I always find characters with no real origin or background to speak of intriguing. Mostly because one will speculate on who they are and how they came to be. (One of the prevailing theories on Nolanverse Joker is that he was an ex soldier suffering fro PTSD)
Problem arises when after years of having some mystery to them, someone gets the bright idea to give them a back story and 9 times out of 10 they become less interesting because of it. (Looking at you Logan oh i'm sorry "james", also The Major)
