debbie does dallas, the green door, some of the first pornos had just debuted. Ermergerd porno was one of the most talked about subjects in pop culture. Thats my guess.

Being a John Byrne fan is hell. I just want to be able to appreciate his work without having to talk about the man himself, but it's just not possible.

It's like a few years back when my friend finally got me to watch Chinatown with him. I was really enjoying the film and we'd just gotten to the part where Jack Nicholson gets his nose sliced open by Roman Polanski. My friend leans over and goes, "That guy with the knife's the director. Y'know, he raped a kid?"

Byrne didn't like Kirby. He wrote this story as sort of a Fuck You to him, since Big Barda was based on his wife.

Byrne wrote some great stories but Byrne is a small petty man.
>>
>>84346866
>Why did John Byrne do this?

Because like 99% of people in the comic industry he has mental issues only he has no problem letting them be openly seen in his work
>>
>>84347841
It's more complex than that. Of course he likes Kirby, he just thinks he can one-up him at everything he created.

Reminder that John Byrne was a petty asshole who had Cyclops leave his wife and child because he hated Claremont.

There was also the comic he wrote where She-Hulk was forced to strip butt naked in a room full of men and paraded around SHIELD nude, in front of her boyfriend.

>>84347431
I try separating creator from creation, Woody Allen is a child rapist too but I still love some of his works. John Lennon beat his wife and his music is still enjoyable. It's the same with Byrne too, he's an awful human being but I still love some of his work.

He didn't beat Yoko Ono enough.
>>
>>84347949

>>
>>84351557

>>
>>84347039
And to think, writers keep trying to hook them up.
>>
>>84349166
Marvel Graphic Novel #18. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agent didn't even get into trouble, because he had connections. Then he was never seen again in any comic ever. My personal headcanon says that he was killed by Fury during the "Nick Fury vs S.H.I.E.L.D." miniseries.
>>
>>84351803
X-Mansion got thrashed during Kitty's slumber party and Logan was supposed to be babysitting. Everyone else just got home.
>>
So I'm a superman fan, is Byrne's work worth checking out?
>>
>>84349058
>>84349166
That wasn't him as far as I know. That was editorial demanding Cyclops join X-factor so that the entire 05 would be back together for the book.
>>
>>84347851
>only he has no problem letting them be openly seen in his work
Or at his forum. Where all his little sycophants and yes-men can kneel before him each day and suck him off.
>>
>>84349058
In the issue from OPs post its heavily implied that the bad guy in the story, Sleaze(lol), raped Barda multiple times and had her perform in solo masturbation videos before trying to hook her up with Superman.

Byrne should honestly be on a watch list of some type.
>>
>>84351458
He didn't though. Mister Miracle broke in at the last minute and stopped it.
>>
>>84352817
>Barda's Solo Masturbation videos

John Byrne is the first example of ARTISTS SHOULD NOT TRY TO BE WRITERS and the industry would have done well to never let another artist try to write.

Fuck you, Byrne's Superman run is one of the best, if not THE best Superman run in the history of the character. It wasn't perfect by any means but it's a classic.

Your stupid comment is also saying Frank Miller's run on Daredevil was shit too, btw.

No, this is how it went

Kurt Busiek, at the time an intern working on one of the fanzines, shared his idea for how to bring Jean back with Roger Stern. Stern liked it and told it to Byrne and Layton. Then the three of them brought the idea to Shooter who approved.

Before Jean was going to come back X-Factor was going to be a team with Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Ice Man, and Dazzler
>>
>>84353702
Not the same anon, but no, it isn't. It's only liked by people for whom Byrne's Superman was their first Superman. He destroyed Superman mythos and turned it into a soap opera. His superman was one of the biggest self inserts of all time.

Not him, but Byrne's era superman was the superman who had the least amount of the things that people always hate on the character for having. He had more personality, was more vulnerable, and had a strong supporting cast. Post crisis metropolis was the best that setting has ever been.
>>
>>84354104
He was a New God as well. He had some sort of mind control powers.
>>
>>84353702

>>
>>84352247
I'm a big silver age Supes fan and I like it well enough. Currently readin through volume 5 of the Man of Steel trades. Avoid the first issue though. Byrne had an autistic need to explain everything about Superman (like why his boots are red) and it just comes off like fan fiction. It gets better with issue 2 once he's already Superman and all his origin shit is out of the way. Byrne's version of Luthor is also probably the best I've ever read outside of Morrrison.
>>
>>84354516
Ah that explains it then
>>
>>84354664
Oh and also if you're thinking of going through the trades be aware that they also decided to reprint Marv Wolfman's run alongside Byrne's and it's atrocious. I've started skipping his issues altogether which means I'm done with them in about a half hour.
>>

>>
>>84354487
>Byrne's era superman was the superman who had the least amount of the things that people always hate on the character for having.

Yeah, but fuck those people anyway.

I think Byrne and Wolfman's reboot was very much needed and the introductions of Real Clark, more grounded Superman, businessman Luthor and a toughened up Lois were absolutely vital, but I do think it's more a solid foundation than it is a particularly great era in of itself. It's really about how others have built upon it, for better or worse. It's got some great moments though, the second issue of MoS is probably one of my favorite single issues of Superman.

Emil Hamilton and Gangbuster can fuck off forever though.
>>
>>84359260
>Emil Hamilton and Gangbuster can fuck off forever though
That subplot about Perry White's son leading a life of crime can also get fucked. So boring.
>>
>>84352247
Honestly? You can hardly call yourself a Superman fan if you haven't read it. It defined the character for decades after. It's on par with Batman Year One.

Give it a read, anon. I've been meaning to post it.
>>
>>84354487
And likewise he completely changed and marvelized Superman. The writers DC chose were the wrong people to reinvent superman. He shouldve been handed to a Brit or someone like Gerber. Moore and later Morrison perfectly wrote and reinvented Superman later by not choosing to shy away from cheesy concepts and still writing a nuanced character.
