This. The old "silent JRPG protagonist" trope is a bit misleading because they only communicate implicitly. Link or Crono or any Dragon Quest hero might never have an actual line of dialog, but in conversations you see that people react to what they "say" all the same, or you get dialog choices, or something like "Adol explained to the love interest of the week why he'd entered the monster temple". It's supposed to be about player immersion.
A lot of western RPGs with detailed character creation still do similar with protags, despite giving you more dialog choices.

Jack didn't fight Aku every episode. Samurai Jack more in the tone of a wandering swordsman righting wrongs and fighting against the agents of a greater evil. Confrontations with Ganondorf would be few and far between and depending on which Ganondorf we're talking about he could be an interesting foil.

I've thought about this a bit. I think instead of adapting the games perfectly, it would be a looser adaptation. Since games have so much content.
I think it should be a different Link each season, and the tone would change with each Link. But, they're all mute, yet very expressive, and can make various grunts. Depending on the tone, they might be more serious, or more silly. I figure every 3rd season could be a Toon Link season.
They'd be attempting to defeat different villains and such sometimes it's Ganon, or maybe Ganondorf, or maybe Vaati, or maybe Demise or someone, and you'd get to see different interpretations of all the notable characters. Like a Toon Malon or a OoT Midna.

I've always wanted to play a video game that were like Morrison's works and kind of analyzed the relationship between the developer and the player, that were very meta and played around with game design concepts, and relied on a player's knowledge of a particular series or notions of game design or various game tropes to deliver some hard-hitting twists, to include the player in its story more, or to analyze the nature of interactive storytelling. I think BotW is going to be the closest thing to that in a video game.
From everything that we've seen, it looks crazy as hell. We've already gotten some interesting fan theories on /v/ and such, like it potentially being set in a convergence of all three Zelda timelines, Link not being your typical Link, it being simultaneously the last Zelda game in the timeline and the first due to some stable time loop shenanigans. I really feel like this is going to be an opportunity by Nintendo to deliver some really weird bullshit that you'll really have to wrap your mind around. And I can't wait, it's going to be great.

It makes more sense for Metroid because Samus is almost always isolated, at least on her adventures. So it would make more sense for a Metroid cartoon to be very much in a similar spirit to SJ.
A LoZ cartoon wouldn't work like that a lot of the time, because there are always people to talk to in Zelda games. There's always usually at least one town, lots of NPCs factor into the story, they send you on sidequests or even quests that matter to the actual plot, and sometimes you can even find NPCs in dungeons. Plus you often have companions that are along with Link for the ride and often stop to talk to him about whatever.
So for LoZ, it could be somewhat similar-ish to SJ, but there's always going to be more supporting characters, more recurring characters too.

To be fair, he was alone more often than not and most of the strangers he met were one-off roles, which is more like Samus' adventures. In almost any given Zelda, there are going to be major supporting roles and you'll interact with them multiple times throughout the game.
A Zelda show would probably have similar characters, so there'd be periods of isolation but also lots of instances where you'd have Link and other characters interacting with lots of dialogue.

It's been literally years since Ganon/Ganondorf has been the main villain in a mainline Zelda game and even in TP, he only hijacked the story at the last minute really. For most of the game, Zant is the main bad guy and G-Dorf doesn't even get that much screen time.
With that in mind, it's literally been over 10 years since Ganondorf was the main baddie throughout the entire game. Nintendo is actually much better about it than DC.

i think the best way to have that kinda feel is to have some kind of narrator. he could "speak" for Link and maybe add a bit of humor. though he either have to sound like a grandpa or be the most gravelly voice motherfucker they can fine.
