She hasn't. She still was "transformed" by Jhiaxus and alludes to it now and then, I think most recently her alluding to the many years spent repeatedly "killing" Jhiaxus while close enough to the Death Universe portal that he couldn't actually die.
She's basically come to terms with what was done to her and she's no longer a "freak" since there are so many other female Cybertronians. That doesn't mean she still doesn't harbor resentments about her lack of choice in the matter.

When Simon Furman created the IDWverse in 2005 he decided there would be no female robots. Just like the good old days!
Then in 2008 he wrote Spotlight: Arcee, which introduced Arcee as the first and (at the time) only woman transformer. She was the result of a normal robot being turned into a female by a mad scientist. And it drove her insane. Furman was taken off the franchise shortly after that.
So the later writers at IDW were stuck with a canonical absence of females other than Arcee who they didn't want to touch because kek.
In 2012 IDW launched the ongoing More than Meets the Eye and hired James Roberts to write it. Among many other things he wanted to write about robot relationships. So, among a main cast of over a dozen, he included exactly one romantic couple. And since all the robots are boys they are by default gay.
Tailgate is only "transgender" in the sense that his holographic avatar (you know, the thing TFs project to make it look like they aren't driving themselves) is a girl. Which doesn't mean shit.

Just because you don't remember it doesn't mean it didn't happen, and even if it didn't so what? Hasbro doesn't care about being called progressive, they want it now because it's a thing that a lot of people talk about but they couldn't care less about it as long as people buy their crap, it wasn't nearly as relevant in the 90s so they didn't push it. And notice that one of the BW characters was modelled after an actual stripper, while the other was changed to male in Japan. The only reasons Hasbro cares about female transformers are horny nerds and girls who might buy their toys but only if they're made specifically for them, preferably pink, and appearing progressive helps with the 2nd group. In the 80s they thought that introducing fembots would hurt the sales, later when they found out that it's not the case they decided to exploit that to sell to different demographics.
