What perfect timing! JMD posted this today

http://www.jmdematteis.com/2016/07/in-praise-of-giffen.html

>It still amazes me that Keith and I have been working together this long—almost thirty years, on and off. Well, maybe it’s not so surprising: Despite the fact that Keith desperately wants people to think that he’s surly and cynical, Earth’s Biggest Malcontent, he’s actually an incredibly nice guy.

>"Unworthy Thor," by Jason Aaron and Olivier Coipel, arrives in October.

>"I wanted something big to come out of 'Thors' that would affect our characters going forward, so that turned out to be a hammer. This is just a great, great beast of metal," Aaron told io9 of the Ultimate Thor's weapon's appearance in "Unworthy Thor." "So to have that somehow fly through the events of Secret Wars and land in the normal Marvel Universe, which we saw at the end of 'Thors,' at Old Asgard— of course it went back to Old Asgard, but the old Asgard, nobody lives there. So, it’s just been sitting there, all this time."

>Infamous Iron Man #1, Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme #1, and Solo #1 are the new names for three posters originally solicited by Marvel to retailers with their September products. They were previously solicited simply as a group of four generic (identified as A through D) "Marvel NOW!" posters, the fourth of which was also revealed today as the Champions #1 by [Humberto] Ramos poster.

>The Infamous Iron Man #1 poster is by International Iron Man artist Alex Maleev

>The Doctor Strange and Sorcerers Supreme #1 poster is by Batgirl artist Rafael Albuquerque.

>The Solo #1 poster is by All-New X-Men artist Paco Diaz.

>Purely on a speculative basis, if Infamous Iron Man is indeed a series joining the relauching Invincible Iron Man title, given the image above revealed by the publisher last week, Victor Von Doom seems as good a candidate as any to star.

>The Doctor Strange and Sorcerers Supreme could very well feature the magic-based group of characters such as Shaman, Scarlet Witch, and Doctor Voodoo which have been appearing regularly in Doctor Strange and its "Last Days of Magic" arc.

>I didn't bother to read JL: R, how was it?
Meh. At first the opening with Lois talking Clark into reaching out to the League seems nice until you realize that, well, this is Clark fucking Kent, and he shouldn't have to be talked into saving people. The story is otherwise unremarkable aside from the aforementioned "references".

The art was hilariously bad though. Hitch cannot draw anyone, especially Diana, without a serious derp face.

I can't quite put into words why this works so well, but it does. Classic Hal. He didn't even bother buttoning up. I don't quite remember, was this during his "basically homeless" phase? When pretty much everyone from Alfred to Superman refused to let him crash at their place, even Ollie?
>>

>Like, can you even IMAGINE a social worker making comments like that "take me home" bit?
I have some awareness of legal cases against social workers, so unfortunately yes.
>>
>>84337596
Priest did a novelized version of that scene where Hal wasn't actually drunk, but he smelled like booze because he'd been in a bar and the OTHER people in the car had all been drinking but he crashed anyway because reasons and the cops just assumed he was drunk too

which is really convoluted and I think SBP's reality punch getting rid of the drunk driving makes about as much sense
>>
>>84337551
>POLL: Is Guy actually good at the sex, or not
Hell no. He's only concerned about pleasing himself during coitus, with no regard for if his partner's enjoying themselves.

>>
>>84338062
See, that's the weird thing. As the "not for me" Flintstones guy, that's what I thought worked about the book.

If you wanna argue "this is a weird fucking take for Flintstones and i'm not sure who this book is for", that's an argument you can make.

I mean, did the previews and media blitz - what there was of it - do much to sell Flintstones as the existential shit?

For me the most important thing about the Mad Men comparison is making it clear that we're not meant to simplistically cheer on the characters uncritically, which a bunch of readers (no one in this thread) completely missed the boat on, so it's still a needed reminder.
>>
>>84338203
I certainly see that "the bird god they worship works perfectly as a record needle" comment in a different light having read the #1.
>>
>>84338203
Not really, although the Bleeding Cool review that came out way in advance did sell that line, and the most recent interviews have as well.

The Conner promo stuff was really misleading in retrospect, but it also might have mutated out from under them, those things happen.

It's kind of like if people called Mad Men "like the Sopranos".

sheeit this is bringing back some memories

I have an old floppy in storage somewhere from this run. Great time capsule. That godawful PG costume, her weird allergy to soda...I think she was still considered an Atlantean at that point? Fuckin' Sonar had a costume that made him basically Orange Magneto, somehow became premier of the USSR using nuclear launch codes and an army of Rocket Reds and brainwashed JSA members, and also took Sue Dibny as his trophy wife(!). Hal had amnesia and yet still managed to bang Power Girl (absolute sluts, the both of them).

Found the cover. I maintain that Hal's greying temples look was his absolute best, and Guy's blue leather jacket and cowboy boots was his definite worst. Yes, I'm counting Gal Gardner and Warrior.

Also, anyone else consider Gerard Jones to be vastly underrated? He never really had any bad shit in his output, and he was a reliable workhorse. He did the best he could with the short notice and tiny timeframe he was given for Emerald Twilight, and he was always readable without sinking to the level of mediocrity of peers like Jurgens. Whatever happened to the guy?

I have so many back issues from more obscure DC stuff from when I was a kid, I really gotta dig through my stash in storage. They're all probably in mediocre condition and not worth any money, but there's a potential for a potent nostalgia buzz.

The specific focuses on corporate culture and the like and the recentness of Mad Men is what does it. Pick a different similar media if it suits you, people tend to go what's fresh in one's mind, not references that may be out of date or not known to others.
>>
>>84338282

they were trapped under rubble and under assault while they did it, too! that's very dedicated

I really enjoyed Jones' GL run and it's a shame that eventually he had so many issues with his editor that he quit/got fired at the very last minute and they brought Marz on instead

Hell, they'd solicited an issue or two of Jones' Emerald Twilight already! that obviously changed

His original plans for Emerald Twilight sounded like less of a slap in the face than what Marz ended up doing

I kinda felt the same way when I was posting the great great Denny O'Neill Question run, but by the end of it I realized that a lot of people use the archives to check out storytimes, so it basically comes down to luck. Sometimes you post an entire comic without so much as a bump, sometimes you get a solid lil crew with decent commentary, sometimes shitposters try to piss in your cornflakes. Fuckin' way she goes boys.

If you have the time, it's worth doing, if for no other reason than keeping some actual comics in the /co/ catalog and bumping off a few of the constant creepy/cringey threads about kids cartoons that give this board a bad rep

Of course, sometimes truly awful comics attract the most readers and comments. The most fun I've had on this board was posting Mark Millar's batshit Ultimate Comics: Avengers when I was sick as hell and messed up on nyquil
