The simplest explanation is that he's a strictly "meat and potatoes" kind of guy.
I kinda remember an ep where he beat Popeye down while he was about to eat some spinach, took Popeye's can, ate half, and threw it down cuz it tasted bad and it didn't do anything for him. Then he walked a little bit away to try to force Olive to kiss him. Then Popeye ate the rest of the dropped can (by sucking it into his fucking PIPE!!), got all pumped while lying down, tapped Bluto on the shoulder, then handed him an asswhipping starting off with a piping hot sucker-punch.
