How come the French comics and cartoons industry isn't as popular in the states as Japanese comics and cartoons? There are so many amazing works that people don't know about in America because it wasn't made by a jap.
>>
>>84403641
Because the French are lewd fuckers.

Come to think of it, forget America, why aren't French comics popular in Japan?

Most likely it has to do with the cultural exchange that occurred after WWII. Returning American soldiers and foreign investments by American companies saw pieces of Japan return with them. On top of that the influence of American culture on anime created a number of similarities that don't necessarily exist in French animation.

We used to get more Euro stuff in the US from what I can tell, before the comic bust of the 90's. Luckily, things seem to be picking up again, with people like Titan comics and Europecomics.com translating stuff. I hope they keep at it, there's a lot of good stuff over there I'd love to see translated.
>>
I don't think anyone produces half the amount of content a year as Japan.

But the French stuff is soo...routine. The episodes of their shows really blend together a lot when the same characters do the same thing in the same situations every single episode without fail. It's like there is some kind of checklist for the series sin general that each episode has to follow.

But also France has not produced as much really high quality, award winning stuff that really attracts loads of international attention and gets everyone into nearly anything that comes out of the country which includes the lesser quality stuff.

>>84403641
Comics and manga in general are made in different way. A french comic can take a lot of time for one book to be made, while manga and burger comics can be put out every week or month. I'm generalizing, but I think that counts somewhere in the equation.
Also, Japs have somehow introduced anime and manga everywhere while not showing that big of an interest for people outside their country, Americans have a thing for inserting their cultural products everywhere, and I guess in France we don't have that.
In term of comics again, we have (had ?) big shots like Tintin, Astérix, guy like Moebius... but maybe we don't make the actual effort to publish more of our stuff overseas, or there's not enough interest in what our artists and authors produce maybe ?

And please, we don't just have lewd things, just different standards and mentalities cause we're in Europe.
>>
>>84404434
>Because jap lewd was shaped by US-imposed lewdness laws

It's not though, and it's hilarious that people STILL think that's the case. The wierd japanese laws were made during the time of Imperial Japan, before we even got involved.

Basically, anime is animated with 24 drawn frames per second of animation, that has always been the standard. But here's the thing, drawing 24 UNIQUE frames is a complete bitch and very expensive. 1s means that every single one of those 24 frames is individually drawn, which means the animation will be of much higher quality and a lot smoother.

So what most anime do to save costs/time is animate in 2s. Which means you make a unique frame, then you copy that unique frame onto the next one before making another unique frame. It's still 24 fps, but there's only 12 actually unique frames in it. But even 2s is very expensive, only Studio Ghibli tends to do their movies in 2s. Tv anime does their animation in 3s if not 4s.

For a good example, here's the first opening to G Gundam, remastered for the blu-ray. It's notable because the entire opening is done in 1s, which makes its high quality clear

truth hurts I see. But the CGI is garbage and ugly. They have no idea how to balance big eyes in 3d faces, and the body joints are just flods because the budget didn't allow muscles with mass and bones under the skin.
The design itself is garrish which doesn't mix with the poor boring low poly copy pasted backgrounds, or even the 5 bystander models they have.
It's hard to believe those people made cartoons before at any level.

Lemme tell ya something, the french culture industry is not fair, and generally, the most popular french comics are lame. It's more about european comics not making it to the US.
Try finding these (they're more for adults because of the themes)

Comès - Silence
the work of Loisel (Peter Pan and La quête de l'oiseau du temps especially)
the work of Bourgeon (Les passagers du vent; Les compagnons du crépuscule; Le cycle de Cyann)
Le grand pouvoir du Chninkel - Jean Van Hamme / Rosinski
Blacksad is pretty good too it had a huge success over the years especially because of the quality of the drawings

One of the reasons manga became so popular around the world is how easy it is to read. French comics tend to be the opposite - they're really wordy, can be hard to get into if you don't have the patience, and often not all that interesting even though the art is amazing.
Still, I wish more were translated, so much cool looking sci-fi stuff.

Hes right that is why there is a good deal of one season anime. Its too risky to make anime. You are not likely to make your money back. One of the tricks is to make a season of a manga adapted to the screen. Then dont end the story so people go looking for the manga to get the story.

It's how any franchise works, grandpa. It's not a theory. Pixar creates those shitty vehicle movies because those toys sell like cocaine.

I think one reason why Japanese animation made a presence in the US and French didn't was because in olden days, it was easier to broadcast anime in the US due to Japan having the same television standard. France used PAL (well, really SECAM) which meant that anything had to be reformatted.

You could also import Japanese VHS tapes here and play them while you couldn't do that with anything from Europe.

Sonic Boom is animated by French though.
>>
IDK, but French anything has never clicked with Americans for some reason. Even their cars were a flop while Japwagons were taking over US roads by the 70s.
>>
>>84416869
Now of course we always broadcast tons of British programming here, but you didn't need to redub the language. Continental European TV shows had the double whammy of both requiring an English dub and also being reconverted for NTSC format.
>>

indeed
>>
>>84416869
the problem is the false starting point of your argument, the belief japanese anime haven't been rotting in dead slots like Toonami for a decade while French animation was there on real channels for more than 30. You just don't want to learn and use assumptions and "it would be great if" kind of logic.
>>
>>84416969
So take your pick:

Japan=different language, same TV standard
Britain/Australia=same language, different TV standard
Continental Europe=different language, different TV standard

>It's how any franchise works, grandpa
including French cartoons. you created a "japan is like that and French cartoons aren't based on myth, beliefs and other self validated "wow I'm so clever mom look at me" garbage. nothing works in that argument, educate yourself. Anime has way more original animation without toys than French cartoons. The manga supposedly "promoted" (wrong logic but not surprising from ignorant simpletons) actually flops all the time. You have no weight to prove your point. At all. Except your mom nodding at you to make you shut up.

A huge part of it is rights-mongering, right show, wrong time moments that lead to or caused by lack of interest and other shit-happens affairs.

Totally Spies and the other Marathon made garbage were easy to port over, whereas Wakfu's rights were tangled up for years, even though that show would've had a huge market around the time WoW/MMORPGs were getting big had they played their cards right.

Marvel and the dreaded Tokyo Pop attempted to bring over french comics that had utterly fantastic art (Samurai, Luuna, Sky Doll) and stories, yet none of them had a huge impact. Tokyo Pop is shit and buried the french stuff with the over saturated market they flooded, so that explains that, but the Marvel stuff wasn't even advertised to able to reach an audience.

I am just hazarding a guess, but this speaks to me that it's harder for some reason to find a market as a general rule, or it is easier to port over manga and anime than it is stuff from Europe.

There is other indication like fansub and fan translation, a lot of manga and anime are fansubed/translated, you can't say the same thing about french comics and cartoons.

The problem there is more that French cars have some very strange design conventions most of the world doesn't use and Americans didn't quite know what to make of them.

Tell me when your medium has dumbass plebs paying ten dollars a month to stream shit they could just torrent in better quality.

It does seem that French culture did not have as big of an influence on the US as a lot of other countries, one reason possibly being that we didn't get many French immigrants unlike the gazillions of Irish, Italians, Jews, and Germans.

>>84416441
Well that is true and good reason not to take anime seriosly like some people too.
Anime is not art and never will be.

Every French cartoon I've seen is just a subpar anime.
