Shiro doesn't break new ground, but he's one of the more rounded characters. He's kind to Pidge who is the series puppy, and niisan characters tend to be well liked in general. He's competent and gets cool fight scenes, but he's not invincible. He gets his ass handed to him a few times and he's not good enough to keep Voltron from getting battered around until they come up with the new power of the day. And he's got his share of goofy moments to show he's balanced and not annoyingly serious. His PTSD and Galran kidnapping also leave room for a lot of interesting character development beyond the cool niisan archetype. Plus implied angst for the fangirls to eat up.

I'm kind of hoping both? He's already had two instances of 'huh, that's weird', but the first one was kind of forgotten in the aftermath of getting the lions and the second one was witnessed by Keith alone. Also considering the presence of the saboteur I'd say it's a safe bet that SOMEONE on the enemy side knows.
Also, did anyone notice the throwaway line where someone voices being perplexed on how the Galra keep finding them? What if it's Keith tipping them off? Would be kind of interesting considering that he 'found' the blue lion and at roughly the same time the Galra came for it...
