There's often a young woman or princess that has an absent-minded and/or overbearing father that disagrees with her on something, and instead of saying "your dead mother would totally agree with me you know" they're always "oh your so free spirited and beautiful and kind, just like your mother was" and it's implied the heroine's mother was everything the heroine was but maybe a little better too, to the point of perfection. You see this with Ariel, Belle, Pocahontas and Jasmine. Tiana has a similar thing with her dead dad. Sometimes you get an orphan like Cinderella, Lilo, or Snow White, and if their parents are mentioned at all it's in a positive light that implies they were saints. With Quasimodo, his parent straight up died to protect him. Same with Todd from Fox and the Hound, Bambi, Simba and possibly Tarzan.
You also see it in Secret of NIMH, where the only thing we know about Johnathan Brisby was that he was all around amazing and a hero, and in The Land Before Time, where Little Foot's mother is pretty much the perfectly compassionate mom right up until she dies.

Tenchi Muyo subverted that quite well.
In season 1 and 2, he has a lot of fondness for his mother who died when he was young. She shaped his personality.
Then in season 3 it was revealed she was kind of a crazy bitch who would play practical jokes on him (scaring her three month old baby intentionally for a laugh and drawing "I'm stupid" on his face in sharpie).
She really did die, but while he was one year old before his memories of her. Since his family are all alien royalty who live for thousands of years, the family has been pretending to be normal humans since the bronze age. So his older sister was treated as his mother's twin sister when humans were around because they looked so much alike.
When his mom died, Tenchi's sister stepped in pretending to be his mom. But since the shrine had more visitors in the modern era than it did in medieval Japan when his dad was a kid, nobody ever told Tenchi he was a near-immortal alien duke and they had to be even more careful to keep up appearances. So Tenchi's "mother", AKA his sister, went to space and they faked her death because they couldn't explain her looking like she was a teenage girl when she was supposed to be a thirty year old mother.
So Tenchi finds out his mother was a very unpleasant person, and all his happy memories of a woman who taught him to be kind and took him on walks through the countryside were of his sister who he then reunites with. To top off the subversion, his sister is a prankster too; she just had the common decency not to pull mean practical jokes on a toddler.

The main Tenchi series is also supposed to be kind of a take on Japanese mythology and early Japanese royalty (which was still shrouded in mythology) but as aliens. So lots of keeping track of family trees which gets complicated because half-siblings isn't considered incest and a six billion year old woman hooking up with a seventeen year old isn't /ss/, plus a lot of what boils down to "reincarnation, but explained as 2complicated4humans science".
Spoilers:Tenchi is God. Washu, Tsunami AKA Sasami, and a ghost shortstack are his Valar expies that created literally the rest of existence to draw him down to their level. Tsunami specifically created all life.
Oh, and the mother of Sasami/stepmother of Ayeka is the Devil. But Tenchi cleanses her with a hug.
Mihoshi was a teenmommy who miscarried and killed herself, so her parents had her brought back to life with science which rendered her whole family as temporal anomalies that not even the trio of goddesses understand (and rendering Mihoshi's miscarriage/suicide a totally different timeline that everyone remembers but her because it never happened, like DC's Flashpoint).
Oh, and Tenchi marries all the girls. Mihoshi takes his virginity by sleepwalking, cucking Ayeka and Ryoko who married him before any of the others, because they were fighting over who gets him first.
The comics continue the adventures of his many kids. One of his sons gets into a /ss/ relationship with Eve, as in Adam and Eve, who is the Jurian sister to the first Emperor of Jurai who lives on the moon. She's the ancestor of all humans, making all of himanity one giant rural royal court as far as Jurai is concerned.

I would like to take this moment to point out that Japanese mythology is really, REALLY linked to Japanese history (unlike Egyptian myth which kind of ends where their history begins) and we have very good records of the Japanese clans and royal family and all the fucked up shit that went on, which isn't even going into how the Japanese equivalent of Shakespeare wrote extensively about all the crazy incest polygamy and adventures/misadventures of the court.
So saying "I'm going to do Japanese myth/history but with aliens" was a blank check for things to get so crazy that it almost seems like Tenchi Muyo continuity was written with restraint.

Well he's never known her, so all he has to go on is the mom-tinted views of the Gems and his dad.
That said, when the revelations do start coming in, I imagine he'll be more accepting of them than the other three Crystal Gems. It's at least implied that Rose didn't know how to really love someone until she met Greg. Even then she probably didn't see him as much more than a plaything until they actually talked things out. I don't think Rose even realized what she was doing until Greg called her out on it, which in lot of ways is exactly what she needed.
She viewed herself as flawed but wasn't used to hearing someone else bring up her flaws or pointing them out, which is honestly why I think Rose and Greg worked so well. Greg accepted her not for an idealized image, but as she actually was.

Well, that episode WAS made to show how, no matter now nice Rose is, she's still an actual alien who's probably lived for a very long time, and is therefore not going to be able to gel with humans as easily as she thinks she would.
It'd be better if we got another episode after that point and we can see how Rose has grown in a more personal understanding of humans.

I think only one arc was the post-final movie Universe one, where they go to space to prevent a galactic Sengoku jidai. AllI remember from that is a joke where they encounter a race of black space samurai in a civil war and Sasami asks if they are Mihoshi's race and Mihoshi responds by saying her skin is gray scale #73 and they are gray scale #74 (because the comic was in black and white), and later Ayeka put on a dominatrix outfit and fucks a guy with a strapon off-panel while posing as his mistress so the others can rummage through his quarters for secret documents.
