Well, it depends upon which work of fiction you're working from. Obviously different writers define them in different ways. In the Dragon Age video game series, they're manifestations of platonic ideals like pride and rage, given corporeal form. In christian mythology they're as you describe them. Greek mythology has harpies and furies which are arguably the same as demons and Japanese mythology has a whole host of demons who follow different rules. Dungeons & Dragons has them as essentially just the byproduct of the strange ecology of various outer realms.
Marvel draws upon a lot of different traditions and influences, and as such they can define demons or daemons or whatever in whatever manner suits their story. Since none of them are real anyway, there's no reason why one ought to be given preference over another.
