I want to like Miles. He's a great way to do new teenage Spidey stories without regressing Peter or constantly doing contrived flashback minis or arcs. I can tolerate him in other books too. But Bendis just ruins it. He ruins any potential the kid has because he's such a garbage writer.

Miles is a teenage boy, whom is very much a normal kid. He is smart but not a genius. He's no nerd, but also not popular. As Spider-Man he does quip but his quips differ from Peter's. They are much more condescendingly sardonic and even biting at times. Miles possesses a darker side to his nature that surfaces from time to time. He fights it but it has overcome him before. He protects his family and his friends first and innocents second. Miles shows no sympathy whatsoever to his villains, though he will occasionally make exceptions for female villains that he is attracted to. Miles' is a ladies man and very confident in his abilities as Spider-Man. He enjoys the fame, the accolades, and the adoration of the women that comes with wearing the mask.

Miles struggles with balancing his teen life and his superheroing activities which parallels with the struggle he has internally within himself.

Good vs. Bad.

And only because everyone pointed out that maybe having Miles spam his supermove to resolve every plot was boring.

His response was "If he has it he's gonna use it!"

>>84425754

Pretty much all of his fights written by Bendis.

A super move is meant to be something special.

Lets look at where this trope is most popular, and why it works there. Shonen fighting anime.

Kamamaha might be Goku's signature attack, but he still has plenty of other moves at his disposal that he uses from time to time. This gives your fight flair, but his ultimate move is saved for when it's needed and used as needed.

Same with his Spirit Bomb. Goku has used the attack around 10 or 11 times in the entire franchises long history. That gives it some meaning.

Or look at Yu Yu Hakusho, a show with less of a variety when it comes to attacks, and Yusuke's Spirit Gun. He finishes quite a lot of fights with it but their are often unique and variable ways he uses it to keep things interesting. Like when he fired it straight into Jin's tornados, or that time he used it to jettison Kuwabara forward.

Luffy rarely ends fights in the same way, you don't see Kakashi whipping Chidori out for every last threat, modern Kamen Riders have loads of unique finishers so that when they use their Rider Kick it means something.

Now regardless of overall quality here these properties understand how to hype up a super move. Maybe not superforms as those are certainly overly used, but super moves they tend to get.

See Bendis said "I want Miles to have a super move" And I like that. Very few American comic characters have that type of set up. It's a great idea that helps Miles stand out from other American comic characters. The issue is he then didn't actually pay attention to what makes a super move something people want to see. That's the problem. Bendis is the fucking problem.

>>84426064
Venom- yes but Miles used multiple charged venom blast punches to do it.
Ultimate Peter-that wasn't even a fight and he sucker punched Miles before robbing him.
Giant Women-nope
Hammerhead- Miles' kicked in the nuts and then webbed him up.
Taskmaster-Miles has never even beaten him. It took cloak and dagger for that.
Prowler-Yes, but only because Miles accidentally killed him after he venom blasted his tech.

Venom- Miles was almost killed if not for his mother distracting Venom for Miles to break free. Vemon blast was barely enough to get rid of him in the second fight and that's after repeated hits of it and then going at it from the inside.
Giant Women-uh yes, he knock her out with his fist and kick. Venom blast was like a insect bite to her. She actually won round one and knocked Miles out.
Taskmaster-exactly. Don't you remember what you were claiming.
Prowler-still Prowler was defeated by his own carelessness and an explosion, not venom blast.

Miles was very drained both times after he used the super venom blast. Which I'd say is more of the finisher type move. It seems like he can only use it once a day if that, after which he is greatly weakened.

The venom blast only stuns or temporarily incapacitates an opponent.

What does a Spider-Sense have to do with Spiders? Last time I checked Spiders don't know if something is going to potentially harm them just by that's something's mere presence.

As for the venom blast, some spiders do have venom. The Spider Miles was bitten by was a wolf spider that had been genetically modified with the most recent strain of the Oz Formula. When you combine the two Wolf Spider(with genetic modifications)+Oz Formula you get Miles' power set.

This part of the reason why I'd prefer that Peter didn't show up in Miles' book much. The two spiders don't need to be compared so just let them do their own thing.

>>84428356
Again that's Peter not Miles.

They are different characters after all. The reason why Peter likes Miles' now is because Miles' acts differently around Peter than he does normally.

Peter would have to get to know Miles a bit better before he can question his character. As of now he hasn't seen this side of Miles.

That's the type of spider Miles was bitten by. One of the fun things Bendis said he would do was explore the different traits that can be acquired depending on the type of spider that is involved. I thought it was a good idea creatively speaking. Wolf Spider's can camouflage and also have venom.

Your basing it on its appearance. If it were simple electricity it wouldn't have had the effect that it had on Electro or the Rhino. Initially I thought it was Bio-Electricity but as I've read the book I've realized its more of a energy that Miles' specifically can emit.

It can't be just simple electricity, there's clearly more to it than that.

Unlikable? Do you dislike batman or wolverine or any of these other types of heroes as well?

And Miles is never black Peter Parker. They're very different as far as there personalities are concerned. Miles is a ladies man, who is confident in his skills and abilities, with a darker side of himself that conflicts with his desire to do good. He doesn't want to be like his uncle who was a villain but at the same time the same blood that ran through his uncle's veins also runs through his. The conflict within himself is one of the best parts about his story.

Batman and Wolverine are typically built in an environment that supports their ideology in the same way that the environment around Peter supports his. Miles is stuck in Peter's environment with an ideology that makes him as bad as the villains. Because, you know, the writers are too much of pussies to write Miles as his own individual character.

>>84428990
Reread the paragraph. WASN'T. And that is the point. If you actually read the comic that guy who was complaining didn't get hit by anything that would put him in a critical condition. Hence the Boo-Hoo from Miles. he was a desk nerd that got ruffled. Catching Black Cat was more of an issue at that point.

>>84428910
Cool. That response says it all.
>>
>>84428833
He doesn't have to touch the person because he can arc the energy outside of his body if he has to. He showed that way back in the Spider-Men mini series. The venom blast seems to work like a virus in the way that it spreads.

But seriously thought tell me why you're really upset? Its not like Miles' hasn't had the Venom Blast for the past 5 years and its not like other heroes/characters don't have abilities specific to them.

He's no more bland than Peter or any other everyman type hero. I honestly find it hard to believe that many detractors have read any of the runs with Miles' because he seems to have plenty of personality to me. He's similar to Peter in the sense that they're both driven by a sense of responsibility, but Miles is less of a moral paragon than Peter which I think is an interesting change.

And as far as the complaints about the Venom Blast thing, it always seemed to me that that was just part of the character. Miles is shown to be less savvy as far as science and gadgets go than Peter but it's balanced out by his power and combat prowess. Peter is kind of like the Aang to Miles' Korra.
>>
>>84422990

>>84429843
>Peter
>Moral Paragon

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Holy shit dude
Peter's a walking overwhelming guilt-complex

He doesn't save people purely because he thinks it's the right thing to do, he saves people because his guilt would eat him alive if he didn't
>>
>>84429843
But that's why he's a good character. His morality/guilt problems off set his powers. It keeps things interesting because he lives by a standard he truly can't live up to. Miles is Chris Chan tiers of mary suing.

>He's just like Peter! But he has none of that emotional baggage.
>>
>>84430075
I just mean in the sense that in most comics Peter is more of a "No one left behind" kind of guy. When conflict arises Peter tends lean away from the pragmatic and do what is pure good, bar a few occasions. Not necessarily that his motivation is entirely sound.
>>
>>84430144
I'd disagree with that. Miles was motivated by guilt himself, Ultimate Peter's death and all. Miles is trying to live up to the Spider-man name and the title of Hero in general, similar to Peter trying to live up to his own expectations. It's a similar inner conflict but it's tailored to each characters unique experiences.
>>
>>84430202
But there lies the issue with 616 Miles. He doesn't have that conflict anymore because Peter's alive. The only place they can go with the character is to set him apart from Peter entirely.
>>
>>84430202
>Ultimate Peter's death and all.
new Miles was 'always part of 616-8'
Peter never died (without other replacements)
Miles has no reason to use Pete's secret identity in 616-8
>>
>>84430075
That's the thing, Miles doesn't feel guilt on the level that Peter does. He felt guilty about Peter's dying initially but the burden didn't lay on his mind very long.

Peter Parker's death was the last thing on his mind when he quit for a year and the same with when he eventually assumed the role of Spider-Man again.

Peter Parker's resurrection even further establishes that a guilt complex ultimately is not influencing Miles to be Spider-Man.
>>
>>84430284
But Miles retained his memories of the Ultimate universe. Just because Peter is alive doesn't mean what Miles learned about responsibility and his feelings of guilt have gone away. He still has to continue superheroing to keep things like Peter's death from happening.

And besides that, Miles has other struggles outside of Spider-guilt to provide conflict.
>>
Peters Guilt Levels (GL) are off the charts. Miles' are barely a blip on the radar.
>>
>>84430284
Miles is Spider-Man out of a reluctant sense of duty. He has the powers and abilities to protect the innocent. If he isn't Spider-Man, men with villainous intentions won't be held accountable.

And people like Bombshell, Cloak and Dagger, and Jessica Drew will not receive justice for the injustices that they have suffered. In the end he has no choice he has to act. At least for the time being that is.
>>
>>84430356
>Peter Parker's death was the last thing on his mind when he quit for a year
Are you it wasn't his mom being killed from him being Spider-Man?
>>
>>84422990
Something I've noticed about Miles is that he seems almost more outgoing outside of the suit than he does in it. He's an introvert but not shy. As Spider-man he's got more dry humor and sarastic quips as opposed to Peter's more outgoing and flamboyant humor. He's kind of reserved but still has outbursts when he's doing something he enjoys, such as the science fair during Ms. Marvel. He also seems to be more easily irritated than Peter and his moral compass doesn't seem as strong, but I find that kind of interesting.

As a hero, he wants to do what's best but that doesn't come as naturally to him as it does to Peter.
>>
It was, that's exactly my point.

Gwen Stacy tried her best to remind him of why it was that he became Spider-Man and why there should be a Spider-Man but Miles wouldn't hear it. It wasn't until Jessica Drew made him aware of the ways of the world and how his not being active as Spider-Man effects it, that he decided that it was his duty to be spider-man. That it was his duty to protect not only his family and friends but the innocent as well.

Peter by creation was full of contradictions since creation
Lee wanted him to be the liberal hero the youth looks up too
Ditko wanted him to be the objectivist who never hesitates to act
there are multiple examples on what makes Peter interesting beyond that but Miles was made to just be the black Spider-Man created by a white jewish guy
he's not a character, he's token

>there are no bad characters, just bad writers
I'm gonna have to agree.

It seems like the general consensus here is that Miles has the potential to be a good character (and no, I do not mean it in same regards as the waifu fags who get pissy about how their chosen fapbait didn't get enough screen time) but is ultimately held back by Bendis constantly dropping the ball with his writing. Others have been able to give us a much more enjoyable Miles as seen in the numerous pages already posted here. Even DAN SLOTT was capable of writing the kid better than the bald bastard. But because his utter refusal to do anything outside of the safe zone, Miles basically becomes a discount Peter Parker with none of the things that made him great.

If Miles was simply taken out of Bendis' hands, it would solve like a good 95% of the problems most people have with him. But since this is probably never going to happen, the character is stuck in this state until further notice.
>>
>>84427676
It's really more that unless an OC becomes wildly popular in their own right, enough to sustain a solo, there's no reason for anybody else to write them.
