I don't think he cares about most Marvel characters but I actually do think he cares about Spider-Man.
Spider-Man and Silver Surfer are the two characters he seems to feel a personal connection with. Maybe with Spider-Man it's that Ditko left relatively early and he wound up working harder on the character than he worked on, say, Thor or FF. Those were basically Kirby's characters. Spider-Man he kind of made his own.
