Even as I kid I thought it was weird since your're just giving the person you are fighting the chance to counter it.

Well, no. Having the protagonist be good at everything right away is immensely unsatisfying.

I did Judo for a few years as a kid. At one point I realized that I could go for one throw that sweeps the leg but then do a totally different throw from that same setup. It worked for me all of one time, and never again.

It was probably because after the one time, I decided to give it a name, just like my Japanese animes, and I yelled it out loud every time I attempted it. Keep in mind the whole point of the move was that it was supposed to fake you out.

Honestly I'll take this over
>character learns new technique
>its all they ever use until the next upgrade
>finale is just an over stylized variation of the move the learned at the start of it all

Saw it, huge fan.

I don't mean he has to be invincible, I just mean that he starts out reasonably skilled and we don't have to spend 40 minutes waiting for the asskicking. Blood and Bone, Bruce Lee movies, Shaw Brothers movies, and so on all had the heroes start out as skilled warriors and they were great.

That just means you are not strong enough that they can know what you will do and be able to do nothing about it.

Most martial arts teach you to shout/grunt when you throw punches or kicks, and it can throw your opponent off and you breath out when punching/kicking anyway so it's like two birds one stone.

How does anyone here like karate and NOT enjoy all these shitty tropes? Have you ever actually yelled "Hiyah!" or done Bruce Lee impressions while you train with people? Its fun. That crane style pose makes you feel like a badass when you do it.
>>83920933
And training montages are usually my favorite parts of movies.

Heres my problem
>Episode is about karate/kung fu/martial arts
>Serious emphasis on discipline and training
>End result is essentially flight and magic powers.
>No attempt to choreograph an actual fight scene.

I have this problem with most animes and live action martial arts movies too. Its nice when you can pick up an actual move from watching a martial arts film. The Raid had some amazing shit in it. But take all this Crouching Tiger shit and shove it, amirite? If I wanted to see people float I'd drown the people who made those movies.

They're two different styles of action. You don't have to like both, but one's not better than the other and they both can have good fight choreography.

Is there a show where the protagonist, seemingly outmatched, yells out one move but does another to gain the upper hand? Especially if he has always yelled out the moves he was going to do before he did them, preparing for a moment when an enemy is too much to take on.

What? That stuff can be absolutely gorgeous to watch. Realism is not the end-all of martial arts movies.

I like the hyper-brutal Raid action and the technical-oriented Bourne military action, but I also love wuxia movies too. There's no reason to pick.
