Johns used to be one of those people who sent letters to be answered in the back of books years before he worked at DC. One of those was his idea to change Conner's origin story to be a mix of Clark and Lex instead of a human clone with super powers to resemble kryptonians with TTK. He got shut down though.
He then changed it anyways years later when he wrote this run.
