>Mos/Bvs
>Tas

Honestly I have gown sympathetic to the Dark Knight Returns Superman, the animated films really fucked up leaving out his monologue while he was fighting the Russians.
Its clear that he has given up his free will to save his friends from being hunted down and harmed. Its a act of sacrifice, I can't stand when people dismiss him as a sellout.

I really liked the First Flight scene. IMO best superhero film moment, maybe even regular film moment, of all time. I liked how he basically looked like: "yeah, jumping is nice, but what if I pushed a little further?" Then how his first attempt didn't work, and he tried again. It was amazing.

I like it when Superman uses strategy. Is there a comic where he uses his cape for an attack? I was going to write a story where he does that, in order to combat the Incredibles cape meme.
>>
Who would make for an interesting villain in Man of Steel 2? I'd go for Brainiac, but maybe that's the easy choice?

It would be trippy to see Mr. Mxyzptlk, having them battle in the 5th dimension would be some crazy Cgi.

Superman's design was based on strong men from circuses that used to be prevalent during the Golden Age. But his design has many resemblances to certain depictions of Micheal Archangel. He is the humbler of all evil, he carries great power but always use in the name of a greater good. He fights the fights that we can't so that one day we can finally save ourselves.

Superman is willing to put many things in the line to protect humanity, even his own life. That's part of his charm and one of the reasons why the Superman=Jesus analogy just doesn't work. He isn't anywhere similar to Christ in theology.

The Sun (his source of power) is also a symbol of greater good and the Idea of Good. Which Plato relates to the inner greatness that all living beings should reach.

On another point, he is the son of a farmer and is very related to the natural process of life, which makes him part of Earth even if he himself comes from a very different place.

He is also a reporter trying to find truth anywhere he goes (even putting himslef at odds with the Planet when the paper became a source for tabloid celebrity gossip in the New52, which was a very interesting thing to do).

Finally, he can see your soul. This means that he values life even if he understands that death is imminent (which may explain why the guy is so against killing and yet doesn't preach about in Hitman). This is important, specially when you consider that he is also trying to represent justice.

Most of his problems comes from very human places. Such as self doubt, a love hate relationship with his kryptonian side and the struggle not to fail to his comrades or himself. And sure, a huge interplanetary fight that can be seen across galaxies are always an spectacle to watch.

Superman is one of the favorite character for fantasy writers for a good reason. He is fun to write, he isn't limited by many things other than the cosmos itself and it's own very humane nature.

well fact is he did sell out.

he criticizes batman for his "Holy war" but he became a government stooge so he could "save lives". he's become a tool of the US Govt, which is something Superman would never stand for. he's deceiving himself. he tries to rationalize it, but the fact is he had all the power in the world to say no and retire like everyone else, but he was just as selfish as he calls Bruce.

>"they let us live"

What's the government gonna do if he says no? kill him? the guy who is bulletproof, has laser vision, and as later shown- can tank a nuke?

Wtf.
The lives he can save are immeasurably more important then fucking spiting in the face of authority like a pathetic child.

No, see, ZACK SNYDER'S Superman is awful. Henry Cavill's Superman would actually be pretty damn good if they got someone else to direct him.
>>
If a Man of Steel standalone sequel is ever made and let's say Zack Snyder doesn't return, who'd you want to direct?
>>
Cavill and Affleck both kick ass and are being held back by their director.

I liked BvS, but all of it's flaws are clearly from Snyder. And I don't even hate the guy, but his current style does not suit them.

Keep him on for action scenes or whatever, but someone else has to take control of the story and character arcs.

He goes "How can you deal with all the screaming and hate and bad things in your senses"? and Clark sits the kid down and goes "By listening for the good parts; for mothers meeting their newborns for the first time, for a guy playing fetch with his dog, for people exchanging wedding vows." I like fun happy Superman as long as it doesn't go into camp much, hence TAS.(Plus the universe of tas had several of my favorite versions of various characters, Lex, Metallo, Braniac)

I just hate the writing. I feel like Clark/Superman in both MoS an BvS is barely there, and presented as a passive, reactive character.

So much of both films hinges on having a mental template of who superman is already supposed to be or how he behaves and I feel like both stories make critical omissions.

Have you checked out Up Up and Away? It's basically just Clark Kent: Ace Reporter for the first half. Superman is pretty prominent in the latter half though.
>>
There's a surprising lack of All-Star Superman. Why?
>>
>>84179736
>>84179659
These, plus Superman: Secret Identity, and JLA volume 3. Also you may appreciate All-Star even more if you read some other good Superman stories before it. Never start off with All-Star unless someone can only be convinced to read one comic. It's great fun on its own but it's even richer in tone if you're intimately familiar with the themes and mythos already, and feel like Superman's pal yourself.

Plus maybe a reread of Final Crisis and Multiversity when you're all done everything else.

He, E23, TAS, and Red Son are all too obvious to post more than a token number of times. There are a lot of people in the extended superfamily out there. Plus lost Kryptonians, Daxamites, time travel, and multiversal archetypes.

Personally I like movie Faora a lot for no other reason than her actor was a boss in the role. She owned the screentime despite every single line of dialogue she was given being cringeworthy and terrible. If the DCEU continues I'd like to see her back as a major villain leading a kryptonian army out of the phantom zone or whatever. Let her chew some scenery and then blow up some other cgi scenery.

True, true. But the latter half seems to always ignore the story thread of Kent. It's really weird how they tell about this reporter, which never seems to even be in the same place as Superman oddly enough, and never conclude his stories.

Can somebody please post the comic where Superman talks to a jumper?
I don't mean the single page where he says the doctor got held up.
As far as I can recall, it was maybe a dozen pages and started with Superman talking to a couple of cops. I also remember the jumper making Superman promise that if she still decided to jump, that he wouldn't save her.

I'd be grateful if somebody could dump please
>>
Superman listens to the vibration of souls, has sung gods to death, controlled inter-dimensional ships made out of frozen music, and dabbled with every instrument on a dozen worlds in his silver age days.

Have the Supermen of the multiverse ever formed a band together?

What kind of band would it be?

Statesman is a mixture of Captain America and Superman from the City of Heroes universe.

He was a broke orphan taken in by the family of the man who would later become Lord Recluse, the Doctor Doom analogue. They were adventurers and fought in World War 1 as mercenaries. Recluse got Mustard gassed something fierce, so the two of them sought some way to help him, ultimately finding an ancient well containing the power of the Greek Gods though I don't think they knew about all of that.

Statesman gained the powers of Zeus, lightning, super strength, flight. Recluse got the powers of Thanatos. They had a falling out and Statesman returned to America during the depression and age of prohibition. He took to fighting organized crime that the cops couldn't handle and became the poster boy for vigilantes turned heroes. Over time he trained new heroes and helped found a number of not Justice Leagues. He did not age, or aged really slowly, and continued to fight all kinds of monsters, alien and demonic invasions, alternate universes and super villain leagues while raising his demigod children to take up the mantle as well. He had a falling out with the US government during the McCarthyism days when they nuked Vietnam while he was still over there but was generally on agreeable terms with them in the decades past.

I was so pissed we didn't get to play out more stuff with the Praetorian universe.

I still love CoX because of it's amalgam of all kinds of cape comics and stories. I also think the first mutants being children conceived after the atom bombings in World War 2 was a nice touch rather than just having them solely evolved in time to be a thing while other heroes are coming to be.

Your reason for like Dark Knight Returns Superman are really weird.

Also, while talking about this I'm totally not including Dark Knight Strikes Again and the bottle-city of Kandor stuff because I don't think Miller had come up with that in 85.

Superman in Dark Knight Returns gave up being a hero because he didn't think that mankind wanted heroes. He talks about the Parents groups and shit as well as how "we can't show them giants walk the earth".

He works for the government because he still gets to be a bit of a hero without displeasing mankind.

Batman throws a fucking wrench into that when his own heroism saves Gotham while Superman's "government endorsed" heroism led to countless deaths.

It's why he gives Carrie Kelly the wink at the end. Superman has been given faith in heroes by Batman (like the reverse of Batman v Superman).

Also, Superman is unapologetically a Sun-God in Dark Knight Returns which is always my favorite portrayal of Superman.

To be fair or whatever, the other thread was 50/50 bait and honest well thought out posts about an elseworlds muslim Superman. It was really interesting at times but also a bit too /pol/. It could be considered off topic. Personally I'd rather it have stayed on principle, since we've had a bit too much censorship of muslim this or that recently in the west, and /co/ is a grownup board that can scoff away a little racism since this is fucking 4chan. The serious elseworlds posts were worth it. It was an acceptable tradeoff. Threads that might offend some muslim somewhere are being deleted. Threads about Superman are not.

But only Marvel is halal.
