It's a gruesome death, but a good one. I like how set up this was actually: it's a plausible way for Elan to sacrifice himself for their escape without him suddenly becoming super competent, and it emphasises Toma's message that individual - and small, even - heroism is important. Plus we get an appropriately horrifying scene to show off Captain Hetr and General Bell (still lol at Hetr's name).

The construction of these pages is fucking lit. That regulated first panel, but with the slant and bleedover to the crying child and "what of VALUE", stuff starting to slant more and that division with Elka's hand and Elan's face, and then all the panels fucking clashing together like crazy in the fight, and in the last you can actually sort of read each panel as how Elan's dying perspective diminishes in focus - what he's trying to pay attention to - and the fadeout the white and just the back of the wright. Shit like this reminds me why I love this comic so much.

It's interesting to see the constable's reaction here. The beginning of Masks has her and her colleague joking about the deaths of the townsfolk sent off to war and the lack of quality of those being sent off now. But in the end, she goes to stop Hetr from attacking the town. It's a nice contrast in her character, especially a minor side antagonist character.

A fetish she may have, but I don't think that's what's happening here. One of the things about this comic is that death isn't pretty. Fighting often isn't too pretty either, despite people like Duane and Matty having lofty ideals about duels and what not.
In another story, Elan would make his last remark, and be shown to be holding off some enemies as the heroes escaped. We might see him run through with a sword, cough up a bit of blood, and die with a smile all glorious-like, if at all. In Unsounded, his torso is caved in, and he dies with an agonized look on his face and tears in his eyes as he tries to reach his badge. Only for his hand to be stomped on and his body erased from existence (the one bit of his death we don't actually see on the page). This is the kind of universe where death can be very agonizing and horrific in a lot of ways.
Other stories due this sort of thing too.Attack on Titanfrequently has people die in "glorious" stands or attacks, only for their last moments to be full of pants wetting fear, pain, and gruesomeness. Many regretting that they tried to do the heroic thing at all. No one, not even the heroes, really gets to die in a good looking way.
Look up the death dialog for Red Orchestra Rising Storm death sounds, if you have the stomach for it, for a similar thing done with sound. The dialog varies between fear, denial, petty bargaining, bitter rage, and delusion. Gore and ugliness can be a bit edgy, but in the right hands it makes death something with more impact than a sanitized sacrifice.

This is complicated by the fact that we overhear some of the assassins say "you can't do that to a cleric!" implying a degree of respect to his station, unlikely for Geffendur. Even more so, we learned recently that Duane ended up away from Bastion because the assassin's actually attacked Bastion once they realized he was fucking with Duane's remains. They may have realized he was turning him into a plod, something the Geffendur are fine with but Ssaelits are incredibly against.
It seems likely the assassins were Ssaelit and lied even under brutal torture. Something that may have been easier because they would be telling the torturers exactly what they wanted and expected to hear.

I forgot the darker skinned Aldish are still visibly distinct from the Crescians. And Duane even calls the first one he catches a "Cresce person," in an oddly clunky sentence.
That said, not all of them were Crescian, notably the mysterious masked knife wielder as well as at least one other we see on the right side of the second panel of pic related, and Ssaelism isn't an exclusively Aldish religion. Alderode is just the only place it isn't persecuted. It is still a complication, though, which makes the whole thing murkier. It's pretty implicit Duane's assassination wasn't a straight forward move by Cresce. However, the assassins are a majority Crescian, and it seems odd that so many would willingly volunteer for a suicide mission and brutal torture.
Maybe then the situation was the leaders were Ssaelit and Aldish, while the rest were Crescians who thought this was a hit by their government and they were scapegoated. Otherwise it seems odd the Crescians would give much of a rat's ass about defiling a Ssaelit cleric's corpse. Perhaps what Bastion appeared to be doing was just that objectionable. The "you can't so that to a Cleric" still feels like there has to be an Aldish in there somewhere. We know the silver is a plot by Aldish and Geffendur conspirators and Bastion has been wrapped up in it. Perhaps they were also behind Duane's initial assassination. Though again, Bastion had trouble with them in the past.

Yeah, I like SSSS, but I can see why it's turning people off. It's the slowest of slow burns and there's nothing particularly memorable about the character dialog we're getting either. As I was thinking about it, I can recall a number of Unsounded lines right of the top of my head, from jokes to dramatic and emotional lines. Part of it may just be due to a higher investment in Unsounded, but I think that is itself driven by the good character lines. Cope's interest in dense literature and media with a bigger focus on character relationships and interaction has really paid off. Even short stories she writes up to answer a question on tumblr are good reads. Getting into stuff like that only helps with creating a work, no matter its level. Even Paranatural has some great lines I can easily recall. Far more on the joking end, and of a very different flavor than Unsounded, but solid foundations of character lines really make a comic.
That said, I think I prefer SSSS to a comic with the opposite problem right now, Girl Genius. Girl Genius has way too much shit going on at once and it pretty much never pays off. The pacing is atrocious, despite things constantly happening. Right now they've just found an expert on time nonsense to help fix their castle town so they can fight the supervillain, only for the immortal, undead super king everyone is constantly jizzing over to come barging back into the story. As soon as it happened, what should've been an "oh shit" moment was instead an "oh god, here we go again." The plot's going to be derailed with nothing to show for it, despite having every reason to actually be interesting.
Both will probably benefit from binge reads in the future, but SSSS is less offensive in the moment.

Well lets think about it.
I'd say that "The Reluctant Escort" could be stretched into a single episode probably, assuming more time is being spent on that one page war flashback than just an instant. Give a little more context to what Duane is feeling than is in the comic.
"Red Berry Boys could probably work as a 23 minute episode with a little compression, but I can't really see it working as 2 episodes, so that's another one. Same with "A Miserable Drizzle"
Combined, I'd say "Convergence" and "The Darkening Sky" could probably make 3 episodes, bleeding events from one into the other.
"A Good Night for Crazy" is easily 2 episodes.
"Phantom Pain" Is an probably 3 episodes. I can't figure out where the breaks would go, but there's a LOT in that chapter.
"Masks" Could probably be like, 1 and a half episodes, in terms of content, but again, it's hard to see how to actually break it up, so probably compressing it down to 1.
"Deadly Nevergreen 1" could probably be 2 episodes, especially with the musical number and pushing in some of Masks maybe.
"Deadly Nevergreen 2",... Well that's a big chapter
Like, I can easily see it being a 4 part season finale.
So in my estimation, where on Episode 19 right now, and S2E01.
