The biggest problem with Slim was the studio execs were wishy washy.
The first version was a pure villain who was explicitly selling the cows to be slaughtered for black market beef. The execs said, no, you can't do that, we have marketing deals with McDonalds in place.
So they decided to go full comedy. Slim is building an army of cows to storm the whitehouse and become president. Then execs said he has no threatening 9resence.

"In the dark of the night" is a fine song, nothing wrong with it. But holy fuck is the accompanying animation awful. The decrepit old man will not sit the fuck down, there's not a single moment where he and his million fucking bugs are not jumping and swinging their arms and kicking and spazzing out and going into frothing twitching epileptic fits. Movement is great and all, especially in a musical number, but it goes way the fuck overboard to the point of parody. I mean, even when he's putting on a wig and showing off his magic disguise he's still doing a little bounce, he just won't stop for even a fucking second.

This song is a remnant from when the movie was going to be a lot more lighthearted. Hotep and Hoy were gonna be like Vegas magicians basically, the whole shebang. When Spielberg and others came in and pushed the movie to be more serious, instead of re-writing the song they just re-orchestrated it.the Jews didn't want to pay Stephen Schwartz any more. I'm sure he understood.
I found it cringeworthy when I first saw it, but it's really grown on me. It's probably just because the rest of the film is so good I forgive it.
