude people from that specific country from migrating here.

That's not even needed, when it comes to what type of people to admit into ones country, given what they believe and how willing they are to integrate into the population, Muslims are arguably the least compatible in the world.
No need of terrorism even be mentioned, would they make a good citizen, is the question to ask when considering immigration.
No hyperbole needed, no slandering, just ask and listen to what they are saying, it's a point of concern to say the least.
Surely even you can see at least that much?

My biggest problem with the 3D is that they still haven't gotten it to the point where their human characters don't suffer from sameface.

If you have to look closely for several minutes to see that Elsa and Moana don't look exactly like Rapunzel, they still look too much like Rapunzel. You didn't get those problems comparing Jasmine to Belle or Mulan to Pocahontas.

4chan lacks formatting options, and I DESPISE using capslock for emphasis.

I toyed with doing the old o n e s p a c e b e t w e e n e a c h l e t t e r for emphasis but it's mostly ironic.

_underline_ and /italics/ are incredibly common across the entire internet and I have been using them on 4chan since 2006, before Reddit even fucking existed.

Come at me.

Nice trips, and you are correct. The Islamic ideology at its most basic level isn't compatible with western civilization. If they are not coming to America with the intention of becoming Americans then they should not be let in.

And in regards to terrorism, it's not the first generation immigrants that are the biggest threat, but rather the second generation ones. Second generation immigrants have no appreciation for how bad the culture they left behind is, and that is why so many ISIS recruits are young people from Europe and America. All they know is that the country they live in is in direct odds with the book they believe in, which fuels anger and resentment to the point that some are becoming violent. Ones that don't become terrorists are resorting to subversive political activism like making the police look the other way when Muslims enforce Sharia law in their communities.

But that's exactly why I like Moana in 3-D. Because Maui's concept art looks too much like the prince or whatever from princess and the frog. I didn't actually watch the movie but he has the same face. Maui is at least unique in the pantheon.

I know. I typically don't use emphasis because if you're writing is so shit you need to use punctuation to show that you're trying to make a point you need to stop and redraft, but I've been awake for 26 hours now and I don't give a fuck.

Sure sounds like gang culture in America. It's a bunch of poor, marginalized, undereducated kids that are desperate for power, so they grab a gun.

>Cultures change, stop crying about it.
Do you have any idea how out of touch and privileged that makes you sound? Cultures change, but they don't just change overnight. Pic related is what cultural change looks like.

As I suspected, you have absolutely no perspective. I bet you've never even left your home country. I bet you don't even know what other cultures fucking look like, having never experienced genuine culture shock in your life.

Culture shock is real, and when you begin to feel it in your own country you will hate the immigrants who cause it with an intensity that will blot out any compunction or compassion, and then the pogroms will begin on both sides. Like in Armenia. Like in the Balkans. Like in Saudi Arabia. Like in Ireland. Like in Russia/the USSR. Like in China. Like in Japan. Like in the USA, when the settlers arrived.

Enjoy your "culture change".
