Clarence is never by the numbers, its writing is actually among the most original I've ever seen, especially for a kids show - it always goes somewhere you don't expect. They never just fall back on cliches.

I'd usually agree with you, but in this case I thought it was pretty boring and predictable. "Kid is embarrassed about being in the school play, but then with the support of his friends he goes on-stage and people actually like him instead. His fears were unfounded this whole time." Eh. It's been done.
The only thing they switched up was having Sumo go off-script. That was fun, but the main plot was pretty standard. Regardless, I love Clarence and most episodes do feel fresh and original.
