The suggested routes for reading I've seen have been starting at 1, 160, or 252.
Starting at 1, you obviously get the whole shebang good and bad. A guide posted a lot awhile back suggested skipping to 160 around issue 50/when you start to dislike it and using a wiki to help when you don't know something (a lot of bullshit gets written off, but the writer does like continuity, so you will miss some things).
The book rebooted at 252 erasing majority of the comic only cast with only the cartoon casts and a couple exceptions surviving and is now in worldbuilding mode, which truthfully, has been really boring lately, but it's the easiest to get into.
There's a reading guide that lists all the comics in the order you are supposed to read them, but I don't have it on me. It's been posted in past threads, though or you could ask /sthg/ if no one here has it.

You should probably read it parallel with the consistently-good Sonic Universe, though I can't remember where the reboot point of that is. Best arcs: Spark of Life and Eggman's Dozen.

Yeah, they've changed them twice since Iron Dominion (I think because I'm not sure when Kaminski started editing). Most recent one is Lovallo, who's decent, but he made the boneheaded decision of cutting the main book in half so both the main story and backup have 10 pages each. Sonic 3 takes place right after Sonic 2 with the game beginning with Sonic having all the emeralds from Sonic 2 and Eggman still using the Death Egg. Slapping CD inbetween them wouldn't make sense.
You could also consider the robot Sonics in Sonic 2 and 3 to be prototypes for what becomes Metal Sonic which would make placing CD after Sonic 3 feel more natural.
It's not a mandate or an official word. It's just fucking logic because no other option makes sense.

It's seriously really easy to get into the comics. There was a total fresh reboot 2 or so years ago. You can jump right in there, it's pretty good , it relates more to the games.
There are a lot of good arcs before the reboot, I like pre-reboot better. I got an app on my phone that I could browse and buy all the issues, so for the pre-reboot stuff I just looked for arcs that looked cool and started at the beginning of the arc. I really enjoyed just picking it up like that, you don't need to know a whole lot of previous continuity, but if you're curious about something, google what issue it happened in and find the beginning of that arc

That's not the only thing he did to push trades. Remember when all the characters got memories from the pre-reboot for a few issues? That was him. He forced that so he could sell pre-reboot trades and fool people into thinking it wasn't a full reboot. The combination of the 4 issue format in the main book under him combined with Lovallo's new format has made the pacing of the reboot awkward as fuck. It goes from spending too long in places pre-WU to speeding through everything afterwards
