I like the notion that unlike other character's archenemies, there's no immediate discernible reason why he hates Aquaman. Like, some shit went down one day, a lot of shit happened in the crossfire, maybe some casualties happened because of that, like Aquaman's dad or Black Manta's dad (or not, it should be ambiguous), and no one even really knows who started it. They've been at each others' throats ever since. Or that it's just kept mysterious period. No one really knows why this dude just hates the fuck out of Aquaman and needs to fuck with him all the time.
I never did like how Black Manta was pissed because Aquaman killed his father in Johns' run. That just takes away a lot of the mystique from the character and their tension. Plus it was kind of a boring, typical motivation.

The way different characters react to largely the same motivation is the way characters are differentiated. The fact that Black Manta has gone absolutely mental over Aquaman and made it his sole mission in life to fuck with him makes him a pretty standout villain. Same for Thawne.
Because they've reacted in this way, you get a feel for the kind of person they are. When someone with the same motivation acts differently, you get the same understanding of them as a different person. Black Manta and Thawne have familiar motivations, but the way they're shown to react to them sets them apart. Afterall, what kind of whacko acts like they do because of the things that spawned them?
Subtle differences in the motivations themselves matter too. Spider-Man and Batman has, largely, the same motivations. Their heroic careers begun by the tragedy of a their parents dying. But Spider-Man personally blames himself, as he let the criminal who killed Uncle Ben go, while Batman's parents were killed by a random criminal. Spider-Man is burdened by responsibility, while Batman is driven by trauma. They were also different ages when this shit went down, which logically results in different reactions.
All this to say, HOW a character reactions to a motivating incident is the foundation of how you show characters off in a story.

Like other anons have said, it's quite likely it's not about his father anymore and that it probably never was. Black Manta is just a hateful man in the more literal sense of the term, and he's latched onto Aquaman as the fixation of his anger. Look at how he reacts when he finds out Aquaman is a live again. Immediately reverts and just fucking kills everyone around him. He's like some kind of black, reversed Joker. Only instead of amusing jokes about love, it's outright, unending hate.
It goes back to whole different reactions to the same motivation. Black Manta might have his father's death as a trigger, but given how he's been written pretty much everywhere and the constant fakeouts of a "real" motivation, it's clear that the "trigger" isn't the same as it is with, say, Batman's parents being killed. Sometimes people are bastards for no particular reason, and they'll latch onto anything as a seed to begin just fucking someone over to satisfy themselves.

Heres my question: Why isn't black manta as popular as the joker? They are similar in so many ways:

It's because the character hasn't had much exposure. Aquaman still isn't really all that popular with normies thanks to Superfriends and since Black Manta is intrinsically linked to him, he hasn't had much chance to shine. It's not like there's been any Aquaman cartoon show or long running tv show for Black Manta to be featured prominently. Even in JLU they couldn't actually use Black Manta because of the embargo from the Aquaman pilot, so they had to go with a serial numbers filed copy, "Devil Ray," for one episode. I think Young Justice is the only cartoon outside of Superfriends, the old Aquaman cartoon, and some of the DC original animated movies that actually has him as a main character, being menacing.
I'm hoping the movie finally changes all of that though.

Orm was great. He's not even anything like Zod since unlike him, he actually loves and respects Aquaman. That's one thing I really liked about him in Throne of Atlantis. He legitimately cares about Arthur.

Besides that, his aesthetic as a character is so good. It's his helmet. It makes for such a unique shape and outline. In regards to my personal taste alone, I adore submarines and deep sea based stories, so Black Manta and his henchmen are awesome to me stylistically.

As far as a legacy character/sidekick for Black Manta goes, I'd love for DC to give him a female partner to work with. I think its because of my fetish for female action characters who get their hands dirty, especially villainous ones.

Agreed. The Black Best Friend of the MC, just to prove the MC isn't a racist, while trying to sanitize his BBF as the moral uptight one for a black audience, has flaws of its own. I really think writers need to remove this mindset that minorities and females have to be moral models for the people their representing. They should just be normal characters who only represent themselves. Otherwise, you get characters like Rey from Star Wars.

they assume it mean rambo with tits, when really it means someone like jessica jones or whatever. a female character with strong character traits, with flaws, with purpose.

I know it's basically a buzzword by now, but she has a lot of mary sue traits. She has barely if any flaws or shortcomings and does things that should by all means not be within her abilities. Like fighting off a sith lord with a lightsaber considering she never had any training with it, for example.

It's what ISN'T wrong with her. That's the problem: Rey is near perfect in Star Wars. Apparently, she's so attuned with the Force that she can utilize the Jedi Mind Trick, is immune to said Jedi feat by a more experienced Force user, and can apparently fight a Sith apprentice solo, all without any prior experience. Rey is a garbage character, and to add insult to jury, she's also a great pilot, is more aware of the technical aspects of the Millennium Falcon than the characters who have owned it for decades, and, most of all, Leia hugs her forHan's death when she should have been hugging Chewie. The chick barely knows Solo. Fuck her grief.

Finn was the best character in the movie by far and away.
Should've had a different female character altogether instead of "Luke Skywalker 2.0: Mary Sue Edition," and instead of focusing on her, have the first thirty minutes devote their time to Finn being in the FO.

Well see it doesn't need to grate on your nerves, but it IS bad storytelling. And being "flawed" doesn't mean she should suck at everything. She lived in a desert selling scrap and shit by herself. She had basis for being a good engineer, resourceful, capable of defending herself and attentive. You can do a lot of things with that, her background is enough to give her plenty of strengths.
But nothing in her background of overall story says she should be able to wield a fucking ancient warrior weapon against someone that had trained with one, not because it means that she was shit, but because it invalidates the other character allegedly not being shit.
She could have used some sort of machine or trickery on her part on the final battle, something that highlighted that while she wasn't good at EVERYTHING she was still able to take on everything because she's just that good in a way that doesn't make her look perfect
I mean, ultimately, it doesn't need to be overblown like some people do. But it is what it is, and what it is is bad storytelling

It's also only the first movie so far. Luke wasn't the greatest at everything in the first but he was hyper competent at a lot of things. He didn't start taking damage and getting humbled until the second one.

He didn't directly face off against the main villain either, though. The chase scene placed them against each other in an indirect way, and in a situation where Luke WAS hyper competent, it wasn't a lightsaber battle because he would have gotten fucking punked and we all know that.
I'm quite sure they dedicated at least a couple scenes to him looking like a fool and getting shot in the nuts by the training droids aboard the millenium falcon anyway
