Raava = light
Vaatu = darkness
Korra is the light avatar since she got the spirit shit from Raava, so it makes perfect sense that you become a dark avatar by letting Vaatu do the trick.

I actually think this was a good culmination about how worse the avatar universe becomes when you being modern technology into it. Bending as a combat medium becomes less and less relevant.

If you look at every law or policy push by feminism in american in the last 100 years, it becomes pretty damn retarded how much shit was just given to females despite males taking 1000+ years to achieve themselves. If you make a fictional cartoon with a 'stronk womyn' who acts in the manner of a modern day american woman without the context and political correctness of modern day feminism, she'll just come across as a straight spoiled little asshole.
The problem with LOK is that the villains have to somehow make us feel sympathetic to korra, which leads to outlandish and straight bizarre plot devices that just make a 'super bad guy'.
It just doesn't work. ATLA had realistic teenagers being forced to grow up during their adventure, which led to a great sense or realism in a fantasy world. LOK had 'IM DA AVATAR'. Oh and lesbians I guess.

Bending will probably never stop being the prevalent form of combat because Nick and Bryke won't allow guns to be a thing in the setting, shock gloves can only do so much (and I don't think Asami plans on making more anytime soon) and as book 4 showed even when there's a robot that's hundreds of feet tall, a small group of benders can still take it down. If you want to be technical, it only took ONE bender to actually shut it down (Mako with his lightning).

As a /m/ guy this triggers me too It's honestly just a shitty mecha design If they did an Avatar in a more modern day with mechs Kinda like Gasaraki it'd make somewhat sense but the fact metal-benders are a thing makes it not work at all. If they stuck with Pic related it would have been fine.
