She looks so damn cartoony, it's jarring. Finding Nemo had that slight touch of realism that made it look awesome. This just looks like a cheaper imitation.

But Kaitlin Olsen is hot and Destiny seems really cute.

They're intelligent tubes with sonic powers and teeth. They can't leave the water but need to breathe air.

I'm not articulating this well but they make me uncomfortable. Maybe BelugAnon concurs.

Good movie though

>Why did there need to be do many flashbacks? There was one every, like, 5 minutes and it was practically the same scene every time

ikr? It really removed me from Dory's state of mind, like the movie itself was coming to a stand still to remind her what she's doing every few minutes and we just had to sit through it.
I mean it slowly built up to a really sweet reveal, but it feels like there must have been a better way to go about it.

Other scenes where people just remember Dory and we have to trust it with no confirming flashback were really great for putting us in her shoes, letting us wonder and allowing us to understand how she can be so go-with-the-flow, because she kind of has to be.
>>
>>83947127
it's great if you loved Dory as a character, the movie is really about her journey

I don't know Pickles, I don't think I really believe in destiny anymore, you know, ever since Adult Swim flushed ours down the toilet.
No offence, Nemo. Hey, tell Dory to tell the whales I said "Hi." And "Sorry for not doing... whatever..." I don't know, I don't speak whale so I was never really clear on what they... Well, no matter what happens, say "Hi."

And Finding Nemo only had a couple of goofy moments but you could say it was still one of their more serious films and they also only had a few plot conveniences. Finding Dory had a fucking octopus driving a truck, A TRUCK while legging it from the cops! It's was a bit too convenient that it was Dory's home that was the first thing they just happen to find when they got off the current, everyone remembered Dory and Dory finding her parents as soon as got back into the sea... Honestly, this film felt more like another Toy Story than anything else. I still liked it though.
>>
>>83951363

Still... I was really expecting to see them explore the ocean or something. The main highlight of Finding Nemo for me was the journey, seeing all the different sea creatures and exploring the ocean. Here they literally reach where they needed to go within minutes and all they needed to do was follow Crush and get attacked by a giant squid.

Off the top of my head:
- deliberately pandery with cute baby dory
- Marlin and Nemo are there as dead weight with no real purpose
- Too terrestrial, not enough ocean. They're in the ocean for like 15 minutes then it's all the park.
- Jokes were easy and repetitive (re: Sigourney Weaver, Destiny not being able to see)
- Idris Elba is there for no reason and has nothing to do.
- Becky is a stupid "character"
- Too many situations when salt water fish are either out of water or in fresh water.
- The entire third act was ridiculously stupid even for a Pixar film. How the fuck does an octopus (or Dory for that matter) know how to drive a truck? How does an octopus have the strength to push the pedals let alone know what they are? Also how did Hank not suffocate and die when he spent the majority of histime out of the water?
- Dory's memory is entirely plot driven and has no consistency

But mostly it just didn't feel as magical or wide in scale as Finding Nemo. Characters weren't as good or well rounded.
>>
>>83957656

It was a bit too 'similar yet different' for me. The premise opened itself up for another ocean exploration story, and Marlin goes on about his own adventure as if they compare, but then the actual film is much more reigned in to a single location.
Like, if they want to keep it in one location that's fine, but it wasn't really set up in a way that allowed it to feel satisfying.
>>
Considering how heavy Finding Nemo was on the whole "stop fucking with wild animals, humans" theme, and kept things relatively realistic to where it could practically be going on in your own fish tank, it seems weird that this movie is set in an aquarium in a post-Blackfish world, is careless about fresh/salt water mixing, water quality, time spent out of water, time spent in fucking tiny containers (how many people are going to think coffee pots are quirky hipster fish tanks after seeing this?), kids manhandling fish, way too many fucking fish in a relatively small aquarium in that open ocean exhibit, poorly designed aquariums where fish can very easily get lost in pipes and jump out of their enclosures, and got knows what else. Sigourney Weaver's voice is the only thing that even gives lip service to their welfare of ocean life.

I'm not all "gr, irresponsible writing" about it (after all, everyone went out and bought a pet Nemo after the first one despite the whole movie being about why that makes you a massive jerk, so it doesn't really seem to make any difference), it just seems like this movie really missed the point of the first one, and a huge part of it's charm (that what we see the fish doing throughout the movie, as well as what we see the humans do to fish throughout the movie, is very comparable to what we see in real life. Instead of octopus driving fucking trucks down the highway).
>>
>>83960251

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I could believe an octopus could be taught the actions required for driving a truck. Those fuckers are smart and have been known to figure out all kinds of shit. I would not expect an octopus to handle driving a truck on its first try, though. It'd take learning the same way it does with everyone else.

Handling the tang risks the chances of being badly cut by the caudal spine. These spines, on both sides of the caudal peduncle, are extended from the body when the fish becomes excited. The quick, thrashing sideways motion of the tail can produce deep wounds that result in swelling and discoloration, posing a risk of infection. It is believed that some species of Acanthurus have venom glands while others do not. The spines are used only as a method of protection against aggressors.[citation needed] Two sharp spines stick out at the caudal peduncle—the area where the tail joins the rest of the body.

>A wild fish would never encounter writing

Well, there is a whole lot of garbage in the ocean, a good amount of it probably with writing. And I don't say that in an environmentalist kind of way, it's just a fact.
>>
Apparently rare for a fish to know how to read, yet every living thing seems to know what and where California is.

Also the sea otters. They are busy doing fuckall and suddenly a whale shark, a beluga and a bunch of fish show up out of nowhere and ask them if they mind standing in traffic. What the fuck?
>>
>>83944146
Apparently Nemo originally looked "too real" and they toned it down to the movie we got, and they seem to have toned it down even further
>>
>>83971005
Yeah, was just about to mention garbage/old ships lying at the bottom of the ocean. The sharks probably saw a lot of writing on their ship. Maybe fish in general don't pay that much attention to human objects or concepts.
>>
>>83971005

Probably less interesting when there are baracudas and shit to worry about, and an entire ocean to explore. Sort of like how that tanked fish in the first movie was obsessed with bubbles, aquarium fish are probably prone to reading their surroundings out of boredom. Plus they're a lot more familiar since those signs aren't going anywhere, while it's easy to swim past garbage without much care.

>>83960251
My big issue was that it just felt like things were happening with no real gravity. The first one felt like such an epic. It had urgency and it was about a desperate father overcoming incredible obstacles for the sake of his son. This one was just a lot of characters trying to find each other as they all kinda got moved around. The biggest danger was being accidentally sent to Cleveland and the majority of the problems in the movie wouldn't have happened if the characters had just stayed put. They never came across anything dangerous besides the squid that came out of nowhere at the beginning and the way they just hopped around tanks and went through pipes without any humans even blinking was just a bit too convenient.

I really liked it but some things about it irked me and the more I think about them the more they annoy me

This movie out of any movie i'd seen I think is the most convenient movie of all time.

Dory constantly gets lucky all the time and they even use that as a crucial plot point (thinking like dory is literally just going into a situation full retard and coming out fine on the other end.) When characters get out of bad situations for free its a major cop out and gives us no insight on their character. Her memory also only works when it's needed for the plot and has no consistency or rules.

Neemo was total brat, marlin should have left him home. All he does is use the power of hindsight to act like a dick to his dad.

The morals were super off Just keep swimming is the worst advice to give to a lost child, and thinking like doring just means go in mindlessly into every situation.

Lastly, did anyone else get a weird romantic vibe from marlin and dory? Felt like they were gonna kiss and it made me very uncomfortable.

I mean I actually enjoyed the movie quite a bit but as far as pixar goes this is probably middle of the pack and had flaws.

>The whale shark is a filter feeder – one of only three known filter feeding shark species (along with the basking shark and the megamouth shark). It feeds on plankton including copepods, krill, fish eggs, Christmas Island red crab larvae and small nektonic life, such as small squid or fish.
>such as small squid or fish.

>Lastly, did anyone else get a weird romantic vibe from marlin and dory? Felt like they were gonna kiss and it made me very uncomfortable.
Yeah, same here. I'm glad they didn't, and I think we can trust that they have no intentions to go there, but even what was there was like "jeez guys, bit much."

I agree with the rest of what you said too. It's such a shame though that they took what was widely thought to be the most important Pixar film since Toy Story, and made such a lukewarm followup. Standing on its own, it's just a fun flick, but judged against it's predecessor it's seriously disappointing and just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth in terms of accusations that Pixar's just following the money these days. The fact that they would go forward with a sequel to fucking Finding Nemo with anything but an absolutely excellent concept really doesn't sit right with me. Especially after all this time - a distance from the original like this usually inspires hope of "wow, they must really have something good to dredge this back up," only to find... no, not really, just a fun little movie.

The Toy Story series might just be the same movie three times in a row, but it's a really good movie three times in a row. Monsters University might just be a bit of fun with a pinch of gutpunch, but so was the first one so who's complaining. But Finding Dory just doesn't cut the mustard at all.

Most importantly, it makes me very nervous about the fact that we're finally getting The Incredibles 2, pretty much the only Pixar film that has been begging for a sequel ever since the original release, while Pixar's for the first time in an era where I'm not sure I trust them to do it justice.
Not to mention Toy Story 4, when #3 was begging to NOT have a sequel.
>>
>>83975950
>Monsters University might just be a bit of fun with a pinch of gutpunch
Oish, that movie.

It gets to me how many people don't understand one of the big lessons in it, and it's a lesson that I haven't seen touched on before.

A ton of movies and stuff focus on how "no matter how hard you try, you will achieve your dreams", but sometimes you're not built for your dreams. Sometimes you're not built to be a bodybuilder, or president, or a scarer. It's the universe saying that you belong somewhere else, and you have to be man enough to understand that some mountains aren't yours to climb.

I wish they toned it down on the pop culture jokes

The Sigourney Weaver shit would be ok if it was just an unnamed announcer that Dory listened to and thought was her friend, but making it Sigourney instantly dates the joke

Also it had way too much focus on humans, should have been like 1 where you didnt focus on them so much like with the dentist

Also why the fuck do fish know about police/jail/freeways/driving , the climax was so out of place

Yeah, no. Took me a moment to even figure out what the fuck Dory was, and that's mostly because of the unique color scheme. The entire front half of her body is so wrong.

Destiny's proportions are much closer to those of an actual whale shark, just with bigger eyes. They are goofy looking mother fuckers.

Sigourney Weaver is a pretty timeless actress and the joke still works fine even if kids don't know her. You don't actually need to know the reference to understand the joke is "Human voice introduces itself by name and characters act like they know her personally." That being said, they kept saying Sigourney Weaver so much that it kinda ran the joke into the ground.

Also I assume that Bailey and Destiny can know about the police and freeways simply by spending their lives in the facility, in the same way the fish at the dentist office had various knowledge of the human world. Climax was still pretty out of place though.
>>
>>83973265
I can stay in the water for several hours and be none the worse for wear, but if you put a whale on land for that long, it would be dead.
>>
>>83989111
Yeah, I remember being a little kid and seeing jokes about all kinds of celebrities without having any idea who they were supposed to be. But I always caught on that they were celebrities of some sort, and that was all I needed to get most of the basic jokes, if not some of the subtleties behind them.

A good example was watching the South Park movie. I don't think a lot of the audience watching that knew who Brian Boitano was, but you get the idea that he's a real celebrity in some circle and that the song is exaggerating his abilities. Learning that he's a figure skater isn't necessary, it just makes it funnier.
>>
>>83989319
The Brian Boitano joke was also a reference to the original south park shorts, when the kids are more impressed that Brian Boitano showed up than Jesus or Santa.
>>
>>83989388
Yeah. And it's a very similar kind of joke there, too. I think I saw that ep as a kid and understood that time they did it well enough also. I know I saw both before I actually looked up who Brian Boitano really is.
>>
>>83981666

>>
>>83992153
Enjoyable enough, but it never really delivers the same sense of heart or danger that the first one did. Despite being enjoyable, it seemed like it was an unnecessary movie made as a cashgrab and it never really convinced me otherwise.

Hank managed to be the best character and most blatant plot device.

>>

Thing is, I never really enjoyed the first one. Even when I watched it when I got older, I got why people liked it, but it never clicked for me.

>>

That's how I feel about Ratatouille

I want to say I'm a bit surprised by the high reviews. The RT score seems a bit high, but then I consider what it actually means and I guess it seems reasonable that over 90% of people could consider this movie to be above a 5/10.

Some thoughts:
- I think I saw Mr. Incredible (actually Bob Parr) walking around the Marine Institute.
- I really wish they put in an Admiral Kirk/Monk Spock walking around it. It was clearly referencing the Monterrey Bay Aquarium (the Cetacean Institute in ST IV)
- I didn't see the Pizza Planet truck.
- It was really refreshing to see a movie, especially a kids' movie, where we're allowed to laugh at retards again. The sea lion and Becky were funny because they were a little slow in the head and funny looking. Thanks for that.
- Please GOD let the Blu-Ray have a "watch the aquarium background" feature like the Nemo disk had.
- HOLY SHIT did this movie look great. Beautiful animation. And notice that the clownfish now actually have scales!
- Those lines of shells made me fucking weep.
-There were some great visual gags (The fish jumping tanks when the truck swerved. I lol'ed.)
- WHY THE FUCK DID THEY HAVE A PICTURE OF DARLA!?
-I loved that the beluga's head was constantly pulsing. And his Daredevil-vision thing was awesome.

It's always been my least favourite Pixar film (never saw Cars. Brave and The Good Dinosaur have probably usurped its position by now though).

The whole premise was just uninteresting, the way Remy controlled the chef by pulling his hair was just fucking retarded, and so was the villain chef's plan to make the rat design fucking frozen dinners, what? I haven't seen it since it came out, and just typing all that shit makes me think "no, that can't be right, I must be remembering wrong."

But the character designs were great, and that moment where the critic is reminded of his mother was fucking fantastic. Everything else was stupid and forgettable.
