It started off as slice of life that was slightly less fugly and slightly more consistent than all of the other SOL webcomics of its era, then it ran for a decade straight. This explains half of its fans.
Then the other half of its fans came from that time tumblr bullied Jeph's stupid ass into stabbing his own hand. Having tasted blood, tumblr fucking loves it now.

Having read and semi-enjoyed it for a while myself, I think both the appeal and the frustration of the series lies in its consistent mediocrity. Nothing ever really develops or changes, which can be very comfy for a while, but it becomes infuriating as it keeps teasing you with the possibility of interesting drama or scifi and then dumping you back into the grind of boring Tumblr SOL.
Reading it is like watching late-period Simpsons or Family Guy. It's sort of comforting that its always there and never really changes, but it frustrates you because you know it could be so much more.
