This emulated classic era shounen uncomfortably close. You assume it's a kids' cartoon and suddenly all the disturbing violent shit happens. At least PPG had comedy to offset it.

I loved this show but holy crap was the second half kind of dark for a Disney cartoon.

It did have a setting, it was just poorly explained. For exampleMa and Pa Shanko are supposed to be Chiro's adoptive parents, but due to the minimal interaction they have with him, it's pretty much impossible to realize, unless you happen to know that. Had they bothered to establish it, their betrayal could have had more impact.The problem is that a lot is implied if you look hard enough, but it's downright cryptic bullshit.

I liked it, and I like it even more now in retrospective. It had an overarching plot and fairly good lore, and a lot of anime and manga influence. I should praise it because all the things Steven Universe tries to use as a gimmick, this show did them naturally.

basically there was a giant squid sort of thing, and when the characters looked at it's eye they became it's slave and looked creepy. all the monkeys ended up looking at it over the course of the episode and by the end of it, it was just the MC fighting them off until he ended up being forced to look at it. I can still remember him saying something like "I think I'll... Join you!". but then the squid thing died for some reason and everything was ok
