Then ~15-20 years later I "aquire" #1-current and thought "hey I loved that shit long ago, I'll read it again" only to realize McFarlane is a shitty writer.

Here is another public domain character which fits the top of this thread, The Black Orchid. That is actually the name of two public domain characters from the golden age of comics, both of which were in stories that have passed into the public domain. Artist Gregori C. Giordano combined the two characters into one and then gave her a fresh look. This is easily my favorite character re-design ever, and it has never been used anywhere.
