They went to the pageflip logo. Which while nice, was a little too corporate and had too many color gradients to be easily manipulated into more stylized versions. Thankfully, they went back to a classic "circle with the DC letters in it" design that was striking and easy to customize.

All things considered DC has borne up pretty well under that pressure. And of course they're still publishing the better books, so for actual comic fans rather than casuals and brand loyalists there's no competition.
